The NCCER Boilermaker Assessments: Format, Content Domains, Scoring & Credentials

Core Trade Concept: NCCER does not administer one generic "boilermaker test." It runs the National Craft Assessment and Certification Program (NCACP), which pairs a written knowledge assessment with an optional hands-on Performance Verification. Every question on every boilermaker knowledge assessment is written back to a specific numbered module of NCCER's 2nd edition Boilermaking curriculum. If you know which modules feed which content domain, you know exactly what the test can ask.

1. The Three Boilermaker Knowledge Assessments

NCCER publishes a separate specification sheet for each boilermaker credential. All three were updated November 2024 and all three reference the 2nd edition Boilermaking curriculum.

Three rules follow directly from that table and are commonly missed:

1. The passing standard is a score of 75, not 70. Candidates who plan around a 70% cut score are planning around the wrong number.
2. The Exchanger credential is not standalone. NCCER states that to receive a credential in Industrial Boilermaker – Exchanger, a candidate must complete and pass BOTH the Industrial Boilermaker – Maintenance assessment and the Industrial Boilermaker – Exchanger assessment. The 25-item Exchanger test is an add-on, not a full craft exam.
3. A Journey Level Assessment is also offered for the craft, separate from the three specialty assessments above.

Unless a contractor or owner specifies otherwise, Boilermaker – Pressure Vessel (BLMK34_02) is the default journey-level boilermaker credential and is the blueprint this study guide is built to.

2. Boilermaker – Pressure Vessel: The Full Content Domain Table

NCCER publishes the exact item count per content domain. This is the single most valuable page in your prep, because it tells you where the questions actually live.

What the weighting actually means for your study time

• Boiler Components plus Pipe Fabrication is 34 of 93 items — over a third of the test. A candidate who is strong on boilers but has never fabricated a socket weld or butt weld spool is leaving the largest single block of points on the table.
• Math is only 4 items, but those 4 items are pure arithmetic and trigonometry you either can or cannot do under time pressure. They are the cheapest points on the exam.
• Rigging is 5 items and Tube Work is 5 items. Both are heavily emphasized in boilermaker folklore and both are small on the actual specification. Do not over-rotate.

Two of these deserve emphasis:

• The Pipefitters Blue Book is the only approved reference, and it is approved on the Pressure Vessel assessment specifically. The Blue Book carries fitting takeouts, offset constants, and pipe dimensional data. A candidate who has never opened it before test day will burn far more than 77 seconds trying to find a takeout table. Practice with it.
• "Basic function, non-printing" rules out programmable and graphing calculators. Practice your offset and wall-reduction arithmetic on the calculator you will actually be handed.

4. The Curriculum Behind the Questions

NCCER's Boilermaking curriculum is 2nd edition, 700 recommended hours including Core, organized in four levels. Every assessment item traces back to one of these modules.

Notice that the Pressure Vessel domain table pulls modules from all four levels, including Level 4 modules such as 34401 (Math), 34402 (Construction Drawings), 34407 (Quality Assurance) and 34410 (Advanced Rigging). Passing is not a matter of finishing Level 1 and Level 2.

5. Performance Verification, Credentials & the Score Report

• Performance Verification. A corresponding hands-on Performance Verification exists for each of the three boilermaker assessments. It is evaluated by a qualified evaluator against NCCER performance criteria and is a separate event from the written test. Some employers require both.
• Credentialing. On successful completion of either the knowledge assessment or the performance verification, the credential can be viewed and printed by the individual, or by the assessment program, through the NCCER Account (the national registry). This portability — the ability of any employer to verify your credential nationally — is the practical value of the card.
• Score report and training prescription. Every candidate receives online access to their overall score and a recommended-training prescription through their NCCER Account. If you fail, the prescription names the specific modules to re-study; it is the most efficient retake plan available to you.

6. Realistic Trade Scenario: Building a Two-Week Study Plan From the Specification

A boilermaker with eight years of maintenance experience is scheduled for BLMK34_02 in fourteen days. She has strong boiler and rigging experience but has spent little time in a fab shop.

Working from the specification table, she allocates study hours in proportion to item counts, then adjusts for personal weakness:

She spends the final two sessions doing timed 93-item runs at 77 seconds per item with a basic calculator and the Blue Book open, because pace — not knowledge — is what fails experienced hands on this assessment.
