Current LSBC Practical Logistics, Supplies & Setup

The Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology publishes a state-specific Manicurist Practical Information bulletin. The version reviewed for this guide is marked created/revised January 28, 2026. It controls the practical tasks and logistics; a generic NIC practical outline or an older school checklist is not a substitute.

Arrival and admission

The bulletin directs candidates to arrive at 8:30 a.m. and states that no one will be admitted after 9:00 a.m. Bring the registration letter and two unexpired forms of identification from the accepted list. The bulletin lists a state driver’s license, LA Wallet, Social Security card, and passport. Because identification policies can change and some combinations may be affected by the candidate notice, check the current bulletin and registration letter before exam day.

Follow the stated dress code. Electronic devices are not permitted, and candidates may not talk during the examination. Organize transportation and supplies so that a late arrival or missing identification does not prevent admission.

Two phases and total working time

The practical consists of:

1. Phase I — Advanced Nail Techniques: 45 minutes. The candidate performs a nail tip with acrylic overlay, a sculptured nail using a form, and a nail repair using a silk wrap.
2. Phase II — Manicure: 30 minutes. The candidate shapes the nails, applies base coat, red polish, and top coat, and performs a hand-and-arm massage as directed.

That is 75 minutes of listed task time. The current bulletin does not divide Phase I into official fifteen- or twenty-minute sub-blocks, and it does not list a separate blood-exposure demonstration. Do not build practice timing around tasks that are absent from the bulletin.

Mannequin preparation

Before arrival, glue nails to the mannequin hand or fingers. The attached nail must extend from the cuticle area past the free edge so there is a surface on which to perform the required work. Prepare the model exactly as directed; do not arrive expecting to create the base setup during test time.

Published supply list

The bulletin lists fabric wrap, powder, an acrylic brush, nail tips, a nail form, cotton, a finger bowl, a sanitizing container with antiseptic, nail file, liquid monomer, nipper, orangewood stick, cuticle oil or cream, lotion, cuticle pusher, mannequin hand or fingers, clear and red polish, buffer, primer, nail cleaner, nail glue, towels, and polish remover. Odorless products only are allowed for the applicable enhancement system.

Pack items to prevent leakage and contamination. Keep original product labels and follow transportation and venue rules. Separate clean supplies from waste. The bulletin’s “sanitizing container with antiseptic” wording is an exam supply instruction; in salon work, process implements according to Louisiana rules and the relevant product label.

Setup strategy

Arrange the kit so each phase can be performed without searching, but wait for examiner instructions before beginning. Check that liquids are secure, polishes open correctly, the form fits, the silk is usable, the tip sizes are available, and the mannequin preparation remains intact. Bring backup consumables when permitted, but do not let extra items create clutter.

The safest final check is source-based: compare the kit item by item with the current LSBC PDF and the candidate registration letter. If either document changes, follow the newer official instruction rather than this summary.

Night-before audit

Lay out every bulletin item and check it off without relying on memory. Confirm that the two IDs are unexpired, the registration letter is packed, liquids are sealed, red and clear polish open, the silk and form are usable, and the mannequin nails meet the advance-preparation direction. Plan to arrive early enough for parking and admission. Remove electronic devices from the exam kit as directed. A personal practice checklist may include sanitation and waste supplies, but it should not invent a blood-exposure station or substitute items for the Board’s published list. Recheck the LSBC page shortly before the appointment for revisions.

Bulletin versus personal routine

Candidates often practice a full salon setup that contains more items than the public bulletin lists. Extra organization can help, but no personal item should violate venue rules, leak, create odor, or obscure the required supplies. Label private rehearsal times as practice goals rather than examiner allocations. At the administration, listen for phase-specific instructions, use only the appropriate supplies, and stop when directed. If the registration letter conflicts with an older class handout, treat the official candidate communication as the issue to resolve with LSBC before arrival.
