Queensland Motorcycle Knowledge Test: Format, Eligibility and Logistics

The Queensland motorcycle knowledge test is the theory assessment used before a person receives a class RE learner licence. It is administered by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). The official test page and the Queensland Motorcycle Riders’ Guide state that the test contains 30 multiple-choice questions and that a candidate must answer at least 27 correctly. That is a 90% pass mark, so the practical study target is accuracy rather than broad guessing.

What the test covers

TMR identifies two core study sources: Your Keys to Driving in Queensland and the Queensland Motorcycle Riders’ Guide. The first covers the general Queensland road rules that apply to all drivers and riders. The second adds motorcycle licensing, equipment, riding technique, roadcraft, risk management and motorcycle-specific rules. The official online practice test is useful for becoming familiar with question style, but it does not replace either guide.

The examinable scope includes ordinary give-way rules, signs, signals, speed limits and safe road use as well as motorcycle-only subjects such as learner supervision, LAMS motorcycles, approved helmets, pillion restrictions, lane and edge filtering, crash-avoidance space, braking and hazard perception. A candidate should treat exact numbers—27 out of 30, 30 km/h filtering, 20-metre L-plate visibility, three-second crash-avoidance space and the applicable licence-tenure periods—as memory items.

Eligibility for the RE learner test

To take the test for an RE learner licence, the official online service requires you to have successfully completed the Q-Ride pre-learner course, or to have obtained the relevant exemption, with that status recorded on your TMR record. You must hold a current provisional, probationary or open licence and must have held a car or higher-class licence for at least 1 year in the previous 5 years. The rule does not say the year must be a single uninterrupted period, so do not add a “continuous year” condition that TMR does not state.

The pre-learner course is delivered by a TMR-approved Q-Ride registered service provider. Current TMR information describes 34 modules delivered over a minimum of 2 days. A person living outside a 100-kilometre radius of a Q-Ride training area may apply for an exemption; accepting it changes the later learner-tenure requirement to at least 1 year.

Online and in-person attempts

Eligible candidates may use TMR’s online motorcycle knowledge test. For the online channel, the one-off test fee is charged when the candidate passes. A failed online attempt is not charged. After a pass and payment, an eligible person may be able to add RE learner authority and arrange a new licence without attending a centre.

The test is also available at a driver licence issuing centre. An in-person candidate pays the test fee for each attempt, including an unsuccessful attempt. Returning riders may be directed to the in-person process. Fees are indexed, so learn the current amount from TMR immediately before booking rather than memorising an old dollar figure. As at the guide’s review date, the official online service lists $29.70.

Both delivery methods allow one attempt per day. The official material does not say that a fourth incorrect response ends the test immediately, that there is a special appeal procedure, or that an attempted second login invalidates a result. Those details should not be invented. Concentrate on the published score requirement and the once-per-day limit.

Result validity and a reliable preparation check

A successful motorcycle knowledge-test result remains valid for 5 years. Passing the theory test is one step in the licensing path; it is not permission to ride before the RE learner authority has been added to the licence. Before starting an online attempt, confirm that the pre-learner completion or exemption appears on the TMR record, the underlying licence is current, and the candidate details match TMR’s records.

Use a final readiness check:

• identify the licence stage described in every question;
• separate general road rules from motorcycle-specific exceptions;
• notice whether a rule depends on the underlying car-licence type or the motorcycle-licence type;
• read “must,” “may,” “at least” and “more than” literally; and
• answer according to current Queensland rules, not experience from another state.

The exam’s administrative facts are straightforward: 30 questions, 27 correct to pass, one attempt a day, official Queensland source books, and a five-year result. The more demanding work is applying those sources accurately to the scenario in front of you.
