There are no prerequisites for the CCMT certification. Open enrollment is available. IICRC recommends completing the two-day (~14 hour) IICRC-approved CCMT course through a registered instructor, either in person or via live-stream, before sitting the exam.

The CCMT exam fee is $80. The exam is delivered online as a proctored test through IICRC and consists of approximately 90 multiple-choice questions. Candidates have a 45-day window to complete the exam after registration. The passing score is 75%.

The CCMT exam is based on the ANSI/IICRC S100 Standard for Professional Cleaning of Textile Floor Coverings, which defines procedures, methods, and systems for professional carpet maintenance and cleaning. CCMT emphasizes commercial application: building a maintenance program with appropriate prevention, daily vacuuming, interim cleaning, and restorative cleaning tiers, plus writing standard operating procedures for facility staff.

Interim cleaning is appearance-refresh work performed between deep cleans — typically encapsulation, bonnet/absorbent pad, or dry compound — designed to remove surface soil at low moisture, dry quickly, and extend the time between deep cleans. Restorative cleaning is deep cleaning, almost always hot water extraction (truck-mount or walk-behind), designed to remove embedded soil that interim methods cannot reach. A typical program runs interim cleaning monthly or quarterly and restorative cleaning every 12 months on heavy-use traffic lanes.

Encapsulation cleaning applies a crystallizing polymer solution to the carpet at low moisture, agitates it into the pile, and allows it to dwell typically 10–30 minutes. As the polymer dries, it surrounds and binds soil particles into brittle crystals that are then removed by routine vacuuming, typically beginning the next day. Encapsulation is the most common interim method on commercial accounts because of its fast dry time, low residue when applied per label, and ability to refresh appearance without disrupting occupants.

The CRI Seal of Approval (SOA) program is the only scientific certification for carpet cleaning equipment effectiveness. SOA vacuums are tested for soil removal, dust containment, and carpet appearance retention, with tiers — Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum — based on performance. Using SOA vacuums supports indoor environmental quality, can contribute to LEED EQ credits, and ensures the daily vacuuming tier of a maintenance program actually removes the ~80% of soil that is dry particulate before it grinds into the carpet.

A written carpet SOP should include: (1) the maintenance schedule (daily vacuuming routes, interim cleaning frequency, restorative cleaning frequency by zone); (2) spotting response protocols including the blot-don't-scrub rule, edge-to-center technique, and the IICRC spotting decision tree; (3) approved chemistry list with pH ranges and prohibited products; (4) equipment list including SOA-rated vacuums and approved interim machines; (5) walk-off mat care procedures; (6) safety and slip-fall controls during wet methods; and (7) inspection checklists and documentation requirements.
