9.1 Map Business Processes to Foundry Tools

Key Takeaways

  • Map Foundry Tools when Copilot cannot be the engine: vision at scale, a custom search index, a chosen catalog model, document intelligence, speech or language APIs, and agent platforms.
  • Inspect photos maps to Azure Vision in Foundry Tools; search a knowledge base maps to Azure AI Search; pick a model maps to Microsoft Foundry.
  • AB-731 candidates are business decision-makers who name the process and the first-fit service; Microsoft's audience profile says they are not expected to write any code.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot remains first-fit for draft, recap, inbox triage, spreadsheet analysis, slides, and question-and-answer over files the signed-in person can already open.
  • Current Learn pages may still show Azure AI Foundry or Azure AI Services; teach Microsoft Foundry and Foundry Tools as the July 22, 2026 blueprint names.

9.1 Map Business Processes to Foundry Tools

Quick Answer: Put Foundry Tools and Microsoft Foundry on processes Copilot cannot be the engine for: vision at scale, a custom search index, a chosen catalog model, document intelligence, speech or language APIs, and agent platforms. Inspect photos maps to Azure Vision in Foundry Tools. Search a knowledge base maps to Azure AI Search. Pick a model maps to Microsoft Foundry.

Microsoft's July 22, 2026 skills list for Exam AB-731: AI Transformation Leader asks you to map business processes and use cases to Foundry Tools. You do this as a business decision-maker. Microsoft's audience profile says you are not expected to write any code. You name the process, the outcome, and the first-fit Microsoft AI family.

Foundry Tools are Microsoft's prebuilt, API-shaped AI services: vision, speech, language, document intelligence, search, content safety, and related capabilities. Microsoft Foundry is the platform where leaders compare models, host agents, and govern those tools under one Azure resource. Older Learn pages still say Azure AI Services, Azure Cognitive Services, or Azure AI Foundry. Teach the blueprint names, then reopen current Foundry docs before you promise a SKU.

Start with the process, not the portal

Sit with the process owner. Write the verb on a whiteboard before anyone opens Microsoft Foundry.

  1. What artifact must exist by Friday: a tagged photo, a cited answer from a private corpus, a chosen model, extracted invoice fields, a transcript, or an agent that takes an action?
  2. Where does the source already live: cameras, scanners, file shares, a data lake, call recordings, or an application database?
  3. Is the work interactive (one person waiting) or a batch pipeline (thousands of files overnight)?
  4. Who is allowed to see the source today, and which identity should the system use at runtime?
  5. Does Microsoft 365 Copilot already cover this as draft, recap, triage, spreadsheet analysis, slides, or question-and-answer over files the user can already open?

If the answer to question 5 is yes, stop. That mapping belongs with Copilot. Foundry Tools are the first-fit when Copilot would be a memo about the pipeline rather than the pipeline.

When Foundry Tools beat Copilot

Copilot is the productivity assistant for work that already happens in Microsoft 365. Foundry Tools are the services you call when the business needs a purpose-built AI capability at Azure scale. Microsoft's Foundry documentation describes an AI app and agent factory: models, tools, and agents under one management grouping. That is a different job from recapping a Teams standup.

Business verbFirst-fit familyWhy Copilot is not the engineTypical owner
Vision at scaleAzure Vision in Foundry ToolsPhotos and frames must be classified, counted, or tagged every minuteOperations, digital asset management
Search a knowledge baseAzure AI SearchAnswers must come from a custom index or knowledge base you controlKnowledge, legal, support
Pick a modelMicrosoft FoundryYou must compare, evaluate, and deploy a specific foundation modelProduct, architecture
Document intelligenceDocument Intelligence in Foundry ToolsFields must be extracted from high volumes of forms into a system of recordFinance, claims, HR operations
Speech or language APIsSpeech and Language in Foundry ToolsAudio must become text, or text must be classified, translated, or redacted as a serviceContact center, localization
Agent platformsMicrosoft Foundry Agent ServiceA custom agent must use tools, memory, and your models under Azure identityDigital, operations

Keep that table on exam day. If a stem names inspect, index, catalog, extract at volume, transcribe, or host an agent, do not answer Copilot.

Three leader mappings the exam wants you to say out loud

Inspect photos. A plant's cameras capture carton damage. The operations vice president needs a count in the warehouse system, not a paragraph in Teams. Map to Azure Vision in Foundry Tools (and, when faces or badges are in scope, Face). Copilot can still draft the standard operating procedure. It does not replace a vision endpoint on the floor. Microsoft's Vision overview frames this as algorithms that process images and return visual features, including digital asset management: group images by logos, objects, or colors; generate captions; attach keywords so media is searchable.

Search a knowledge base. Legal has 12 years of PDFs that never lived in Microsoft 365 as Graph-permissioned files. Staff need cited answers from that corpus. Map to Azure AI Search: build or point at an index or knowledge base, then let a Foundry agent or app retrieve. Work-grounded Copilot only sees what the signed-in person can already open in Microsoft 365. Microsoft's Search overview is explicit: the service connects your data to AI so agents and models can produce grounded answers over proprietary content.

Pick a model. A product vice president wants to compare two text models for a customer-facing agent on latency, cost, and data residency before any app ships. Map to Microsoft Foundry's model catalog. Copilot does not expose that catalog under Word. Microsoft currently documents more than 10,000 models in Foundry, with filters for task, region, and deployment option. The leader's job is to choose and sponsor evaluation, not to train a foundation model from random weights.

Worked mappings by role

Chief financial officer (CFO). Closing needs invoice fields in the ledger by 6 a.m. Mapping A: Document Intelligence prebuilt invoice models into the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Mapping B: Azure AI Search so controllers can ask grounded questions over filed statements. Mapping C is a miss: asking Copilot in Excel to invent next quarter's units.

Operations vice president. Inspection photos, not recap. Mapping A: Azure Vision to tag defects. Mapping B: Speech to transcribe radio traffic on the floor. Mapping C is a miss: Copilot in Teams as the inspection engine.

Human resources (HR). Four thousand résumés must land in stages. Mapping A: Document Intelligence plus Language classification. Mapping B: Azure AI Search over the published policy set for an internal agent. Mapping C is a miss: Copilot Chat as the applicant-tracking system.

Legal. Matter files sit in a records system. Mapping A: Azure AI Search with document-level access control. Mapping B: Language personally identifiable information (PII) detection before a packet leaves the firm. Mapping C is a miss: consumer Copilot with a personal Microsoft account (MSA).

Security. The chief information security officer (CISO) wants prompts screened and models reachable only from the corporate network. Mapping A: Content Safety plus Foundry networking. Mapping B: a Foundry agent that uses Search over the approved runbook library. Mapping C is a miss: pasting unpublished vulnerability notes into a public chatbot.

How this shows up for AB-731 candidates

Expect stems that name a verb and a workplace. Match Foundry Tools when the verb is see, index, extract at volume, transcribe, classify text as a service, or host an agent. Match Microsoft Foundry when the verb is compare or deploy a model. Match Copilot when the verb is draft, recap, triage, analyze a sheet, generate a deck, or ask over permitted Microsoft 365 files. Keep a human in the loop whenever the artifact leaves the building.

Reopen current Foundry docs before you lock a design. Microsoft's Foundry overview, Foundry Tools list, Vision overview, and Azure AI Search introduction are the pages this mapping rests on. Product names moved in 2025–2026; the July 22, 2026 blueprint uses Microsoft Foundry and Foundry Tools.
