The Online Lead Auditor Exam Format

CQI/IRCA structures all Lead Auditor online exams the same way, regardless of scheme (EMS, QMS, ISMS, OH&S):

Two structural facts follow directly from that table and are worth internalising before you read another clause:

• The time is not distributed evenly per question. Sections 1 to 3 allow roughly 100 seconds per question; Section 4 allows about 193 seconds and Section 5 about 225 seconds. CQI/IRCA is signalling that the later questions are longer scenario items that require reading and judgement, not recall.
• Section 4 alone outweighs Sections 1, 2 and 3 combined. If your revision time is split evenly across the five sections, you have mis-allocated it.

Note on the written variant. The CQI/IRCA course page also references a 2-hour written examination. Some Approved Training Partners still deliver a paper exam rather than the SARAS online exam. Confirm with your ATP which format you are sitting; the content areas are the same, but the timing and question mechanics differ.

Question Types

The online exam is not purely multiple choice. CQI/IRCA lists five mechanics:

1. Multiple choice — choose one correct answer.
2. Multiple response — choose several correct answers. Partial guessing is punished; you must identify the full correct set.
3. Fill in the blanks — drag and drop the correct words into a sentence.
4. Matching — drag and drop responses to correctly match items (for example, matching findings to grades, or clauses to requirements).

Practise sequencing and matching deliberately. Being able to recite the audit process is different from being able to place ten steps in the right order under time pressure. Marking and the Pass Requirement

The CQI and IRCA Online Exams: Guide for Learners states the marking model explicitly:

• Total marks available: 80 across the 40 questions.
• A learner must achieve the minimum pass mark for EACH domain and an overall score of 40 marks (50%).

That is a compensatory-with-floors model, and it is the single most important logistical fact about this exam. A candidate who scores brilliantly on Section 4 but neglects Section 2 can clear 40 marks overall and still fail, because the per-domain floor was missed. There is no safe section to skip.

CQI/IRCA does not publish the individual per-domain minimum on its public pages, and its public course pages do not quote a headline percentage. Confirm the current marking scheme with your Approved Training Partner rather than relying on third-party revision sites.

All questions are computer-marked, so there is no examiner discretion and no partial credit for reasoning shown.

Open Book — Within Strict Limits

You will need access to a copy of the ISO management systems requirements standard associated with your course (for PR315, that is ISO 14001:2015) to answer some questions. It may be paper or electronic.

What is not permitted is decisive: you may not use the internet to search for answers. The permission is narrow — the requirements standard itself, not your course notes library, not ISO 19011, not a search engine, unless your ATP tells you otherwise. Providing access to, disclosing, photographing, recording or transmitting exam questions or answers in any form is treated as malpractice.

Practical consequence: know your way around ISO 14001 physically. If you have to hunt for Clause 9.1.2 during a 100-second question, the open book is costing you marks rather than earning them. Tab the standard by clause before the exam.
