How difficulty works within a paper
Within any single paper, questions increase in difficulty from start to finish. The early questions check foundational skills that most students at that year level should manage. The middle questions ask you to combine ideas or work through more than one step. The final questions are genuine problems that even strong students find demanding — and they are meant to be. Never panic when the last ten questions feel much harder than the first ten; that is the design, not a sign that you are failing.
Online Format and Question Types
ICAS Mathematics is sat online. Some questions are multiple-choice: you read the question (sometimes with a diagram, table or graph) and choose the correct option from the answers shown. This has two big consequences for your preparation:
- You do not need to show formal working, but working on scrap paper is still essential — most ICAS errors come from mental slips, not from misunderstood maths.
- On multiple-choice items the answer is already on the screen. If your calculated answer is not one of the options, you have made an error or misread the question. Use the options as a check, and use estimation and elimination (covered in Section 1.3) to narrow them down. On written questions there may be no options to fall back on, so your estimate and your recheck are the only safety net — which is a further reason to build the checking habit now.
The calculator rule
Personal calculators are not allowed. Instead, an on-screen calculator is provided only for the specific questions that need one — typically questions involving awkward decimals, larger numbers or percentages where arithmetic is not the skill being tested. For every other question, you are expected to calculate mentally or with written working.
