1.1 About the ASQ CQIA Exam

Key Takeaways

  • The ASQ Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA) computer-delivered exam has 110 multiple-choice questions (100 scored, 10 unscored pretest) with an exam time of 3 hours and 18 minutes (198 minutes) inside a three-and-a-half-hour appointment.
  • ASQ scores the CQIA on a criterion-referenced scale and requires 550 points out of a possible 750 to be certified; ASQ does not release the actual scale score to candidates who pass.
  • The current Body of Knowledge has five sections with fixed scored-question counts: Quality Basics (30), Team Basics (16), Improvement (40), Supplier Relationship (7), and Customer Relationship (7).
  • The exam is open book, but every reference must be permanently bound (stitched, glued, spiral, comb, or a fastened ring binder); loose-leaf sheets and loose sticky notes are prohibited, and Post-its are allowed only as book tabs attached before arrival.
  • Candidates must have worked in a full-time, paid role and must have two years of work experience, or an associate degree, or two years of equivalent higher education; the CQIA is a lifetime credential with no recertification requirement.

1.1 About the ASQ CQIA Exam

The Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA) is an internationally recognized professional credential awarded by the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Designed for individuals who are either entering the quality profession or seeking to demonstrate foundational mastery of continuous improvement principles, the CQIA validates knowledge of quality tools, team processes, customer-supplier relations, and foundational quality concepts.

Whether you work as a process technician, administrative professional, team leader, line supervisor, healthcare worker, software tester, or manufacturing associate, the CQIA establishes a recognized baseline of operational competence. It demonstrates that you understand the language of quality and can actively participate on improvement teams.

Exam Architecture & Delivery Mechanics

The CQIA exam is administered globally through Prometric Testing Centers as a Computer-Based Test (CBT), with remote proctoring available via Prometric ProProctor in eligible regions.

Scored vs. Unscored Questions

The exam presents 110 questions, but your score is computed from only 100 operational questions. The remaining 10 items are unscored pretest questions embedded seamlessly throughout the exam. ASQ uses these pretest items to gather psychometric data and validate item difficulty before deploying them on future test forms.

Because pretest items are indistinguishable from scored questions, examinees must treat every item with equal diligence.

Scoring Methodology & The Angoff Standard

ASQ employs a criterion-referenced scoring model rather than a norm-referenced (curved) system. Candidates are evaluated strictly against established performance standards of minimum competence, not against the performance of fellow test takers.

  1. Modified Angoff Method: A panel of subject matter experts reviews each question to estimate the proportion of minimally competent candidates who would answer it correctly. The sum of these ratings establishes the raw cut score for each specific exam form.
  2. Scaled Scoring (maximum 750): Because different exam forms vary slightly in statistical difficulty, raw scores are converted to a scaled score with a maximum of 750 points. ASQ does not publish the bottom of the reporting scale.
  3. Passing Standard (550): ASQ states plainly that you "need a score of 550 points out of a possible 750 to be certified." This standard is constant across administrations.
  4. Passing candidates are not told their score. ASQ deliberately withholds the scale score from candidates who pass, because the exam is built to separate competent from not-competent candidates, not to rank them — reporting a 580 versus a 560 would be a misuse of the instrument. Candidates who fail do receive a detailed analysis showing correct and incorrect counts in each BoK subtopic.

The Five Body of Knowledge (BoK) Sections

The current ASQ CQIA Body of Knowledge is divided into five sections. Unlike many certifications that publish percentage bands, ASQ publishes an exact scored-question count for each section, and those five counts sum to the 100 scored items.

