  6. Control access — Keep exits clear, prevent re-entry, and hold a perimeter so firefighters can deploy without interference.
  7. Meet and brief responders — Direct the fire department to the fire's location, report anyone unaccounted for, and identify hazards (stored chemicals, fuel, electrical panels).

Fighting a fire is acceptable only when it is small, contained, in its first moments, and you have a clear escape route and the correct extinguisher. If the fire is spreading, producing heavy smoke, or blocking your exit — evacuate. No property is worth your life.

Site Knowledge You Must Have Before a Fire

During an emergency is the wrong time to learn where things are. Before your shift, you should know:

  • The location of every fire alarm pull station on your patrol route
  • All exits, including secondary and emergency exits, and whether they are locked, alarmed, or obstructed
  • The designated assembly points where occupants gather after evacuation
  • The locations and classes of all fire extinguishers on site
  • The location of fire department connections (FDC), standpipes, and sprinkler shutoff valves
  • Any site-specific hazards — flammable storage, chemical rooms, gas shutoffs, electrical rooms
  • The site's emergency response plan and your specific duties within it
