1. Scope - Who Is Covered (609.1)

2. Redundant Water Service for Hospitals (609.2 and 609.2.1)
609.2 Water service for Group I-2, Condition 2 facilities. A Condition 2 facility shall have not fewer than two water service pipes, sized so that with the loss of the largest service pipe, the remaining service pipes will meet the water demand for the entire facility. Each water service shall have a shutoff valve in the building and a shutoff valve at the utility-provided point of connection to the water main or other source of potable water.
Read the sizing rule carefully. It is not "two services each sized for half the load," and it is not "two services each sized for the full load." It is an N-1 redundancy rule: remove the biggest pipe and whatever is left must still carry the whole building.
Worked example. A hospital has a calculated peak demand of 900 gpm. If it is served by two equal services, losing one leaves a single service that must still deliver 900 gpm - so each service must be sized for the full 900 gpm. If it is served by three services of 450, 450 and 300 gpm, losing a 450 gpm service leaves 450 + 300 = 750 gpm, which fails. Three services of 450, 450 and 450 gpm would leave 900 gpm after the loss and pass.
609.2.1 Tracer wire for nonmetallic piping. Where a hospital water service is underground nonmetallic pipe, an insulated tracer wire listed for the purpose (or other approved conductor) shall be installed adjacent to the piping. Either access shall be provided to the tracer wire, or the wire shall terminate above ground at each end of the nonmetallic piping. The wire shall be not less than 18 AWG and its insulation type shall be suitable for direct burial.
3. Hot Water and Vacuum Breakers (609.3 and 609.4)
609.3 Hot water. Hot water shall be provided to all hospital fixtures, kitchen and laundry requirements. Special fixtures and equipment shall have hot water supplied at a temperature specified by the manufacturer, and the hot water system shall be installed in accordance with Section 607. The code defers to the equipment manufacturer here rather than fixing a number - a sterilizer or a cart washer may require far hotter water than the 110 degrees F that satisfies a patient lavatory.

The two rules coexist. A vacuum breaker on a bedpan washer hose must clear both - 6 inches above the flood level rim and 6 feet above the floor, which in practice means the 6-foot rule governs.
