Current CNAMB Exam Facts, Eligibility & Blueprint

Blueprint rule: Prepare from the handbook and task statements that apply to the date of your examination. CCI has announced a redesigned examination for 2027, but candidates testing under the current handbook should use the current nine-domain blueprint below.

Credential Identity and Current Test Format

The Certified Ambulatory Surgery Nurse (CNAMB) credential is administered by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI) for registered nurses practicing across the ambulatory perioperative continuum. The current examination is a computer-delivered multiple-choice test available through authorized test centers and remote proctoring, subject to CCI scheduling and technology requirements.

The current form contains 200 questions. Of these, 185 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest questions used to evaluate possible future items. Pretest questions are interspersed throughout the examination and are not labeled. Because a candidate cannot tell which questions count, every item deserves the same careful response. The testing appointment provides 3 hours 45 minutes, which averages about 67 seconds per item if all 200 questions are considered. Use that average as a pacing signal, not a rigid limit: answer straightforward items efficiently, mark uncertain items if the testing interface permits, and preserve time for review.

CCI reports performance on a scaled-score range from 200 to 800, and the current passing scaled score is 620. Scaling allows different examination forms to be equated for difficulty. A score of 620 therefore does not mean 62% correct, and no reliable raw-percentage pass target can be inferred from the scaled number. Preparation should emphasize consistent mastery across the blueprint rather than attempts to reverse-engineer an unpublished raw cut score.

Current Eligibility Routes

All applicants must satisfy the credential’s common requirements, including a current, unrestricted RN license, the required nursing education, and current employment in an ambulatory surgery setting. CCI then recognizes experience routes described in the current handbook:

1. Standard RN experience route: At least two years and 2,400 hours of eligible ambulatory surgery experience, including at least 500 intraoperative hours.
2. Alternative qualifying background route: Applicants with a qualifying CFPN, CST, TS-C, or specified military surgical-technology background may use the published alternative route of at least 18 months and 2,400 hours of eligible experience, subject to all current handbook conditions.

Do not estimate eligibility from a job title alone. Document dates, hours, setting, and intraoperative experience, and use CCI’s application definitions. The application fee is $400 under the current handbook. Once approved, the eligibility period is 12 months, the first examination attempt must be scheduled within 90 days, and failed attempts require at least 30 days before retesting. The current retake fee is $175. Fees and administrative rules can change, so confirm them in the handbook before applying.

Current Nine-Domain Blueprint

The item counts are the direct percentages of a 200-item form and are useful for planning, but the scored/pretest distinction means they should not be treated as a promise about the exact scored-item count in each domain. Intraoperative Care is the largest domain, yet the other eight domains together represent 80% of the examination. A sound plan cycles through all domains, adds extra retrieval practice for weaker areas, and regularly mixes topics so that cues do not come from chapter order.

Transition Announced for 2027

CCI’s job-task-analysis notice describes a revised CNAMB examination planned for 2027. The announced future form retains 200 total items and 3 hours 45 minutes but reorganizes content into eight areas and describes 175 scored plus 25 unscored items. Those are future specifications, not current-exam facts. Until CCI publishes and applies a definitive implementation schedule to a candidate’s testing window, use the current handbook tied to the appointment. Exam-Day Decision Strategy

Read the final sentence of a scenario first to identify the decision being tested, then return to the stem for decisive cues. Prefer actions that protect the patient immediately, preserve assessment before intervention when the patient is stable, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use, and escalate beyond an ASC’s capability early. When two options sound plausible, distinguish a universal regulatory requirement from a facility policy, and distinguish a nurse’s independent action from an action requiring an order or provider decision. Never let one difficult item consume the time needed to answer several accessible ones.
