6.1 Complements (Resultative, Directional, Potential) & Aspect Particles (着, 了, 过)

Key Takeaways

  • HSK 5 Writing Part 1 (书写第一部分, Questions 91–98) presents 8 scrambled sentence-rearrangement items worth 5 points each (40 of the 100 Writing points, per CTI's published 评分说明), graded on four descriptive bands driven by complete word use, correct word order, and zero 错别字.
  • Resultative complements (结果补语) indicate the outcome or state achieved by an action (Verb + 完, 懂, 见, 到, 掉, 清楚, 惯); negation must strictly use 没 / 没有 placed before the verb (没听懂), never 不.
  • Directional complements express physical trajectory or extended figurative meanings (起来 initiation/upward, 下去 continuation, 出来 realization/emergence), while potential complements (Verb + 得/不 + Complement) express feasibility and strictly forbid co-occurrence with 把 or 被.
  • Dynamic aspect particles (动态助词: 着 for sustained state, 了 for completion or change, 过 for past experience) attach directly to verbs and govern argument placement.
  • The systematic 5-step rearrangement methodology—find the core verb, determine subject and object, attach modifiers, position complements and aspect particles, and append terminal punctuation (。/?/!)—eliminates structural misplacements.

6.1 Complements (Resultative, Directional, Potential) & Aspect Particles (着, 了, 过)

Core Principle: In HSK 5 Writing Part 1 (Questions 91–98), you are given scrambled syntactic constituents that must be reconstructed into a single, grammatically flawless sentence. Success hinges on identifying the core predicate verb first, anchoring its complements and aspect particles, and observing strict word-order constraints regarding negation and modal adverbs.

1. Writing Part 1 Architecture & Scoring Mechanics (书写第一部分概况)

Writing Part 1 constitutes 40% of the entire Writing section score (40 out of 100 points, which equals 13.3% of the total 300-point HSK 5 certificate):

Exam DimensionOfficial Specification
Question NumbersQuestions 91–98 (exactly 8 items)
Points per Item5.0 points per item (total: 40 points)
Format4 to 6 scrambled word chunks per item; candidate must arrange them into one sentence
Target Pacing12 to 15 minutes total (~1.5 to 2 minutes per item), leaving 25–28 minutes for Part 2 compositions
Terminal PunctuationStandard written-Chinese convention: close with a full-width 句号 。 / 问号 ? / 感叹号 ! (see the caveat below)

What CTI Actually Publishes About Scoring

Two things are worth separating here, because a great deal of prep material blurs them.

What is official. CTI's published 《新HSK考试评分说明》 states the HSK 5 书写 allocation exactly: 完成句子 — 8 题, 5 分/题, 满分 40; 写短文 — 2 题, 30 分/题, 满分 60; 合计 10 题, 满分 100. It then grades 完成句子 on four descriptive bands, not on a per-error point tariff:

BandOfficial criteria (完成句子)
高档分 (top band)包含全部词语且词序排列正确,无错别字 — every supplied word used, word order correct, no wrong characters.
中档分 (middle band)词序排列基本正确但增加了未提供词 — order broadly right but you added a word that was not supplied; or 词序排列正确但有 1–2 个错别字 — order correct but one or two wrong characters.
低档分 (low band)未包含所提供的全部词语 — a supplied word is missing; or 词序排列不正确 — the word order is wrong; or 有 3 个或 3 个以上错别字 — three or more wrong characters.
0 分空白 — left blank.

Raters award a band; CTI then converts rater scores to a standard score and finally to the reported 书写 score. That conversion is why no public table maps "one missing comma" to "minus one point".

What is convention, not published rule. The official band descriptors say nothing about terminal punctuation. Closing with 。/?/! is still the right habit — it is standard written Chinese, it is what every official answer key shows, and an unpunctuated string is easier for a rater to read as an incomplete fragment — but treat it as good practice rather than as a documented deduction.

[!IMPORTANT] Read the official bands for what they actually prioritise. Three levers decide your band and nothing else appears in the published criteria: (1) use every supplied chunk and add nothing; (2) get the word order right; (3) keep 错别字 at zero — one or two drop you to the middle band, three or more drop you to the low band. Optimise for those three before you worry about anything else.

2. Resultative Complements (结果补语)

A resultative complement attaches directly to a transitive or intransitive verb to indicate the outcome, physical culmination, or state produced by the action.

Subject + [没 / 没有] + Verb + Resultative Complement + [Object]

The Negation Rule for Resultative Complements

Because a resultative complement asserts that an action's result has already been realized, negation must use 没 (没有) to negate the realization of that result:

Subject + 没 (没有) + Verb + Complement + Object
  • Correct:没听懂他刚才说的那个专业术语。 (I did not understand the technical term he just spoke.)
  • Incorrect: *我不听懂他刚才说的那个专业术语。 (Unacceptable in standard Chinese; 不 negates habitual or future volition, never realized results).