SectionTitleScored QuestionsShareCore Subject Areas
IQuality Basics3030%Quality definitions; the quality plan; QA vs. QC vs. continuous quality improvement; organizational culture; employee involvement and empowerment; systems, processes and SIPOC; common vs. special cause variation; standardization; benefits of quality; the six foundational thought leaders (Shewhart, Deming, Juran, Ishikawa, Crosby, Feigenbaum).
IITeam Basics1616%Team purpose, types and value; the seven named stakeholder roles (sponsor, champion, facilitator, leader, member, scribe, timekeeper); initiating teams; selecting team members; team stages; team conflict and groupthink; team decision-making.
IIIImprovement4040%Six Sigma and DMAIC; lean concepts and tools; benchmarking; incremental vs. breakthrough improvement; brainstorming, PDCA, affinity diagrams, COPQ and internal audits; the improvement tools (flowcharts, histograms, Pareto charts, scatter diagrams, check sheets, control charts, decision trees); root cause analysis; risk management (FMEA and SWOT).
IVSupplier Relationship77%Supplier selection criteria and the approval process; supplier relationships, their challenges, and the effects of a diverse supply base; supplier performance measures including quality performance, on-time delivery, and level of service.
VCustomer Relationship77%Internal vs. external customer identification; Voice of the Customer data gathering and use; the complaint process; customer needs and quality function deployment (QFD).

Weighting trap. Many third-party CQIA outlines still circulate an obsolete four-part split that merges suppliers and customers and shows Improvement at roughly 28%. On the current BoK, Improvement is the single largest section at 40 questions — larger than Quality Basics — and Supplier Relationship and Customer Relationship together are only 14 questions. Section III alone is worth more than sections II, IV, and V combined.

Together, Section III (Improvement) and Section I (Quality Basics) account for 70 of the 100 scored questions, and they deserve roughly 70% of your study time.

Cognitive Levels

Every BoK entry ends with a parenthetical cognitive level drawn from the revised Bloom's taxonomy — Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, Create — that caps how hard a question on that topic may be. Most CQIA entries are capped at Understand or Apply. Only three entries reach Analyze: systems and processes/SIPOC (I.A.6), team conflict (II.C.4), and — at the low end — standardization sits at Remember (I.A.8), as does supplier selection (IV.A). Use these caps to calibrate effort: a Remember-level topic will never ask you to build something, and an Analyze-level topic will.

Open-Book Exam Policy & Binding Regulations

The ASQ CQIA exam is an open-book examination. However, Prometric enforces strict security rules regarding what materials can be brought into the testing station.

Important: Prometric test proctors inspect all physical references prior to room entry. Any book containing loose papers, loose sticky flags, or inserted sample exam questions will be confiscated, or the candidate may be denied entry.

Eligibility Requirements & Certification Path

Unlike senior ASQ certifications (such as CQE or CMQ/OE which demand 8 years of professional experience), the CQIA has an accessible entry bar designed to encourage workforce development.

Qualification Criteria

ASQ states one baseline condition and then three alternative routes. The baseline: candidates must have worked in a full-time, paid role. On top of that, you satisfy one of the following:

  1. Experience route: two (2) years of work experience; OR
  2. Associate degree route: an associate degree; OR
  3. Higher-education route: two years of equivalent higher education.

ASQ expresses the education routes in years, not credit hours — do not assume a specific credit-hour threshold, and do not assume an unpaid internship or volunteer role counts toward the experience route, because ASQ's stated requirement is a full-time, paid role.

Fees, Retakes, and Deadlines

ItemAmount / Rule
Initial exam fee (non-member)$434
ASQ member price$334 (members save $100 on the initial exam fee)
Retake fee$234
Appointment change fee (Prometric)$130
Application refused / withdrawnRefund minus a $130 processing fee

The CBT exam runs in bi-monthly testing windows (for example, August, October, and December 2026, then February 2027), each with an application deadline roughly two to three weeks before the window opens. Retake rules matter: there is no limit on the number of retakes, the reduced retake rate is available for two years from your previous attempt, you must retake within that two-year period or reapply at full price, and you may not retake in the same testing window as your original attempt.

Results arrive fast on CBT — preliminary pass/fail appears on screen at the Prometric center, and official results are emailed within about a week (longer for pilot exams built on a revised Body of Knowledge).

Certification Status

The CQIA is awarded as a lifetime credential. Unlike ASQ's higher-tier certifications, the CQIA does not require the accumulation of Recertification Units (RUs) or periodic re-examination every three years.

The ASQ Professional Certification Ladder

The CQIA serves as the entry-level gateway into ASQ's comprehensive professional credential hierarchy.
