When stuck, map the scenario to Core Functions:

Screening → Intake → Orientation → Assessment → Treatment planning → Counseling → Case management → Crisis intervention → Client education → Referral → Reports/record keeping → Consultation

If the stem says "first session after admission," orientation (rules, rights, process) may beat deep psychodynamic interpretation. If discharge is imminent, continuing care beats starting new exploratory therapy.

Case Question Method (Step-by-Step)

1. Identify the client stage — crisis, early engagement, stable recovery, relapse?
2. Spot the legal/ethical flag — confidentiality limit, mandated report, duty to protect?
3. Eliminate extremes — "guarantee abstinence," "ignore all confidentiality," "discharge without plan"
4. Choose collaborative, evidence-aligned action — MI spirit, person-first language, warm handoff
5. Prefer scope-appropriate steps — CASAC counselors do not prescribe; they refer, educate, document

Domain 5 Trap Patterns

Time Management

Budget roughly 72 seconds per question (3 hours ÷ 150). Vignettes may run long — read the actual question last so you know what detail matters. Flag uncertain items; never leave blanks — no penalty for guessing on typical scored exams.

Practice Integration

Use this site's CASAC practice questions by category, but write your own case endings: "What note section is this?" "What belongs in discharge summary?" "What psychoeducation topic fits precontemplation?" Explaining why an answer wins builds faster recall than memorizing letters.

Final Domain 5 Checklist

Before test day, confirm you can:

• Define psychoeducation and contrast psychoeducational vs. process groups
• Build SOAP and discharge summary content from a short scenario
• Draft continuing care and relapse prevention elements
• Explain tolerance, withdrawal, disease model, and MOUD basics in plain language
• Apply Core Functions and ethics when education or documentation intersects crisis

Answering "First" vs. "Best" Action

Vignettes often ask for the most immediate counselor response:

• Safety first — overdose, suicide, credible threat to others, intoxication in unsafe setting
• Then stabilization — detox referral, crisis plan, de-escalation
• Then clinical work — assessment depth, interpretation, long-term therapy

If a client is nodding off in group with pinpoint pupils, naloxone and 911 precede exploring childhood trauma.

Educated Guessing When Two Answers Seem Right

Choose the answer that is:

• Within CASAC scope (no prescribing, diagnosing beyond role, or legal advice)
• Least authoritarian unless safety requires firm action
• Most collaborative with client self-determination
• Most documented when documentation is an option

When one choice says "educate the family about enabling" and another says "tell the family everything the client said," education with confidentiality respect usually wins.

Arrive early with acceptable ID. Use the tutorial time to settle nerves. If a question references IC&RC or OASAS, default to standard professional practice in the United States — not idiosyncratic agency shortcuts unless the stem specifies them. Flag and return to long vignettes; maintain pace so every scored item receives an answer.

Connecting to Prior Chapters

Domain 5 questions assume you already know MI (OARS), 42 CFR Part 2, ASAM levels, and CBT basics. A continuing-care item may punish you for choosing inpatient readmission when IOP intensification meets medical necessity. Cross-domain integration is the exam's design — not an accident.

Passing CASAC means demonstrating competent counselor judgment under time pressure — the same judgment that keeps clients safe, records defensible, and recovery supported long after discharge.
