2. Step 2 — The Engine Compartment Check

The engine compartment adds exactly one air brake item, and it applies only to some vehicles.

A candidate who says "check the compressor drive belt" on a gear-driven tractor is describing a part that does not exist. Gear-driven compressors mesh directly with the engine gear train and have no belt to tension — one reason they dominate heavy Class 8 specifications.

If the compressor has its own oil supply rather than being lubricated by engine oil, check that oil level before driving as part of the same engine compartment sweep.


3. Step 5 — The Walk-around Inspection

Step 5 is where nearly all of the mechanical air brake inspection happens. Two item groups are added:

  1. Check slack adjusters on S-cam brakes. Park on level ground and chock the wheels to keep the vehicle from moving. Release the parking brakes so the slack adjusters can move. Wearing gloves, pull hard on each slack adjuster you can reach. If a slack adjuster moves more than about one inch where the push rod attaches to it, it probably needs adjustment. Out-of-adjustment brakes are the most common problem found in roadside inspections.
  2. Check brake drums (or discs), linings, and hoses. Drums or discs must not have cracks longer than one half the width of the friction area. Linings must not be loose, soaked with oil or grease, or dangerously thin. Mechanical parts must be in place and neither broken nor missing. Check the air hoses connected to the brake chambers to be sure they are not cut or worn from rubbing.

Automatic slack adjusters still get checked. All vehicles built since 1994 have automatic slack adjusters. They adjust themselves during full brake applications, but they must still be inspected. When an automatic adjuster lets pushrod stroke exceed the legal limit, that is evidence of a mechanical problem in the adjuster, the related foundation brake components, or the installation — not an invitation to reach for a wrench. Manually adjusting an automatic adjuster generally masks the problem rather than fixing it, and gives a false sense of security about the braking system.


4. Step 7 — The Final Air Brake Check

This is the step candidates most often get wrong conceptually. On an air-brake vehicle you do not perform the Section 2 hydraulic brake check and then add air brake tests. You perform the air brake checks instead of the hydraulic brake check.

Two habits make the whole inspection safer. Chock the wheels before you release the parking brakes for any test — you will be releasing them for the slack adjuster check and again for the static leak test.
