The veterinary assistant is a vital member of the veterinary healthcare team, working alongside veterinarians and credentialed veterinary technicians to provide high-quality animal care. As the veterinary medical field has advanced, the demand for standardized training and professional recognition has grown. To address this need, the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) established the Approved Veterinary Assistant (AVA) designation. This credential provides a national standard of excellence, validating that an assistant has the knowledge, skills, and professional competency required to excel in a clinical setting.

The NAVTA AVA examination is administered online through the VetMedTeam portal, a specialized veterinary education platform that partners with NAVTA to host, manage, and verify the credentialing process. Earning the AVA designation demonstrates a commitment to the profession and ensures that the assistant is equipped with the core competencies defined by NAVTA's Vet Assistant Committee.

Exam Specifications and Logistics

Understanding the parameters of the examination is the first step toward successful preparation. The AVA exam is a rigorous, timed assessment designed to evaluate a candidate’s comprehension of veterinary assisting principles.

The exam is conducted in a closed-book format. Candidates are not permitted to use any external resources, including textbooks, veterinary drug handbooks, clinical manuals, class notes, mobile phones, or internet-connected devices. The 150-minute time limit is continuous; once the exam begins, the timer cannot be paused or stopped for any reason. This allows candidates an average of 1.5 minutes per question, requiring efficient pacing and confident recall of the material.

Eligibility Pathways and the Validation Code

To maintain the high standards of the AVA designation, NAVTA does not permit candidates to sit for the exam based on work experience alone. All candidates must complete a formal, NAVTA-approved training program. There are three primary pathways through which an individual can complete this education:

1. High School / Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs: These are secondary education programs designed for high school juniors and seniors. They integrate foundational veterinary assisting concepts with introductory clinical training, allowing students to graduate with the knowledge needed to enter the workforce immediately.
2. Post-Secondary Programs: Offered by community colleges, technical schools, and veterinary technology programs, these in-person courses provide intense, structured classroom instruction combined with hands-on clinical lab sessions.
3. Distance and Online Education Programs: Designed for remote learners or active veterinary assistants looking to formalize their education, these programs deliver lectures online. They require students to secure a local veterinary practice to serve as their clinical site, where they complete at least 100 hours of clinical externship/experience under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian or credentialed veterinary technician.

Regardless of the pathway chosen, upon successful graduation from the program, the program director will issue the graduate a unique, one-time-use validation code. This code serves as official verification of graduation and must be entered when enrolling in the AVA exam on VetMedTeam. Candidates must take their first attempt at the examination within 12 months of their graduation date; failure to do so may require additional coursework or validation from the program director to restore eligibility.

Mentor and Proctor Requirements

To ensure the integrity of the AVA credential, NAVTA enforces strict proctoring standards. The exam must be taken in a physical, in-person proctored environment; remote online proctoring services (such as automated webcam monitoring) are not accepted.

Candidates must arrange for a qualified Exam Mentor to proctor their test. The exam mentor must meet one of the following criteria:

• A State-Licensed Veterinarian (DVM or VMD): The veterinarian must hold an active, unencumbered license to practice veterinary medicine.
• A State-Credentialed Veterinary Technician: This includes Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT), Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT), or Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT) who hold active credentials.
• An Authorized Testing Center: Candidates may use the testing center of a college, university, or a licensed commercial testing facility.

The proctor cannot be a relative, spouse, or close personal friend of the candidate. Before the exam can be scheduled, the selected proctor must register on VetMedTeam as an Exam Mentor. Once approved, the proctor will receive administrative credentials and instructions.

On the day of the exam, the proctor must:

1. Verify the candidate's identity using a valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver's license or passport).
2. Ensure the testing area is free of unauthorized materials, including notes, books, phones, and secondary monitors.
3. Log into the VetMedTeam portal using their proctor credentials to unlock the exam interface for the candidate.
4. Remain in the room and maintain direct visual supervision of the candidate for the entire duration of the test.
5. Confirm that the candidate does not navigate away from the testing browser window or talk during the exam.

Any violation of these rules can result in the immediate invalidation of the exam attempt and potential disciplinary action by NAVTA.

Attempt and Retake Policies

Candidates who do not pass the examination on their first attempt are permitted to retake it, subject to NAVTA’s retake policies. Earning the AVA credential allows a maximum of 5 attempts to pass the exam.

• Retake Fees: Each subsequent attempt requires a new registration and payment of the standard $100.00 USD exam fee.
• Registration Timeframe: Once enrolled, candidates have 30 days to complete that specific attempt. If the 30-day window expires before the candidate takes the test, it counts as an attempt, and the fee is forfeited.
• Exhausting Attempts: If a candidate fails the exam 5 times, they are no longer eligible to sit for the test under their original validation code. To regain eligibility, the candidate must re-enroll in and successfully complete a NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant training program to obtain a new validation code. This policy underscores the importance of structured, dedicated study prior to each attempt.
