Introduction: CSEP-CPT Theory Exam Facts & Certification Pathway

Key Takeaways

  • CSEP-CPT applicants need at least the equivalent of two years of full-time post-secondary study (60 credits) in a related field such as kinesiology, human kinetics, physical education, fitness and health promotion, or exercise science.

  • The CSEP-CPT Theory Exam is delivered by Pearson VUE at test centres or by online proctoring, and candidates need 70% or higher to pass.

  • CSEP's 2024 certification webinar describes the CSEP-CPT Theory Exam as 60 multiple-choice questions in a 2-hour sitting covering the six core competencies.

  • As of February 2026, CSEP lists a $50 application fee and a $175 CSEP-CPT Theory Exam fee, before tax, with no refunds.

CSEP-CPT Theory Exam Facts & Certification Pathway

The CSEP Certified Personal Trainer® (CSEP-CPT) is awarded by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP). A CSEP-CPT works with apparently healthy individuals and with individuals who have a stable health condition and can exercise independently, using the CSEP-PATH® client-centred process. This guide is an independent study resource by OpenExamPrep. CSEP states that only CSEP provides its own approved study and exam-preparation materials. Use CSEP's resources alongside this guide, and check csep.ca for changes before you book.

Eligibility (CSEP-CPT Application Requirements, February 2026)

Applicants must show at least the equivalent of two years of full-time study (60 credits) at the post-secondary level in a related field, through one of these routes:

  • graduation from an appropriate two-year college diploma program;
  • university or college coursework toward graduation in an appropriate program; or
  • a completed CEGEP DEC in the Pre-University Science stream plus courses in an appropriate bachelor's degree, with at least one year (30 credits) from the university system.

Appropriate programs include human kinetics, kinesiology, physical education, fitness and health promotion, and exercise science. CSEP's Recommended Course Maps show which courses at participating institutions cover the core competencies.

The Five Steps to Certification

  1. Get Ready: review the requirements and buy the required CSEP-PATH® Resource Manual (Third Edition). Its unique code is needed to purchase the Theory Exam.
  2. Apply: submit the online application with a transcript and pay the $50 application fee. CSEP's FAQ says approval takes about 2 to 3 weeks.
  3. Prepare for Exams: CSEP recommends a Practical Skills Review Session, the CSEP-CPT Certification and Study Guide (3rd edition, with 50 practice questions) and the CSEP-CPT candidate modules.
  4. Exams: pass the Theory Exam and the Practical Exam, in either order. From the date you pass your first exam you have six months to pass the second and register.
  5. Register: submit proof of emergency first aid and a current CPR Level C (in person with a practical component, from an ILCOR-standard provider), and pay the membership fee. Registration includes CSEP professional liability insurance.

Important

CPR and first aid are not needed to apply, attend a skills review or sit the exams. They are required when you register after passing both exams. CSEP advises not starting the six-month clock with the theory exam until you know when a practical exam will be available in your area.

Attempts and Retakes

  • Within the certification period a candidate has a maximum of two attempts at each of the Theory and Practical Exams.
  • After a second unsuccessful attempt, the candidate may apply for an extension to get a third attempt.
  • If the third attempt is also unsuccessful, a six-month waiting period applies.
  • There is no fixed wait between attempts, but CSEP recommends at least a month of further study.

What the Theory Exam Tests: Six Core Competencies

CSEP's CSEP-CPT Core Competencies document (2024) lists six competencies and 106 sub-competencies. CSEP does not publish percentage weights, so use the sub-competency counts as a rough guide to breadth.

Core competencySub-competenciesWhere this guide teaches it
1. Basic Human Anatomy, Human Physiology and Exercise Physiology19Chapters 1 and 2
2. Psychological Characteristics and Motivational Strategies (theory and methods of behaviour modification)21Chapter 10; Section 3.5
3. Health-Related Physical Fitness Assessment (CSEP-PATH protocols, screening, measurement quality)27Chapters 3 to 6
4. Physical Activity/Exercise Prescription and Program Design25Chapters 7 and 8; Section 6.5
5. Safety and Emergency Procedures9Chapter 9; Sections 8.5 and 11.4
6. Documentation, Administration and Professionalism5Chapter 11

Study tips:

  • The exam is built on the CSEP-PATH manual: its 6-A process, screening tools, protocols, equations and Health Benefit Ratings.
  • Master the scope of practice. Many questions test whether a client or action is within CSEP-CPT limits: submaximal only, no maximal 1-RM, no loads above 90% of predicted 1-RM, no ECG, and one stable condition at most.
  • Practise the calculations: mCAFT VO2max, heart rate ceilings with the Tanaka equation, heart rate reserve, METs and kcal, Sayers power, the Rockport, Ebbeling and YMCA equations, and predicted 1-RM.

After Certification

CSEP-CPTs renew every year by March 31. They document CPR Level C or equivalent that is no more than a year old, and collect 20 Professional Development Credits every two years (by March 31 of even-numbered years). Section 11.4 has the details.
