Twelve lettered topics (A-L): developing rapport at all severity levels; explaining screening and assessment purpose and procedures; assessing immediate needs and readiness for change; recognizing interactions between co-occurring substance use, mental health, and other health conditions; assessing appropriateness of Medication Assisted Treatment; using culturally appropriate screening and assessment tools; conducting bio/psycho/social/spiritual clinical interviews; screening and assessing danger to self and/or others; formulating co-occurring diagnoses; using placement criteria to determine level of care; documenting results to support diagnoses and recommendations; and discussing diagnostic results and recommendations.

Eight lettered topics (A-H): formulating mutually agreed upon goals, objectives, treatment methods, and resources; identifying community resources supporting ongoing treatment and recovery; collaborating to review and modify the treatment plan; collaborating to strengthen recovery outside primary treatment; adapting intervention strategies to individual needs while recognizing multiple pathways of recovery; documenting treatment progress, outcomes, and continuing care; documenting collaboration, consultation, and referrals; and maintaining a therapeutic relationship with persons served and identified supports.

Thirteen lettered topics (A-M): evaluating safety and potential for return to use; developing risk management strategies for crises; identifying culturally sensitive counseling modalities grounded in theory or research; maintaining clinical records documenting progress; providing education on the structure, expectations, and limitations of counseling; using individual and group counseling modalities and techniques; educating about the effects of substance use; educating about signs and symptoms of mental health disorders; educating about pharmacotherapies; educating identified supports on strategies that sustain recovery; adapting education to be culturally and developmentally appropriate; using outcome data to adapt counseling strategies; and applying current professional codes of ethics and standards of practice.

Nine lettered topics (A-I): complying with jurisdictionally specific rules for co-occurring substance use, mental health, and health services; integrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging into practice; evaluating implicit and explicit biases; using supervision or consultation; integrating relevant research into clinical practice; recognizing technological advances for service delivery such as telehealth and electronic health records; addressing unethical practices; maintaining privacy and confidentiality under jurisdictionally specific rules; and preparing clinically accurate reports and records.
