Spill protection is a safety requirement in many states, so be familiar with the laws in the states you drive through — coverage requirements for gravel, debris, and loose materials vary widely and are enforced at the state level.

The operational discipline is short and specific: look at your cargo covers in the mirrors from time to time while driving. A flapping cover can tear loose, uncovering the cargo and possibly blocking your view or someone else's. A tarp that starts to lift is a defect that gets worse every mile, and it becomes a debris hazard for every vehicle behind you.

5. Sealed and Containerized Loads

Containerized loads are generally used when freight travels part of the way by rail or ship, with delivery by truck at the beginning and/or the end of the journey.
