What the CPEA Is, and Who Runs It
The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC®) was established in 1972 as an institution of the Caribbean Community. It developed the CPEA to replace the old single-day Common Entrance examination with a model that measures learning across a whole year rather than one morning. St Vincent and the Grenadines, for example, switched from Common Entrance to the CPEA external examination in 2014.
CXC describes the CPEA as an assessment of literacies rather than of school subjects. The literacies named in the official CPEA Standards are language, mathematical, civic and scientific. That wording matters when you read older CPEA material: "civic literacy" is the CXC label for what your timetable and your results slip will call Social Studies.
The CPEA is not used in every CXC territory. Ministries of Education decide whether to adopt it. Territories that ran the CPEA in 2026 include Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Why 40% is Decided Before You Sit a Paper
Almost half your CPEA mark is already banked before examination week. Pupils routinely score higher on the internal component than on the external papers — in Grenada in 2026 the internal national means sat in the low 80s while the external means sat in the low-to-mid 60s. Neglecting your project, your book report or your writing portfolio therefore costs far more than a few extra hours of last-minute revision can win back.
The Four External Papers
This is the single most important structural fact in this guide, and it is the one most often reported incorrectly by unofficial websites and by older CXC handbooks.

CXC titles the third paper simply Science; some territories and school timetables call the same paper Integrated Science. They are the same examination.
Social Studies Is Examined Externally
CXC's 2016 Administrators' and Parents' Handbooks state that "the external examination will assess the three core literacies namely English, Mathematics, and Science." That statement is out of date. A fourth paper was added:
- CXC publishes a Social Studies specimen paper on the official CPEA page, coded 06243011/SPEC 2017, alongside the Language, Mathematics and Science specimens.
- Grenada's official results table reports an external national mean for Social Studies for every year from 2018 to 2026 (64.27 in 2026).
- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' 2026 notice states that over the two days "students will complete multiple-choice papers in Mathematics, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Science."
- The Turks and Caicos Islands entered its 2026 candidates "in Language, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science."
When an old handbook and a current examination timetable disagree, the current timetable wins. Plan to sit four papers.
Three Options, Not Four
Every CPEA specimen paper carries the same instruction: "Each question has three possible answers: (A), (B), (C)." This is unlike CSEC and CAPE, which use four options. Three options changes the arithmetic of guessing — a blind guess is right about one time in three, not one in four — and it changes elimination strategy, which section 1.3 covers in detail.
How the Final Mark Is Built
Final CPEA percentage = (Internal Assessment score × 0.40) + (External Assessment score × 0.60)
Each territory's Ministry of Education then uses that percentage for secondary school placement. Placement rules differ by island: Grenada, for instance, operates a Universal Secondary Education policy reinstated in May 2023, under which every candidate transitions to a secondary school, and the CPEA percentage determines which school rather than whether the pupil advances.
Reporting Bands
CPEA results are reported in competency bands rather than as a simple pass or fail. Ministries publish 41% as the threshold for the Near Competent band, with Competent and Advanced Competence above it. CXC does not publish the exact cut-off percentages for the Competent and Advanced Competence bands, so treat any specific figure you see quoted for those two bands as unverified.
Moderation of the Internal Mark
Because the internal 40% is awarded by your own teacher, CXC moderates it so that a mark earned in one school means the same as a mark earned in another. Schools submit samples of pupil work for review, and where a school's marking sits well above or well below the standard, CXC adjusts that school's distribution.
