Can You Take the CBEST Exam?

Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements

Age
No minimum age requirement for the test itself
Education
You may take the CBEST only if you hold at least a high school diploma, a GED, or the equivalent, or if you are or have been a student taking courses for college credit toward a career in education
Additional Requirements
  • CTC Leaflet CL-667 lists nine options for meeting California's basic skills requirement, of which the CBEST is one
  • SB 153 (Chapter 38, Statutes of 2024), effective June 29, 2024, allows a bachelor's or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution to meet the requirement
  • AB 130 (Chapter 44, Statutes of 2021) allows degree-applicable coursework passed with a grade of B or better to meet the requirement
  • Other options include CSET: Multiple Subjects plus Writing Skills (#142), qualifying SAT, ACT, or AP scores, CSU EAP/EPT/ELM scores, and an accepted out-of-state basic skills exam
  • CBEST passing scores remain valid indefinitely for credential and employment purposes
