Exam Alert: Hairstyling is 5% of the test - about 4 scored items - but PSI enumerates this material in unusual detail: procedures for textured hairstyling broken into hair extension application, maintenance and removal, locking and braiding, followed by procedures for hair additions, replacements and enhancements with hair piece application, maintenance and removal. Four scored items across that much ground means the questions will be about safety, tension and removal, not about artistry.

The Massachusetts Braiding Exemption

Massachusetts draws a line here that many states do not, and it is worth knowing precisely.

M.G.L. c. 112, § 87V ends with: "Natural hair braiding shall be exempt from the rules and regulations issued by the board." A person who only braids natural hair - no cutting, no chemicals, no shaving - is outside the Board's regulatory reach and needs no barber or cosmetology licence in the Commonwealth.

That exemption is narrow, and a licensed barber cannot shelter under it:

  • Braiding plus a haircut, an outline, a shave, a colour service or a chemical texture service is barbering as defined in M.G.L. c. 112, § 87T, and every rule in 240 CMR 8.00 applies to the whole service.
  • The shop is still a licensed barber shop, so 240 CMR 8.02 governs the premises, the sanitation, the linens and the implements regardless of which service is being performed.
  • Every comb, clip, hook and pair of shears used in a braiding service is an implement that contacts a patron, so 240 CMR 8.02(7)(a) still requires cleaning and disinfection before each patron.

Tension: The Risk That Runs Through Everything

Every service in this section adds weight and tension at the follicle, and every one of them can cause traction alopecia - progressive hair loss along the hairline, temples and part lines caused by sustained mechanical pull. It begins as thinning and a receding perimeter with short broken "fringe" hairs; if traction continues long enough the follicle scars and the loss becomes permanent.

Warning signs to check at every appointment and to teach the client:

  • Tenderness, headache or a "tight" sensation after installation - pain is never normal
  • Small pustules or bumps at the base of braids or at link sites in the days after installation
  • Redness or shine along the hairline
  • Short broken hairs at the perimeter, or a hairline that has moved back since the last visit

The rule: if the client reports pain, or if the scalp is visibly lifted or dimpled around the base, the installation is too tight and must be released - not endured until it "settles."

Additional protective standards: keep the perimeter and nape looser than the interior, avoid installing over an already-thinned hairline, give the scalp rest periods between installations, and never install on hair that is chemically compromised from a recent relaxer, perm or heavy lightening.

Sectioning matters as much as technique. Clean, even partings distribute weight; ragged or over-large sections concentrate it. Added hair should be no heavier than the natural section can carry, and should be attached a short distance from the scalp rather than tied directly at the follicle.

Locking

A lock (loc) is hair permanently matted and intertwined into a single unit. Locking is a progression, not a single service, and the phases are commonly examined:

Methods: comb technique (a fine comb rotated to coil the section), palm rolling (the section rolled between the palms), and interlocking (the tail of the lock drawn back through the base with a tool). Interlocking holds longer and is popular for fine hair, but repeated interlocking at the same point creates a weak spot in the shaft.

Maintenance cautions: over-frequent retwisting and retwisting that is too tight are the leading causes of thinning locs and traction loss at the root. Heavy waxes and petrolatum-based "locking gels" trap dirt inside the lock, do not rinse out, and cause build-up and odour. Locks must be dried thoroughly - a lock that stays damp internally can develop mildew and an irreversible smell.

Non-negotiables regardless of method:

  • Consult and assess first. Fine, chemically overprocessed or already-thinning hair cannot carry weight. Check density and tensile strength at the sections that would bear the load.
  • Never install over an active scalp condition. 240 CMR 8.02(9) forbids treating any skin disease, and an occlusive installation over an inflamed scalp makes it worse.
  • Predisposition-test adhesives and solvents. They are potent sensitizers; the 24-to-48-hour test used for aniline colour applies in principle here too.
  • Ventilate. Bond removers and adhesive solvents are volatile organic compounds - see Section 2.3.
  • Plan the removal at the moment of installation. Book the take-down date. Extensions left in far past their intended life mat at the base, and the resulting removal costs the client far more hair than the service ever added.
  • Removal is chemical and patient, never mechanical and fast. Every documented case of extension-related hair loss on removal comes from pulling.

Attachment: double-sided tape (easiest to reverse, needs regular re-taping), liquid adhesive (longest hold, highest sensitizer risk), clips or combs (no adhesive, but concentrated tension at each clip), and weaving or integration into the client's own hair.

Application, maintenance and removal:

  1. Prepare the scalp: clean, dry, free of oil and residue, and intact. Never apply adhesive over abraded, sunburned or inflamed skin.
  2. Template and cut-in: the unit is fitted, then the hair is cut in and blended to the client's own hair - this is where a barber's shear and clipper work carries the service.
  3. Maintain on a schedule: re-tape or re-bond at the manufacturer's interval; cleanse both the unit and the scalp beneath it. Skin under a poly base is occluded and needs deliberate cleansing.
  4. Remove with the matched solvent, allowing full dwell time, easing rather than peeling from the perimeter inward. Peeling a bonded poly base off dry takes the client's own hairline with it.
  5. Store the unit on a block, cleaned and dry, never damp and never crushed.
