Nail technicians must accurately identify healthy nail tissue, perform services on non-infectious cosmetic disorders, and strictly refuse service on infectious nail diseases.


Anatomy of the Natural Nail Unit

The technical term for the natural nail is onyx. It is an appendage of the skin composed primarily of translucent hard keratin (fibrous protein). A healthy natural nail is firm, flexible, shiny, and slightly pinkish in color. Water content ranges between 15% and 25%, which directly affects nail flexibility.

The 9 Basic Structures of the Natural Nail

  1. Nail Plate: The hard, translucent keratin plate that covers and protects the nail bed. It is constructed of approximately 100 layers of dead matrix cells and contains no nerves or blood vessels.
  2. Nail Bed: The portion of living skin that supports the nail plate as it grows toward the free edge. Richly supplied with blood vessels and nerve endings. Attached to the nail plate by a thin layer of tissue called the bed epithelium.
  3. Matrix: The active growth region located beneath the eponychium at the base of the nail plate. Contains blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves that produce new nail plate cells. Matrix health determines nail plate thickness, width, and curvature.
  4. Cuticle: Dead, colorless tissue attached directly to the natural nail plate. Originates from the underside of the eponychium and creates a tight seal to prevent moisture and pathogens from invading the matrix.
  5. Eponychium: Living skin tissue at the base of the natural nail plate covering the matrix area. Mandatory Rule: Cosmetologists must NEVER trim or cut the living eponychium tissue during a manicure!
