Blind Rams, Shear Rams, and Casing Shear Rams

Key Takeaways

  • Shear and sealing qualifications are separate and object-specific.

  • Use actual tubular, position, tension and closing-pressure capability data.

  • Simple hydraulic force explains units but cannot replace shear qualification.

  • Verify both cutting and containment; non-sealing rams need a separate seal.

Cutting and sealing are distinct capabilities

Blind rams close on an empty bore. Blind/shear rams combine a qualified cutting function with a qualified sealing function after the cut. Casing-shear equipment may be designed to cut larger tubulars without providing a pressure seal, requiring another sealing element in the emergency sequence. The actual model determines its capabilities. A name such as “shear ram” is not proof that it cuts and seals every object that can pass through the bore.

Qualification depends on tubular diameter, wall thickness, weight, grade, metallurgy, position, tension and the available hydraulic force against the expected well pressure. A tool joint, heavy-wall section, casing, cable or running tool can be outside the qualified capability. Modern equipment may qualify some objects that older equipment could not, so a universal statement that no shear ram can cut a tool joint is also incorrect. Read the current shear data and assembly list.

Force must overcome the actual resistance

Hydraulic force depends on effective piston area and available differential pressure, with well pressure and mechanism losses also considered. A simplified training actuator with effective area 100 square inches and net hydraulic pressure 3,000 psi develops 300,000 pounds of theoretical force. That calculation explains the units, but it does not qualify a tubular for shearing. Actual blade geometry, deformation, material properties and dynamic losses require the manufacturer's tested or approved data.

Multiplying pipe cross-sectional area by an assumed fraction of yield strength is not a reliable substitute for qualification. Shearing involves bending, flattening and blade engagement, not merely uniform pure shear. Boost or tandem arrangements also vary by design. The driller checks the required closing pressure and available system pressure instead of assuming a booster always doubles force.

Prepare the shearable position

The space-out instruction identifies a qualified pipe body at the shear ram and the position of neighbouring joints and non-shearable items. On a floating rig, account for tide, draft and motion reference. Post and maintain that reference as the string changes. An emergency sequence cannot compensate for an object that the installed equipment is not qualified to cut or seal.

Before placing non-shearables across the stack, identify them, perform the required flow check and establish an assured closure method. That may involve a different operating position, barrier or approved procedure. The applicable risk and Management of Change process addresses any altered emergency capability. Do not leave the crew to discover the limitation after the first ram fails.

The approved operating sequence

The Level 3 syllabus describes spacing out, centralising with an appropriate ram below the shear ram, hanging off and reducing tension for the subsea arrangement, providing the required closing supply through the bypass where applicable, operating the shear rams, verifying the cut and verifying well closure. These duties are implemented through the installed system's procedure. They are not permission to apply maximum supply pressure to every hydraulic circuit.

The lower ram and joint must be qualified for the load, and the bypass route must deliver a pressure the selected equipment can accept. A drill floor team coordinates string position, load and control operation. Emergency systems may automate parts of the sequence, but their programmed functions and prerequisites must be known. Do not assume every EDS or deadman command performs the same order.

Confirm the outcome

Hydraulic-volume and pressure response, ram position feedback and string-load observations can indicate movement or cutting. They must be combined with pressure and flow evidence that the well is sealed. A cut without a seal leaves an uncontrolled path. If closure is incomplete, operate the designated alternative or emergency system and communicate the limitation immediately.

A non-sealing casing-shear ram cannot be credited as the final pressure barrier just because it completed a cut. The sequence may use a separate blind/shear or blind sealing element after the object is cleared. Identify which ram contains the well and how that seal is verified. The lower stack must remain secured during an LMRP disconnect; the wellhead connector is a different connection.

Apply supplied data to an exercise

Suppose a training capability table approves a 5 inch pipe body of a stated grade at 2,800 psi closing pressure, excludes its tool joint and lists a separate casing-shear function as non-sealing. The appropriate pipe-body position and at least the required qualified closing supply are necessary for the first function. If casing must be cut, the non-sealing function alone is insufficient for containment. The answer comes from the supplied qualification, not from assuming the largest-looking blade has the greatest useful pressure-control capability.

The operator records the object, position, load, pressure source and observed result. These details give the supervisor evidence of the achieved barrier and any remaining limitation. Shear equipment is a vital emergency resource, and its value depends on preparation and verification before and after operation.
