Overview of the ASE A1 Certification

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Automobile & Light Truck Test A1: Engine Repair measures a technician's ability to diagnose, service, and repair gasoline engines used in cars, SUVs, and light-duty trucks. It is one of the core A-series credentials used in dealerships, independent shops, and fleet facilities.

A1 emphasizes diagnostic strategy as much as teardown skill. Candidates must verify concerns, research service information, isolate mechanical faults with compression, leak-down, vacuum, and scan-tool evidence, and make repair-or-replace decisions that match OEM procedures. Light-vehicle diesel engines are covered by the separate A9 credential, not A1.

Because research items are mixed into the form, you must answer every question. Average pacing is about 82 seconds per item (75 minutes ÷ 55 questions). Fees current on ASE's dates-and-fees page are a $34 registration fee per order plus $62 per general certification test (tax may apply). You have 90 days from purchase to schedule and complete testing at a Prometric center for initial A1 certification.

Domain Focus Areas

• General Engine Diagnosis (40%): Concern verification, service information research, no-crank / crank-no-start decisions, leak and noise diagnosis, oil/coolant consumption, vacuum, power balance, compression, leak-down, PCV, and instrumented diagnosis with scan tools, DMMs, and oscilloscopes.
• Cylinder Head and Valve Train (13%): Head removal and inspection, valves/seats/springs/guides/seals, pushrods and rockers, lash and lifters, cam drive components, camshaft condition, timing, VVT/VVL hardware, and head reassembly torque procedures.
• Engine Block (9%): Block inspection and machining decisions, pistons/rings/pins, crankshaft and bearings, auxiliary/balance shafts, flywheel/flexplate hardware, assembly sealing, in-block VVT, and cylinder deactivation systems.
• Lubrication and Cooling (18%): Oil pressure and leak diagnosis, oil pumps/relief valves/coolers, oil service specifications, cooling system pressure and leak tests, thermostats, water pumps, fans, belts, and coolant service.
• Fuel, Electrical, Ignition, Air Induction, and Exhaust (20%): Engine faults caused by related subsystems and the service actions needed to restore mechanical performance—not full A6/A8 specialty depth.

ASE reports A1 results as pass/fail and does not publish a fixed numeric cut score.

Deciphering ASE Question Formats: Technician A / Technician B

Many A1 items use the Technician A / Technician B format. Evaluate each statement as an independent true/false claim before choosing among A only, B only, both, or neither.

Step-by-Step Evaluation Strategy

1. Evaluate Technician A Independently: Decide whether A's assertion is completely true under the stated operating conditions and OEM practice. Any factual or procedural error makes A false.
2. Evaluate Technician B Independently: Judge B without using A's conclusion as a dependency.
3. Select the Corresponding Choice:
   • A true, B false → Technician A only
   • A false, B true → Technician B only
   • Both true → Both Technician A and B
   • Both false → Neither Technician A nor B

Common Test Traps to Avoid

• Mutual Exclusivity Trap: Both technicians can be correct when they name two valid causes or steps.
• False Premise Trap: A statement that starts true and ends with a wrong repair recommendation is false overall.
• Disregarding Test Conditions: Cold start, hot idle, loaded coast-down, and WOT conditions change which diagnosis is valid.

Certification, Experience, and Master Technician Credential

Passing A1 alone does not issue the credential until ASE approves work experience:

• Work Experience Requirement: Most ASE certifications, including A1, require two years of relevant full-time hands-on experience. Approved formal training may substitute for up to one year (half) of that requirement.
• Master Automobile Technician Status: Passing A1 through A8 plus approved experience earns ASE Master Automobile Technician status. A9 (Light Vehicle Diesel Engines) is a separate specialty and is not required for Master Auto.
• Recertification: Credentials expire after five years. Recertify with the shorter A1R form (23 questions / 30 minutes) or, when eligible, by earning credits through the ASE Renewal App.
