Environment as a theme, not scenery

United States History II lists the role of the environment among themes that cut across chronology. Independent OpenExamPrep teaching for 1865–1900 treats environment as cause and consequence. New technologies let corporations and settlers take more timber, ore, grass, and water; that taking damaged farms, fisheries, and Native subsistence; a minority of writers, scientists, and officials answered with national parks, forest reserves, and a split between preservation and conservation. This section stops at that awakening. The full Progressive political fight—Theodore Roosevelt’s presidential branding of conservation, Hetch Hetchy as a national party controversy, the 1905 Forest Service as a White House story—belongs in a later chapter. You still need the 1872–1898 origins, because exam stems will date Yellowstone and Muir here, not only in 1901–1917.

Telegraph, telephone, and the war of currents

Industrial growth needed information and power, not only Bessemer rails.

  • The telegraph was already a Civil War tool; a durable Atlantic cable (1866) and Western Union’s domestic concentration made railroad dispatching and commodity prices move at electrical speed.
  • Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone in 1876. Urban firms adopted it faster than farms; it thickened the corporate information web.
  • Thomas Edison commercialized practical incandescent lighting and opened the Pearl Street generating station in New York in 1882. Pearl Street used direct current (DC), which worked over short urban distances but lost voltage quickly.
  • George Westinghouse, transformers, and inventors including Nikola Tesla backed alternating current (AC), which can be stepped up for long-distance transmission and stepped down for use. The War of Currents (1880s–1890s) mixed engineering with publicity: Edison associated AC with danger; Westinghouse sold AC’s range. AC became the more practical grid standard because a regional power system cannot be a few city blocks of DC.

Electrification was still uneven in 1900—many mills ran on steam, and most farms stayed dark—but the science and technology theme includes this cluster: telegraph + telephone + the AC/DC choice as infrastructure for the Second Industrial Revolution.

Mechanized farming and soil exhaustion

The same rails that moved longhorns moved bonanza wheat. Steel plows, reapers and binders, threshers, and, on large Dakota and California operations, steam traction raised output per labor hour. Mechanization also lowered prices, which is why farmers could harvest more and still go broke (the political revolt is Populism, nearby). It rewarded monoculture and the breaking of shortgrass sod that held the Plains together only while the root mat remained. Soil exhaustion in older eastern and southern districts had already pushed people west; on the Plains, drought in the 1880s–1890s exposed the slogan “rain follows the plow” as marketing. The 1930s Dust Bowl is a later catastrophe, but the logic—specialize, plow, hope the climate cooperates—starts in this period. Pair this with Section 2.1’s 160-acre problem west of the 100th meridian: technology could put more land into production than rainfall could sustain.

Overgrazing on the open range (before barbed wire finished the job) and timber cutting for mine shafts and railroad ties are the livestock and forest versions of the same extractive pattern.

Timber, hard-rock, and hydraulic mining

Great Lakes pine, then southern and western stands, fed construction and railroads. Mining was not only Comstock underground industrialism. Hydraulic mining in California’s Sierra foothills used high-pressure water cannons to blast gold-bearing gravels. Debris known as slickens choked rivers, buried Central Valley farms, and raised flood stages. In Woodruff v. North Bloomfield Gravel Mining Co., federal judge Lorenzo Sawyer issued an 1884 injunction that effectively curbed large-scale hydraulic mining. Remember the pairing for environment items: western mineral wealth versus downstream agriculture. Hard-rock mining’s timber demand and cyanide/mercury processing add a chemical and forest cost even when the water cannon is not the method.

Yellowstone, forest reserves, Muir, and Pinchot

Yellowstone National Park (1 March 1872) is the landmark statute: Congress reserved a huge landscape in the Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho Territories from ordinary private entry “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” It is the first national park in the modern U.S. sense. Yosemite had earlier (1864) state-park status and became a national park in 1890. The Forest Reserve Act of 1891 authorized presidents to set aside forest reserves from the public domain—the legal root of the national-forest system. John Wesley Powell’s Report on the Lands of the Arid Region (1878) had already warned that western water, not 160-acre fantasy, should organize settlement; his institutional follow-through is partial in this period, but the environmental diagnosis is on the table.

Pinchot’s 1905 U.S. Forest Service and the later Hetch Hetchy dam fight are next-chapter politics. What you need here is that preservation versus conservation is already a late-nineteenth-century argument, not an invention of 1901. Muir’s Sierra Club (1892) and Pinchot’s 1898 forestry office are the dated hooks.

How to use the official environment theme

If a passage mentions Yellowstone, barbed-wire overgrazing, hydraulic slickens, Muir on Yosemite, or Powell on aridity, the item is often testing the role of the environment in United States history. Expansion (2.1) created a continental extractive economy; Native dispossession (2.2) cleared title; corporations (2.3) scaled the taking; technology in this section multiplied what humans could remove—and, by 1872–1891, what a few statutes and writers tried to withhold from the market. That is a complete 1865–1900 story. Do not steal the later Progressive chapter’s presidential narrative to finish the sentence; do not ignore environment as if it were only landscape description.
