7.2 Military Rank Structure: Army, Navy and Air Force
Key Takeaways
Recruits enter the Ghana Armed Forces as a Private (Army), an Ordinary Seaman (Navy) or an Aircraftman (Air Force).
Army other ranks rise from Private through Lance Corporal, Corporal, Sergeant and Staff Sergeant to Warrant Officer Class II and Class I.
Ghana Navy ratings run from Ordinary Seaman, Able Seaman and Leading Seaman through Petty Officer Second and First Class to Chief Petty Officer.
An Army Captain equals a naval Lieutenant and an Air Force Flight Lieutenant, while an Army Colonel equals a naval Captain and an Air Force Group Captain.
Officers are commissioned by the President on the advice of the Armed Forces Council under Article 212(3) of the Constitution.
7.2 Military Rank Structure: Army, Navy and Air Force
Rank shows a service member's authority, responsibility and seniority. A recruit who passes selection starts at the bottom of the other ranks and must recognise every rank above them from the first day of training. Rank questions are also popular in general-knowledge papers because each service uses different titles for equivalent grades.
Officers and Other Ranks
The Ghana Armed Forces, like other Commonwealth-pattern forces, divide personnel into two groups:
- Commissioned officers. Under Article 212(3) of the Constitution, the President grants commissions to officers on the advice of the Armed Forces Council. Officer cadets train at the Ghana Military Academy (GMA) in Teshie before commissioning. Officers command units and staff branches.
- Other ranks. Soldiers, ratings and airmen enlist as recruits and train at their service's recruit schools, such as the Army Recruit Training School at Shai Hills. Promotion brings them into the ranks of non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and, at the top, warrant officers, who are the senior advisers on discipline, drill and standards in every unit.
Other Ranks in Each Service (lowest to highest)
| Step | Ghana Army | Ghana Navy (ratings) | Ghana Air Force |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Private | Ordinary Seaman (OS) | Aircraftman |
| 2 | Lance Corporal | Able Seaman (AS) | Leading Aircraftman |
| 3 | Corporal | Leading Seaman (LS) | Corporal |
| 4 | Sergeant | Petty Officer Second Class (PO2) | Sergeant |
| 5 | Staff Sergeant | Petty Officer First Class (PO1) | Flight Sergeant |
| 6 | Warrant Officer Class II | Chief Petty Officer (CPO) | Warrant Officer Class II |
| 7 | Warrant Officer Class I | — | Warrant Officer Class I |
The Navy column follows the ratings ranks published on the Ghana Navy website, which run from Ordinary Seaman to Chief Petty Officer. The steps are listed for learning order only; they are not an official equivalence table between the services.
Points examiners like to test
- The entry ranks are Private (Army), Ordinary Seaman (Navy) and Aircraftman (Air Force).
- Warrant Officer Class I is the highest other rank in the Army and Air Force, above Warrant Officer Class II.
- The Air Force's Flight Sergeant sits between Sergeant and Warrant Officer Class II.
- The Navy uses Petty Officer grades where the Army uses Sergeant grades.
Commissioned Officer Ranks and Equivalents
Officer ranks have well-known equivalents across the three services. Learn them as rows:
| Grade | Ghana Army | Ghana Navy | Ghana Air Force |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior officer | Second Lieutenant | (see note) | Pilot Officer |
| Junior officer | Lieutenant | Sub-Lieutenant | Flying Officer |
| Junior officer | Captain | Lieutenant | Flight Lieutenant |
| Senior officer | Major | Lieutenant Commander | Squadron Leader |
| Senior officer | Lieutenant Colonel | Commander | Wing Commander |
| Senior officer | Colonel | Captain | Group Captain |
| One-star | Brigadier General | Commodore | Air Commodore |
| Two-star | Major General | Rear Admiral | Air Vice-Marshal |
| Three-star | Lieutenant General | Vice Admiral | Air Marshal |
| Four-star | General | Admiral | Air Chief Marshal |
Note: the Ghana Navy's most junior officer grades, Midshipman and Acting Sub-Lieutenant, sit below Sub-Lieutenant.
Traps in rank equivalence
- A naval Lieutenant equals an Army Captain, not an Army Lieutenant. The Army Lieutenant's naval equivalent is Sub-Lieutenant.
- A naval Captain equals an Army Colonel. Do not confuse it with the Army rank of Captain, which is three grades lower.
- A Commodore (Navy) and an Air Commodore (Air Force) are one-star officers equal to a Brigadier General.
- Lieutenant Colonel is the threshold in Article 214: the Armed Forces Council advises on promotions of officers above that rank.
Ranks and Appointments
Rank is a person's grade; appointment is the job they hold. In 2025–2026 official sources show these pairings:
| Appointment | Rank of the holder in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Chief of the Defence Staff | Lieutenant General (three-star) |
| Chief of the Army Staff | Major General (two-star) |
| General Officer Commanding, Southern or Central Command | Brigadier General (one-star) |
| Commanding Officer of the Army Recruit Training School | Lieutenant Colonel |
| Commanding Officer of an infantry battalion | Lieutenant Colonel |
Warrant officers hold important appointments too. The senior warrant officer of a unit is often its Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM), and a senior Warrant Officer sits on the Armed Forces Council under Article 211.
Military Courtesies Every Recruit Learns
These customs are standard in Commonwealth-pattern forces and are taught from the first week of training:
- Saluting. A junior salutes a commissioned officer first, and the officer returns the salute. In the Army tradition, the hand salute is given when wearing uniform headdress; without headdress, personnel stand to attention instead.
- Forms of address. Officers are addressed as "Sir" or "Ma'am". Recruits also address warrant officers as "Sir" or "Ma'am". NCOs are addressed by rank, for example "Sergeant" or "Corporal".
- Standing to attention. Personnel come to attention when addressed by a superior or when a senior officer enters.
- Chain of command. Requests and complaints go through the immediate superior, not over their head.
- Bearing on and off duty. In September 2026, the officer reviewing the ARTS pass-out parade warned new soldiers against misusing military uniforms for unauthorised activities such as land guarding and debt collection, and urged discretion on social media to protect operational security.
