Equipment is a tool, not a program. Select it only after identifying the movement goal, the client's current skill, available range, body dimensions, symptoms, access needs, and the environment in which the task will occur.

Selection by Goal and Constraint

Machines can provide a guided path and simple load changes, while free weights allow more degrees of freedom and may demand greater stabilization. Cables maintain adjustable lines of pull. Bands increase tension as they stretch and can recoil if their anchor fails. Suspension devices use body angle and contact position to change demand. None is universally safest or best.

A selectorized leg press may let a novice train the lower body without balancing a bar, but the seat must accommodate hip and knee motion. A dumbbell may allow an individually comfortable wrist path, yet the client must be able to control and set down the load. Choose the option that meets the goal with the fewest unmanaged hazards.

Pre-Use Inspection

Walk the area before the client begins. Check that the floor is dry and unobstructed, plates and dumbbells are stored, and the device is stable. Inspect cables for fraying, pins for complete engagement, belts and decks for damage, upholstery for exposed edges, handles and fasteners for security, and power cords for hazards.

For bands, inspect the entire length and attachment point; never aim a stretched band toward the face. For suspension equipment, verify an approved anchor and enough clearance. Accessibility and Shared Spaces

In a shared gym, communicate when a rack, lane, or platform is in use and keep spotting zones clear. Unload equipment to a condition the next person can approach safely. Store heavier plates where users can retrieve them without unstable reaching when facility design allows.

Record recurring defects rather than repeatedly resetting a device. If a selector pin backs out twice, the absence of a visible break does not make continued use reasonable. Pattern recognition in the maintenance log is part of prevention.

Technology and Feedback Devices

Heart-rate monitors, power meters, GPS devices, velocity trackers, and phone applications can provide useful trends, but they inherit sensor error and algorithm assumptions. Verify that a value is plausible, compare it with RPE and symptoms, and do not allow screen attention to compromise technique or surroundings.

Decide who can access client data, how it is stored, and whether sharing is necessary.
