Build passage analysis, inference, and critical evaluation skills for the 50 Reading questions split about 40% critical analysis and 60% comprehension and research.
Strengthen Mathematics Fundamentals
Drill estimation, computation, word problems, statistics, and graph interpretation entirely without a calculator, since calculators are prohibited on CBEST.
Practice Essay Writing
Write timed essays for both the remembered-experience prompt and the expository analysis prompt, targeting rhetorical force, organization, support, usage, and conventions.
Run Section-Length Timed Practice
Rehearse each section at its real limit: 90 minutes for Reading, 120 minutes for Mathematics, and 90 minutes for the two essays.
Can You Take the CBEST Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •CTC Leaflet CL-667 lists nine options for meeting California's basic skills requirement, of which the CBEST is one
- •SB 153 (Chapter 38, Statutes of 2024), effective June 29, 2024, allows a bachelor's or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution to meet the requirement
- •AB 130 (Chapter 44, Statutes of 2021) allows degree-applicable coursework passed with a grade of B or better to meet the requirement
- •Other options include CSET: Multiple Subjects plus Writing Skills (#142), qualifying SAT, ACT, or AP scores, CSU EAP/EPT/ELM scores, and an accepted out-of-state basic skills exam
- •CBEST passing scores remain valid indefinitely for credential and employment purposes
