  • The theory paper uses one-mark multiple-choice questions with no negative marking, lasts 2 hours, is answered on OMR sheets and is bilingual in English and Hindi.

  • Candidates must score 70% in theory (42/60) and in practical (98/140) separately; up to 5% grace marks may be given in either part.

  • The practical splits into demonstration skills 80, teaching skills 40, application of knowledge 10 and field experience 10 marks.

  • A YPI certificate is valid for 5 years from the result date and is renewed through YCB's Continuing Yoga Education Programme.

What the YCB Level 1 Certificate Is

The Yoga Protocol Instructor (YPI) certificate is Level 1 of the voluntary Scheme for Certification of Yoga Professionals run by the Yoga Certification Board (YCB), which the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, set up in March 2018. YCB issues the certificate; the theory and practical examinations are conducted on its behalf by approved Personnel Certification Bodies (PrCBs) and, for their own students, by YCB-accredited Yoga institutions.

According to the official YPI syllabus (Version 0.2), a certified YPI can teach the basics of Yoga and the Common Yoga Protocol developed by the Ministry for the International Day of Yoga, "for prevention of diseases and promotion of health", and can conduct classes in parks, housing societies and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs). That role description explains why this guide spends so much time on the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP).

Note

Levels are not sequential. YCB's FAQ states that a candidate can apply directly for any level after self-assessment, so Level 1 is not a prerequisite for Level 2 (Yoga Wellness Instructor) or Level 3 (Yoga Teacher & Evaluator).

How the Assessment Is Marked

The YPI assessment carries 200 marks: a theory paper of 60 marks and a practical/skill test of 140 marks.

Theory paper rules

  • Multiple-choice questions carry 1 mark each, so the 60-mark paper has 60 questions, and there is no negative marking.
  • The paper lasts 2 hours, and answers are marked on an OMR sheet.
  • It is bilingual (English and Hindi); for other languages it is set in English plus that language, and the English wording prevails if a translation error appears.
  • Questions are divided equally across the units and sub-units of the syllabus, so every sub-topic in Units 1–3 can be examined.

Practical / skill test

  • Each candidate is assessed for not more than one hour.
  • Demonstration covers prayer, cleansing techniques, Sukshma and Sthula Vyayama, Surya Namaskara, the listed asanas, breathing practices, pranayama, bandhas, mudras and practices leading to meditation (Chapters 3, 7 and 8 of this guide).
  • Teaching skills cover lesson planning, teaching different groups and class management (Chapter 10).
  • For field experience, candidates show a report with photographs of a training programme they conducted, together with feedback forms and experience details in YCB's prescribed formats.

Passing, Re-Appearing and Re-Checking

  1. You must score 70% in theory and 70% in practical separately: at least 42/60 and 98/140. A maximum of 5% grace marks may be given in either theory or practical, and decimal marks are rounded up.
  2. Absence from either part counts as a fail.
  3. If you pass the practical but fail theory, you can re-appear in theory only once within 3 months of the result by paying the theory fee.
  4. If you pass theory but fail the practical, you are treated as failed and must apply again as a fresh candidate, paying the full assessment fee (but not a new enrolment fee). Your YCB enrolment number is valid for life.
  5. Theory re-checking (OMR) can be requested within 15 days of the result and covers only the calculation of marks. The scheme lists ₹1,000 for re-checking in the candidate's absence and ₹3,000 in the presence of the candidate and examiner.

Fees, Enrolment and Scheduling

  • Stage 1: enrol on the YCB website. The enrolment fee is a one-time, non-refundable fee for that certificate.
  • Stage 2: choose the PrCB or accredited institution, city and exam date, and pay the assessment (exam) fee to that body. Institutions may conduct exams offline or online, and exams are generally held on weekends.
  • Enrolment fee: YCB's February 2024 brochure lists ₹500 for YPI (US$10 for SAARC, US$25 for developing and US$50 for developed countries) and says the figure was "valid till 30 September 2024"; the 2020 scheme document lists ₹1,000. Confirm the current amount on the YCB portal before paying.
  • Exam fee: set by the conducting PrCB or institution, so it varies (the 2020 scheme recommended ₹1,000). It is not refunded once the admit card has been issued.

Certificate Validity and Renewal

YCB issues a certificate and ID card bearing a unique number and a security QR code. The YPI certificate is valid for 5 years from the declaration of the result (effective 27 February 2020). Before it expires, the holder must take part in the Continuing Yoga Education Programme (CYEP); YCB's January 2026 circular extending YPI validities says professionals must apply for renewal on the YCB portal.

How to Use This Guide

Unit 1 maps to Chapters 1–3, Unit 2 to Chapters 4–5, and Unit 3 to Chapters 6 and 9 (with first aid in Chapter 10). The practical syllabus is covered in Chapters 3, 7, 8 and 10. Because theory questions are spread evenly across sub-units, do not skip any sub-topic.

Test Your Knowledge

A candidate scores 52/60 in theory and 88/140 in the practical. What is the result under YCB's passing rule?

A

Pass, because the combined score of 140/200 is exactly 70 percent overall

B

Pass, because only the theory paper must reach 70 percent and the practical is graded by impression

C

Fail, because the practical needs 98/140 on its own and 88 falls short even with the maximum grace

D

Fail, because the theory cut-off is 54/60 and both parts must also total at least 150/200

Test Your Knowledge

Under YCB rules, what happens if a candidate passes the practical test but fails the theory paper?

A

They may re-appear in the theory paper once within 3 months of the result by paying the theory fee

B

They must repeat both parts as a fresh candidate and pay a new enrolment fee for the certificate

C

They receive a provisional certificate and must pass the theory paper at the time of renewal

D

They may attempt the theory paper as many times as they like within one year without a fee

Test Your Knowledge

Which statement about the YPI theory paper is correct?

A

It is a 90-minute paper of 100 questions with a quarter mark deducted for each wrong answer

B

It is an essay-type paper marked by the examiner and offered only in the English language

C

It is a 60-minute online test whose questions are drawn only from the first unit of the syllabus

D

It is a 2-hour MCQ paper of one-mark questions, with no negative marking, answered on OMR sheets
