ANSI/IICRC S500 FrameworkYou are here
Study S500 water categories and the condition-based need to reassess contamination; learn Classes 1-3 using the current approximate 5% and 40% affected-surface boundaries and Class 4 as deeply bound water in low-evaporation materials or assemblies. Material disposition and equipment decisions remain project-specific.
Psychrometry & Moisture Science
Understand relative humidity, specific humidity (GPP), dew point, vapor pressure, and wet-bulb depression. GPP and vapor-pressure comparisons help evaluate air conditions, but drying completion requires material readings against documented material-specific goals and suitable dry standards.
Evaluation, Equipment & Decontamination
Learn moisture-meter strategy, suitable dry standards, thermo-hygrometer use, and IR screening limitations. Compare equipment principles without treating class as a fixed equipment formula. For contaminated work, select containment, pressure, HEPA filtration, PPE, and respiratory protection through a site- and task-specific hazard assessment and work plan. Verify antimicrobial registration or a valid exemption and follow applicable directions and law.
Process, Documentation & Practice Exams
Practice initial inspection, moisture mapping, daily psychrometric and material readings, change documentation, and material-based completion decisions. Review OSHA electrical, lockout/tagout, HazCom, respiratory and asbestos requirements; EPA RRP boundaries; generator carbon-monoxide controls; and sewage hygiene. Use practice results diagnostically rather than treating a local score target as an official pass mark.
Can You Take the WRT Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •The official WRT page lists live-stream and in-person certification options; availability may change
- •Confirm current registration, exam delivery, timing, fee, retake, and renewal details with IICRC or the approved school
- •Do not infer that 'no prerequisites' means every delivery route allows exam-only registration

Quality Exam Prep Shouldn't Cost Hundreds
I'm Ran Chen, an engineer with 20+ years of coding experience. I passed my Life Insurance license, EA exam, SIE, Series 6, 63, 65, and finally the CFP® exam.
Through all these exams, one thing became clear: exam prep is expensive. But with AI, we can change that. Quality preparation can now be free for everyone.
What's Next After the WRT?
After passing the WRT, you can pursue these career paths
IICRC ASD
Applied Structural Drying Technician — the current official ASD page lists WRT as a prerequisite
IICRC AMRT
Applied Microbial Remediation Technician — a related mold and sewage remediation certification; verify its current enrollment requirements with IICRC
IICRC MRS
Mold Remediation Specialist — a separate experience-based certification whose current public page requires one year of verifiable mold-remediation field experience, not WRT or AMRT
