Filters, oils, coolants and hydraulic fluids move more units across a parts counter than any other category, and they generate a disproportionate share of comebacks. Under C-9.02 Identifies parts application, the exam expects a parts technician to match a fluid or filter to a machine using manufacturers' part numbers, specifications and dimensions — not by colour, not by "it looks like the old one," and not by price point.


Reading Engine Oil: SAE Viscosity Grades

Engine oil viscosity grades are defined by SAE J300. A multigrade label such as 5W-30 carries two independent pieces of information:

  • The number before the W ("winter") describes low-temperature performance: cold-cranking viscosity and low-temperature pumpability. 5W flows better at low temperature than 15W.
  • The number after the W describes viscosity at 100 °C operating temperature. A 30 grade is thinner at operating temperature than a 40 grade.

Red Seal Exam Trap: A customer who says "5W-30 is too thin for my truck, give me 15W-40" is making two claims, only one of which is meaningful. The 15W is worse in cold weather, and the 40 is thicker when hot. The counter answer is not to debate it but to supply what the manufacturer specifies for that engine and that ambient temperature range, because a modern engine with variable valve timing and tight bearing clearances can suffer real damage from an out-of-specification grade.

Additional grade facts that appear on the exam:

  • Monograde oils (SAE 30, SAE 40) have no winter rating and are still used in some small engines, older equipment, and specific hydraulic and gear applications.
  • Gear oils use a different SAE scale entirely (SAE J306: 75W-90, 80W-90, 85W-140). SAE 80W-90 gear oil is not thicker than SAE 40 engine oil in the way the numbers suggest — the two scales are not comparable, and confusing them is a classic error.
  • Synthetic versus conventional is a base-oil question, separate from the viscosity grade.

For heavy-duty diesel, the two current categories are the ones a truck parts counter must not confuse:

  • CK-4 — backward compatible with earlier diesel categories, available in conventional heavy-duty grades such as 15W-40.
  • FA-4 — lower high-temperature high-shear viscosity for fuel economy in specific newer engines. FA-4 is not backward compatible and must only be supplied where the engine manufacturer specifies it.

Supplying FA-4 into an engine that requires CK-4 is a genuine warranty and durability exposure, and it is exactly the kind of application-matching question the standard's Task 9 tests.


Coolant: Chemistry, Not Colour

Engine coolant is the category where counter intuition fails most often, because the industry has trained customers to shop by colour and the colour means nothing.

Two rules follow:

  1. Dye colour is not a specification. Green, orange, pink, yellow and blue are marketing decisions made independently by each manufacturer. Two orange coolants can be entirely different chemistries.
  2. Match the OEM specification printed in the owner's or service manual, and where a heavy-duty diesel requires supplemental coolant additive (SCA) or a nitrited coolant for liner protection, that requirement is not optional.

Mixing incompatible chemistries can drop inhibitors out of solution, produce gelling, and leave a cooling system with no corrosion protection at all.


Transmission, Brake and Hydraulic Fluids

These are specification-matched categories. Viscosity alone tells you almost nothing.

  • Automatic transmission fluid is defined by OEM specification (for example a manufacturer's licensed ATF specification), because the friction modifier package controls clutch and torque-converter engagement behaviour. A fluid with the right viscosity and the wrong friction characteristics produces converter shudder or clutch glazing.
  • Brake fluid is classified by DOT grade against boiling point and viscosity requirements. Glycol-based DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are hygroscopic and broadly miscible with one another; DOT 5 is silicone-based and must never be mixed with glycol fluids. Supplying DOT 5 into a system designed for DOT 3 or DOT 4 is a safety failure.
  • Hydraulic fluid is matched to the pump and system requirement — ISO viscosity grade plus the machine manufacturer's specification, including anti-wear and fire-resistant categories. Agricultural and construction equipment frequently specifies a combined hydraulic/transmission (UTTO or STOU) fluid that also lubricates wet brakes; substituting a plain anti-wear hydraulic oil into a wet-brake system produces brake chatter.

Red Seal Exam Focus: The pattern across all three is identical. The question is never "which is thicker." It is always "which specification does this machine require, and does the product on the shelf carry that specification on its label?"


Identifying Filters

Filters are identified by physical dimensions plus internal valving, and interchange guides list both. For a spin-on oil filter:

Air, fuel, cabin and hydraulic filters follow the same principle with different dimensions: outside diameter, inside diameter, overall length, end-cap style (open, closed, flanged), and micron rating.
