1.1 BCSP CIT Credential Scope, Exam Logistics & Recertification
Key Takeaways
CIT eligibility requires at least 135 hours of SH&E teaching, training or instructional development; BCSP lists no degree prerequisite.
BCSP lists a two-hour CIT exam, a discounted application-plus-exam price of $426 and a $145 annual renewal fee.
CIT five-year recertification requires 20 points, including 2.8 instructional-technique points and applicable ethics points.
CIT scope and eligibility
The Certified Instructional Trainer (CIT) is awarded by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). Its focus is the work of planning, developing, delivering and evaluating safety, health and environmental instruction. OpenExamPrep is an independent preparation resource and is not affiliated with or endorsed by BCSP. This guide teaches instructional judgment; it does not authorize a reader to operate equipment, conduct rescues or replace a workplace's approved procedures.
Eligibility requires at least 135 hours of teaching, training or instructional development in safety, health or environmental subjects. BCSP lists no degree prerequisite for CIT. Before applying, organize evidence of the instructional work actually performed: subject, dates, role and hours. Do not equate an entire employment period with qualifying instructional hours. A supervisor who also trains employees should distinguish training work from ordinary supervision. BCSP determines whether an application satisfies its requirements; an employer's course certificate alone does not establish CIT eligibility.
Technical expertise and teaching expertise serve different purposes. An experienced worker might identify a hazard accurately but still need help writing measurable objectives, coaching a novice or evaluating a course. A strong facilitator might need a subject matter expert to validate technical content. Recognizing these boundaries is itself an important professional practice. When a question concerns equipment-specific or regulatory details outside the trainer's competence, consult the appropriate qualified person and current authoritative source.
Examination and current fees
BCSP's current credential information lists a two-hour examination, delivered by computer at Pearson VUE testing centers. Follow the current authorization and appointment instructions for identification, permitted aids, accommodations and security procedures. The official sources reviewed for this guide do not publish a CIT item count or a numeric passing score. Do not build a pacing plan around an assumed 100 questions or treat a practice-bank percentage as the official cut score.
| Purchase or maintenance item | Published amount as checked October 10, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Application | $140 |
| Single examination | $300 |
| Discounted application plus examination | $426 |
| Exam bundle purchased separately | $500 |
| Discounted application plus exam bundle | $626 |
| Annual renewal | $145 |
The separate application and single-exam prices sum to $440; that is different from the discounted combined purchase. The bundle includes two attempts and a self-assessment, subject to BCSP's bundle terms. Budget using the purchase selected, rather than adding every row. Fees can change, and optional preparation products are not prerequisites for certification.
BCSP gives approved candidates a one-year eligibility period to purchase, schedule and sit for the examination. Its current CIT page states a minimum six-week interval between attempts and no fixed attempt limit within eligibility. It also describes a one-time eligibility extension, requested within the specified window and charged separately. Confirm individual deadlines in the candidate account before scheduling. A retake waiting period does not extend an expiring eligibility period by itself.
BCSP states that official examination results are available immediately after testing. Its exam-development page describes expert involvement in setting a passing standard; this guide does not attribute a particular named standard-setting method to CIT without an official statement. Historical aggregate exam statistics, where published in annual reports, describe a particular reporting period and population. They do not predict an individual's probability of passing or establish a current first-attempt pass rate.
Reading the official blueprint
The current published CIT2 blueprint, version May 1, 2024, contains seven domains. Use it as a study checklist and check BCSP for a replacement before an appointment.
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Communication and facilitation | 18.6% |
| Needs assessment | 13.8% |
| Training design | 14.4% |
| Training development | 15.6% |
| Training implementation | 15.7% |
| Training assessment | 11.9% |
| Training evaluation | 10.0% |
These weights total 100%. They describe relative emphasis, not guaranteed item counts on a particular form. Allocate study time across all domains and adjust for observed weaknesses. An experienced presenter may need substantial work on assessment validity; a designer may need to practice delivery and conflict-resolution decisions.
Study each topic through a decision sequence: identify the performance need, determine the evidence available, choose an appropriate instructional or noninstructional response, and specify how success will be checked. Practice explaining why a distractor fails. If a scenario asks how to verify a physical skill, a satisfaction survey is not sufficient evidence. If the problem is missing equipment rather than knowledge, another lecture alone will not repair it.
Maintaining the credential
CIT recertification requires 20 points over five years, including 2.8 points in teaching, developing or attending courses on instructional techniques. The current BCSP overview also lists 0.5 ethics points for cycles starting on or after July 1, 2023. Annual renewal and five-year recertification are separate obligations. Do not describe the $145 annual renewal as a fee paid only once every five years.
Keep contemporaneous evidence and use the current recertification guide for activity eligibility, point calculations, limits and reporting procedures. Required activity minimums are part of the total rather than additional to it; do not assume categories can never overlap. Contact BCSP about exceptions, extensions or reinstatement instead of assuming every lapse automatically requires a new examination.
A useful preparation record includes the blueprint topic, the source studied, a scenario attempted, the error made and the planned revisit date. This separates actual learning needs from the feeling of familiarity after rereading. Preparation schedules are personal planning estimates, not sponsor promises about how long candidates need.