[!IMPORTANT] Exception for Hypotheses: The negation 不 may appear with resultative complements only in hypothetical conditional clauses or rhetorical proverbs, such as "如果今天做不完,明天就不能按时提交" (If it cannot be completed today...), which transitions into a potential complement construction.

3. Directional Complements (趋向补语)

Directional complements describe the spatial vector of an action relative to the speaker or focal entity, or express extended figurative meanings.

Simple vs. Compound Directional Complements

  1. Simple Directional (简单趋向补语): Verb + (towards speaker) or (away from speaker).

    • Object Word Order Rule: If the object is a physical location (处所名词), it must be placed between the verb and 来/去:
      • Correct: 走进教室来 (walk into the classroom towards speaker)
      • Incorrect: *进来教室
    • If the object is a general thing (事物名词), it can be placed either before or after 来/去:
      • Both Correct: 带来了一份文件 / 带了一份文件来
  2. Compound Directional (复合趋向补语): Verb + 上来 / 上去, 下来 / 下去, 出来 / 出去, 进来 / 进去, 回来 / 回去, 过来 / 过去, 起来.

High-Yield Figurative / Extended Meanings (引申义)

HSK 5 exam questions rarely test simple physical movement; instead, they heavily test figurative and metaphorical extensions:

┌── 想起来 (Recall from memory) vs. 想出来 (Invent/devise a new idea)
├── 坚持下去 (Continue into the future) vs. 停下来 (Bring motion to halt)
Figurative Vectors ─┼── 看起来 (Appear/seem outward) vs. 看出来 (Discern hidden truth)
├── 热闹起来 (Begin an ongoing state: initiation)
└── 醒过来 (Return to normal consciousness/state)
  1. 起来 (qǐlai): Initiation / Upward Evaluation

    • Initiation of an action/state: 唱起来 (start singing), 活跃起来 (become active), 严肃起来 (turn solemn).
    • Evaluation from a sensory perspective: 这件羊毛大衣摸起来很舒服。 (This wool coat feels very comfortable to the touch.)
    • Memory retrieval: 我终于想起来那张银行卡的密码了。 (I finally recalled the password to that bank card.)
  2. 出来 (chūlai): Emergence from Concealment / Creation

    • Cognitive deduction/discernment: 我一眼就看出了他的真实意图。 (I saw through his true intentions at a glance.)
    • Creation/devising from nothing: 研发团队仅用两周就设计出了一套新方案。 (The R&D team designed a new plan in just two weeks.)
  3. 下去 (xiàqu): Continuation into the Future

    • Sustaining an ongoing activity: 只要大家齐心协力,这个项目就能顺利进行下去。 (As long as everyone works together, this project can proceed smoothly into the future.)
    • Contrast with 下来 (xiàlai): Downward transition from past to present, or bringing an action to a steady state: 汽车缓缓停了下来。 (The car slowly came to a stop.)

4. Potential Complements (可能补语)

Potential complements express whether an action can or cannot achieve a result or trajectory, governed by internal capacity or external conditions.

谈得上 / 谈不上Evaluation thresholdModesty / Qualification我只是懂一点皮毛,根本谈不上精通。 (I only know a little superficial surface; it can't at all be considered mastery.)

The Golden Incompatibility Rule: Potential Complements vs. 把 / 被

[!CAUTION] CRITICAL EXAM TRAP: A potential complement can NEVER co-occur with a 把 (disposal) or 被 (passive) construction. In HSK 5 sentence rearrangement, if you see chunks containing both a potential complement (like 做不完 or 提不动) and the marker 把 or 被, you must restructure the sentence so that 把/被 is paired with a modal verb (不能/无法) instead, or eliminate the 把/被 frame altogether.

  • Ungrammatical: *他把这本厚书读不完。

  • Correct Restructuring 1:读不完这本厚书。

  • Correct Restructuring 2:不能把这本厚书读完

  • Ungrammatical: *那个重箱子被他提不动。

  • Correct Restructuring 1: 那个重箱子他提不动

  • Correct Restructuring 2: 那个重箱子没有被提起来。 / 那个重箱子无法被提起来

5. Degree and State Complements (程度与情态补语)

State complements (情态补语) evaluate how an action is performed, its manner, or the observable state resulting from it, linked by the particle (de):

Verb / Adjective + 得 + Adverbial Clause / Stative Evaluation

Key Patterns in Exam Items

  1. Verb + Object Reduplication (动词带宾语时的重叠):

    • When a verb takes an object, the verb must be repeated before 得:
      • Formula: Subject + Verb + Object + Verb + 得 + Complement
      • Example:汉字写得非常工整规范。 (He writes Chinese characters exceptionally neatly and standardly.)
    • Alternative (Topic-Fronted): 他的汉字写得非常工整规范。
  2. Exaggerated / Resulting Emotional State (程度引申):

    • 高兴得跳了起来 (so happy that he jumped up)
    • 累得上气不接下气 (so exhausted as to be panting for breath)
    • 激动得热泪盈眶 (so moved that warm tears filled the eyes)
  3. Fixed Degree Markers (程度补语极性标记):

    • Adjective + 极了 (extremely): 精彩极了 (spectacular), 糟糕极了 (dreadful).
    • Adjective + 得很 (very much): 难过得很 (terribly sad), 麻烦得很 (extremely troublesome).
    • Adjective + 得多 / 多了 (much more): 便宜得多 (far cheaper), 熟练多了 (much more proficient).

