The current CMQ/OE at a glance

The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) examination measures knowledge across a defined Body of Knowledge (BoK). Before building a study schedule, separate the facts that govern the exam from the methods you will use to learn the material. For 2026, the revised BoK is effective July 1, 2026. That date matters because an effective BoK identifies the domains and question distribution a candidate should organize preparation around. Avoid assuming that an older outline has the same domain names or question counts.

Computer-based testing (CBT)

ASQ administers the computer-based CMQ/OE examination through Prometric. The CBT is in English and contains 180 multiple-choice questions. Of those items, 165 are scored and 15 are unscored. You will not be told which individual questions are unscored, so treat every question as one that contributes to the result.

The testing facts are easy to confuse because two time figures apply:

A useful pacing calculation is not a prediction of difficulty; it is simply a way to protect decision time. Four hours and 18 minutes equals 258 minutes. Dividing 258 minutes by 180 items yields about 1.43 minutes per item, or roughly 86 seconds. Use that figure to recognize when a single question is consuming a disproportionate share of your available time. Mark a difficult item, preserve its context, and return after completing questions you can resolve more efficiently.

Paper-and-pencil format

ASQ also lists a paper-and-pencil format. It has 165 multiple-choice questions and a 4-hour exam time. Some paper-and-pencil locations offer the exam in Mandarin. These facts should not be blended with the CBT figures: the CBT has 180 total items and a 4-hour-18-minute testing period, while the paper-and-pencil format has 165 items and four hours.

Score, fee, and reported pass rate

CMQ/OE uses a scaled score. The official passing score is 550 out of 750 scaled points. A scaled score is the published reporting scale, so do not convert 550/750 into a required raw-question percentage. The exam has scored and unscored items, and ASQ publishes the passing result in scaled-score terms.

ASQ's 2024 certification exam pass-rate table reports a 67% CMQ/OE pass rate. This is a historical ASQ table value, not a personal probability or a target percentage of correct answers. Your preparation standard should remain command of the BoK and the ability to make defensible choices under the actual time limit.

The initial examination fee is $585 for non-members and $485 for ASQ members. Membership therefore saves $100 on the initial fee. The official retake fee is $385. Keep these amounts distinct when making a budget: the member price applies to the initial examination fee, and the retake has its own listed fee.

Eligibility: experience and one education waiver

The baseline requirement is 10 years of work experience in one or more CMQ/OE BoK areas, including 5 years in a decision-making position. Education can reduce the total experience requirement, but ASQ permits one waiver only. Do not stack multiple credentials to create a larger reduction.

A clean eligibility check has three parts: identify your experience in BoK areas, verify that five years were in decision-making, then apply the single highest applicable education waiver. This sequence prevents a common planning mistake: treating a degree waiver as a substitute for the decision-making requirement. It reduces the total experience requirement; it does not erase the stated five-year decision-making component.

Open-book means prepared, not unprepared

The CMQ/OE exam is open book, and ASQ permits bound references only. The rule is about the physical condition of materials: references must be bound. Your study preparation should therefore include a reference-retrieval rehearsal. Use the same bound materials you intend to bring, identify high-value sections before test day, and practice finding definitions, models, formulas, or process steps without turning every question into a long lookup.

The objective is not to carry the most pages. It is to make a small, permitted set of bound references navigable. Build familiarity while learning: when a practice question exposes a gap, record the authoritative topic location in your bound material and revisit the underlying concept. That approach keeps the book as a confirmation tool rather than a replacement for judgment.

Certification maintenance

After certification, CMQ/OE recertification occurs every three years and requires 18 recertification units (RUs). Include this requirement in your decision to pursue the credential. Certification is not only an exam event; it has a recurring maintenance cycle with a stated RU requirement.

Use this brief checklist before committing to an exam appointment:

1. Confirm whether you will take CBT at Prometric or a paper-and-pencil offering.
2. Match your study outline to the BoK effective July 1, 2026.
