Single-use in an esthetics room: cotton pads, cotton rounds and balls, gauze, tissues, paper towels, wooden spatulas and applicators, mascara wands and disposable brushes, sponges, cotton-tipped applicators, lash micro-brushes, wax strips, roll-on wax cartridge heads, paper drapes and headbands, gloves, dermaplane and lancet-style blades, nail files and buffers, orangewood sticks, pumice.

Exam Note: The material decides the category, not the price or the intention. An expensive natural-bristle brush is porous — Michigan requires natural fibre, facial and makeup brushes to be fully immersed in a wet sanitizer for at least 10 minutes (R 338.2171a(11)); if a brush cannot survive that, it cannot be multi-use. And under R 338.2179g(1)(f) powder puffs, makeup brushes and cosmetic pencils may not be used on more than one patron unless properly processed.


2. Chain of Contamination

An item is either clean or contaminated — there is no intermediate state, and "it only touched the towel for a second" is not a defence.

An implement becomes contaminated the moment it touches:

  • a client's skin, hair, mucous membrane or body fluid;
  • your ungloved hand after that hand has touched a client or a contaminated surface;
  • an uncleaned work surface, the floor, a pocket, or the inside of your kit after use;
  • an in-use product container, once the applicator has touched skin (this is double dipping).

Once contaminated, a multi-use item goes into the used container and is reprocessed before it is used again. A single-use item goes in the bin. There is no third option.

Exam Note: PSI removes the most common escape hatch explicitly: "All product containers used in the National practical test are considered 'Multi-use' containers, no 'single-use' containers are recognized." You cannot avoid a double-dipping finding by claiming the jar was going to be thrown away.


3. Products Used for Cleaning and Disinfecting

PSI adds a label requirement for the practical: "Disinfectants used must have virucidal, bactericidal and fungicidal properties listed on the manufacturers label." Those three words are the practical shorthand for hospital-grade efficacy.

Cleaning is not disinfection. Cleaning removes visible debris, soil and organic matter mechanically — soap, water and friction. It is always step one, because organic soil physically shields microorganisms and inactivates many disinfectants. Michigan writes it into every protocol as "remove all visible debris" before anything else.


4. The Daily Workstation Cycle

Start of day

  • Disinfect all work surfaces, the treatment bed, the trolley, the stool and the magnifying lamp.
  • Set out clean linens; confirm covered clean-tool containers are stocked.
  • Fill the wet sanitizer with correctly diluted, EPA-registered disinfectant; confirm the container is covered.
  • Fill the steamer with distilled water; load and switch on the towel cabinet.
  • Line the covered waste container; confirm the used-linen container is covered and empty.
  • Wash hands and apply antiseptic.

Between clients

  • Remove and bag all used linens into the covered used-linen container.
  • Discard every single-use item into the covered waste container.
  • Move used multi-use implements to the used container for reprocessing — never back into clean storage.

  1. Is the extractor still clean? No. It was in use on the client, so it was already contaminated; and it has now been placed on a non-designated surface and handled after she touched a personal device. It cannot go back to the client's face and it certainly cannot go back to clean storage.
  2. What about her gloves? Contaminated by the phone. They are changed, and hands are washed and antiseptic reapplied before continuing.
  3. The trolley top. The paper towel is discarded and the surface is decontaminated — debris removed, all surfaces scrubbed with a disinfectant wipe or spray and a clean towel.
  4. The correct move. A second, clean extractor from the covered clean-tool container. Working with a small duplicate set means one contamination event does not end the service.