6. Dynamic Aspect Particles (动态助词: 着, 了, 过)

Aspect particles indicate the temporal perspective of an action relative to the discourse context rather than absolute calendar tense.

Aspect Comparison Matrix

Aspect ParticleGrammatical FunctionTypical Syntactic PatternDiagnostic Clue / Exam Example
(zhe)Continuous, durative state; background action accompanying main verbVerb + (+ Noun)
Verb 1 + + Verb 2办公桌上放着一份未签名的合同。 (A non-signed contract is lying on the office desk.)
微笑着向远道而来的客人打招呼。 (He smilingly greeted the guests who came from afar.)
(le)Realization / completion of action (动态了1); change of state (语气了2)Verb + + Measure + Noun
Clause + 会议已经通过了那项雄心勃勃的投资预算。 (The meeting has already passed that ambitious investment budget.)
阴了,快要下雨了。 (The sky has turned overcast; it is about to rain.)
(guo)Past experiential aspect (action occurred at least once, not ongoing)Subject + [没] + Verb + + Object他年轻时曾经在海外留学过两年。 (When he was young, he once studied abroad for two years.)
我从来没吃过这么地道的北京烤鸭。 (I have never eaten such authentic Peking roast duck.)

Crucial Aspect Distinctions on the Exam

  1. Verb-le (了1) vs. Sentence-final le (了2):
    • Verb-le: 我买了三本书。 (I bought three books. — Focuses on the completion of the action).
    • Double-le (Ongoing duration): 他在清华大学学三年中文。 (He has studied Chinese at Tsinghua for three years [and is still studying there now].)
  2. 着 (Continuous State) in Existential Frames:
    • Spatial locative + Verb + + Indefinite Noun: 墙上挂着一张世界地图。 (On the wall hangs a world map.)

7. The 5-Step Sentence Rearrangement Protocol (五步解题法)

When confronting scrambled items (Questions 91–98), execute this repeatable 5-step algorithm:

Step 1: 找谓语核心 ──➔ Identify the core predicate verb or adjective
Step 2: 定主谓宾 ───➔ Determine the primary grammatical Subject and Object
Step 3: 挂修饰语 ───➔ Attach Attributives (定语+的) to Nouns, Adverbials (状语+地) to Verbs
Step 4: 落补语助词 ─➔ Anchor Complements (完/好/到/出) and Aspect Particles (着/了/过)
Step 5: 补标点符号 ─➔ Append the mandatory terminal Chinese punctuation mark (。/?/!)

Step-by-Step Worked Exam Items

Worked Example 1: Resultative Complement & Negation

  • Scrambled Chunks: 听懂 / 那个深奥的哲学道理 / 没 / 他 / 彻底
  • Step 1 (Predicate): 核心谓语动词是「听」,带有结果补语「懂」,构成「听懂」。
  • Step 2 (Subject & Object): 施事主语是「他」,受事宾语是「道理」。
  • Step 3 (Modifiers): 「那个深奥的哲学」修饰「道理」,作定语;「彻底」作状语,修饰谓语动词。
  • Step 4 (Negation & Complements): 否定副词「没」必须置于状语与谓语动词之前:「没彻底听懂」。
  • Step 5 (Punctuation): 陈述句补上全角中文句号「。」。
  • Reconstructed Sentence: 他没彻底听懂那个深奥的哲学道理。

Worked Example 2: Compound Directional Complement with Extended Meaning

  • Scrambled Chunks: 坚持 / 这份辛苦的工作 / 很难 / 他 / 下去
  • Step 1 (Predicate & Complement): 谓语动词「坚持」与复合趋向补语的引申义「下去」组合成「坚持下去」,表示把当前的动作或状态向未来延续。
  • Step 2 (Subject & Object): 施事是「他」,受事是「这份辛苦的工作」,「很难」作状语修饰谓语。
  • Step 3 (The decisive constraint): 「下去」是趋向补语,后面不能再带宾语。因此「坚持下去」与「这份辛苦的工作」不能直接拼成「*坚持下去这份辛苦的工作」。受事只有两个合法位置:用「把」字提到动词前,或直接提到句首充当话题。
  • Step 4 (Choose by the chunks you were given): 本题所给词语中没有「把」,所以只能走话题句路线,把受事提到句首。
  • Step 5 (Punctuation): 陈述句补上全角中文句号「。」。
  • Reconstructed Sentence: 这份辛苦的工作他很难坚持下去。
  • (对照:如果试卷另外给出「把」,则标准答案为 他很难把这份辛苦的工作坚持下去。 不要自行添加题目没有提供的词语——「增加了未提供词」在官方评分标准中会被降到中档分。)
