1.3 Computer-Based Testing Interface, Provided Tools, and Scoring Standards

The FTCE General Knowledge Test is delivered as a computer-based test (CBT) at Pearson VUE test centers in Florida and across the country. Security procedures are strict. Pearson asks you to arrive 30 minutes before your appointment. You must bring two valid, unexpired forms of identification: the first must be U.S. government-issued (or a passport) with a clear photo and signature, and the second may be another ID from that list or one with a photo or signature. The name on both must match your registration. You may have your palm vein image captured at check-in, and personal items are stored outside the testing room. Arriving late or without proper ID can mean being refused admission with no refund.

The Testing Interface

Pearson publishes free CBT tutorials for the standard multiple-choice format and for constructed-response (essay) items. Work through both before test day so the screens feel familiar. Typical features include:

• Navigation: buttons to move forward and back through the questions in the current subtest.
• Flag for review: mark a question and return to it from a review screen before you finish the subtest.
• Timer: the remaining time for the active subtest is displayed on screen.
• Essay response box: you type the Essay (825) response into an on-screen text box. Plan to proofread carefully; do not count on spell-check or grammar help.

Breaks and Time Management

• Scheduled 15-minute break: Pearson's GK page states that candidates who take all four subtests in a single session receive a 15-minute break. On-screen instructions announce a scheduled break and its length. During a scheduled break you may access the personal items you stored and may leave the test center; the administrator checks your ID when you return.
• Unscheduled breaks: You may step out at other times, but the exam clock keeps running, you may not leave the test center, and you may access only food, drink, or medication.

Provided Tools: Calculator and Mathematics Reference Sheet

You may not bring your own calculator. For the Mathematics subtest (828), Pearson provides an on-screen four-function calculator and an on-screen Mathematics Reference Sheet. The test proctor gives you an erasable notepad and pen for scratch work.

The On-Screen Calculator

The official materials describe it only as a four-function calculator (add, subtract, multiply, divide). Treat it as a tool for arithmetic, not algebra:

• Do not expect exponent, parentheses, or fraction keys, and do not assume it applies the order of operations to a long string of entries.
• Evaluate grouped terms and powers yourself, write down intermediate results, and use the calculator for the individual operations.
• Practice with a basic four-function calculator so you are not relying on scientific or graphing features that will not be there.

What the Official Reference Sheet Contains

The GK Mathematics Reference Sheet (a two-page PDF you can download from Pearson's FTCE site) provides:

• Area: triangle $A = \frac{1}{2}bh$; rectangle $A = \ell w$; trapezoid $A = \frac{1}{2}h(b_1 + b_2)$; parallelogram $A = bh$; circle $A = \pi r^2$.
• Circumference: $C = \pi d = 2\pi r$, with the note to use 3.14 or $\frac{22}{7}$ for $\pi$.
• Surface area: a prism or pyramid is the sum of the areas of all faces; a cylinder is $S.A. = 2(\pi r^2) + 2(\pi r)h$; a sphere is $S.A. = 4\pi r^2$.
• Volume: a prism or cylinder is $V = Bh$ (area of base times height); a pyramid or cone is $V = \frac{1}{3}Bh$; a sphere is $V = \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3$.
• Coordinate formulas: the Pythagorean theorem $a^2 + b^2 = c^2$; slope $\frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}$; distance $\sqrt{(x_2 - x_1)^2 + (y_2 - y_1)^2}$; midpoint $\left(\frac{x_1 + x_2}{2}, \frac{y_1 + y_2}{2}\right)$.
• Rates: simple interest $I = prt$ and distance $d = rt$.
• Conversions: 1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches; 1 mile = 1,760 yards = 5,280 feet; 1 acre = 43,560 square feet; hours, minutes, and seconds; cups, pints, quarts, and gallons; 16 ounces = 1 pound; 2,000 pounds = 1 ton; and the metric relationships among liters, milliliters, cubic centimeters, meters, kilometers, grams, and kilograms.

The sheet does not list rectangle perimeter, percent-change, mean, or probability formulas, and it does not list the quadratic formula or special right triangles. Know those yourself. The sheet also notes that four-digit metric numbers are printed without a comma (9960 kilometers) and larger metric numbers use a space instead of a comma (12 500 liters). Don't let that formatting surprise you on test day.

Scoring Standards: Cut Scores and Holistic Rubrics

The State Board of Education approved new passing scores for every GK subtest in November 2024, effective January 1, 2025 (Rule 6A-4.0021(7)(c)).

You must pass all four subtests to pass the GK, but each subtest is scored and reported on its own.

The Scaled Score System (Multiple-Choice Subtests)

• Your raw score, the number of questions answered correctly, is converted to a scaled score so that different forms share one passing score: 200.
• Forms are equated for difficulty. A slightly harder form may need fewer correct answers to reach 200, which is why FLDOE publishes the percentages above as maximums (the version updated October 1, 2025, effective January 1, 2026).
• There is no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave a question blank.

Holistic Essay Scoring

The Essay is scored holistically: raters weigh strengths and weaknesses together rather than counting errors. The official criteria are Focus, Organization, Support, Vocabulary and Sentence Structure, and Grammar and Conventions.

• Each rater assigns a 1 (rudimentary), 2 (emergent), 3 (adequate), or 4 (effective).
• The two ratings are added for a total from 2 to 8.
• A total of 6 or more passes (for example, 3 + 3 or 4 + 3). A 5 (such as 3 + 2) does not pass.
• Ratings more than 1 point apart (for example, 4 and 2) are not simply added. A Chief Rater reviews the response and resolves the discrepancy.
• A blank response is reported as "B," and an off-topic or otherwise unscorable response as "U."

Score Reporting Timelines

A passing result is reported simply as PASS. A NOT PASS result shows your numeric score and a performance analysis giving the number and percentage of questions you answered correctly in each competency. Use it to target your study before the retake. If a multiple-choice score falls within 10 scaled-score points of 200, or the Essay did not pass, you may request a score verification session.
