The ASWB Clinical exam follows the 2026 blueprint, based on ASWB's 2024 practice analysis and used for exams given since August 3, 2026. It is organized into three content areas, each broken into competencies (marked by letters) and applied knowledge statements. The percentage beside each area shows how much of the exam it covers; on 110 scored questions, 32% is about 36 questions.

Content Area Breakdown

I. Values and Ethics (36%) The largest area on the Clinical exam. Competencies: IA. Ethical Principles and Responsibilities, IB. Ethical Service Delivery, and IC. Diversity and Social Justice.

III. Intervention and Practice (32%) Competencies: IIIA. Practice Concepts, IIIB. Intervention Methods and Techniques, IIIC. Practice Evaluation and Research, and IIID. Supervision and Administration.

Key topics include:

  • Building the helping relationship, strengths-based and empowerment strategies, and interdisciplinary collaboration

Other Exam Categories

The Associate/Bachelors, Masters, and Advanced Generalist outlines use the same three content areas, weighted Values and Ethics 35%, Assessment and Planning 33%, and Intervention and Practice 32%. The outlines used before August 3, 2026 had four content areas, so older prep materials built on them no longer match the exam. This guide's chapters group topics by subject; on the 2026 outline, those topics are spread across the three content areas (for example, diversity and social justice now sit in Values and Ethics).
