1.2 Eligibility, CMP, and How to Use This Guide

ASCP BOC publishes several QIHC eligibility routes. You must meet all requirements of one route, including the education, training, and/or experience that route defines. The Board states that it is your responsibility to confirm you meet the criteria, that you must submit the correct documentation with the application, and that once submitted, the category and route of application cannot be changed. This section teaches the structure of those routes so you know what to look for. It is not a substitute for the current QIHC credential page. Fees, month counts, and documentation forms can change. Use the live page for the route you will actually submit.

Education does not have to be completed in the United States. The Board publishes separate acceptable-education rules, including how foreign transcripts are evaluated. If a route requires a degree, the stated degree or a higher degree meets the academic floor.

The Common Histotechnology Route: HT or HTL Plus Six Months of IHC

A commonly used route is valid HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) certification, or the ASCPi equivalent HT or HTL, plus 6 months of full-time acceptable immunohistochemistry experience within the last 5 years. That IHC experience must be documented on the Board's immunohistochemistry experience documentation form.

"Acceptable" has a published meaning. Clinical experience must be in a laboratory the Board recognizes. The credential page's examples include a CMS CLIA certificate of registration, compliance, or accreditation; a Department of Defense CLIP certificate; Joint Commission International accreditation; or accreditation under ISO 15189. The same six-month IHC window can also be met with full-time veterinary, industry, or research immunohistochemistry performed in the United States or Canada, documented on the same style of form.

If you already hold HT or HTL and have been running IHC for years, this is usually the route to verify first. If your HT or HTL credential is not in an active CMP cycle, it may not satisfy a route that requires a valid ASCP BOC credential. Confirm that the prerequisite credential is current before you pay the $260 QIHC application fee.

Other Routes: Scientist or Specialist, MLT, and Baccalaureate

Not every IHC practitioner is HT- or HTL-certified. The live QIHC page also publishes routes that start from:

• Valid scientist or specialist certification (ASCP or ASCPi), plus documented histotechnology experience and documented IHC experience.
• Valid MLT(ASCP or ASCPi) certification, plus documented histotechnology experience and documented IHC experience.
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, plus documented histotechnology experience and documented IHC experience.

Month counts are not identical across these routes, and the longer windows belong to specific routes. The scientist or specialist route pairs 6 months of acceptable histotechnology experience with 6 months of acceptable IHC experience. The MLT route pairs 6 months of histotechnology experience with 12 months of IHC experience. The baccalaureate route is the longest: 9 months of histotechnology experience plus 15 months of IHC experience. Every one of those windows must fall within the last 5 years, and each can be met with clinical experience or with U.S./Canada veterinary, industry, or research experience on the Board's documentation form. Do not assume that the six-month HT/HTL window applies to every route, and do not attach the MLT route's 12-month figure to the baccalaureate route. This guide will not print a full unofficial route table. Third-party charts, including older society pages, have carried stale CMP fees and outdated experience windows. The ASCP BOC credential page is the source to trust for the route you will use.

What Counts as IHC Experience

Direct performance, training, and/or management/supervision of immunohistochemistry procedures are acceptable in meeting the experience requirements. You do not have to personally pipette every slide if you train or supervise the work and the documentation supports it. You also cannot count unrelated histology work and call it IHC: the IHC form is about immunohistochemistry, not about "I cut blocks in the same department."

The published IHC experience documentation asks whether you have performed:

• Selection of proper control material
• Performance of the staining technique
• Titration of immunologic reagents

It also asks whether you have participated in quality assurance related to all of the following:

• Method selection, validation, documentation, and optimization
• Reagent selection, preparation, storage, and disposal
• Safety
• Specimen fixation, processing, and microtomy
• Interpretation of normal staining patterns

If your daily work is only loading an autostainer, and you never select controls, never titrate, and never join QA review, talk with your supervisor before you apply. The form attests to a defined IHC practice, not merely to employment in a histology laboratory.

Credential Maintenance: 8 Points in 3 Years

QIHC is not a lifetime card. It is maintained through the ASCP BOC Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) on a 3-year cycle. Continuing education must be earned inside the current cycle. The published QIHC point distribution totals 8 points:

The qualification CMP application fee is $65. If the credential lapses, a reinstatement fee of $60 is paid in addition to the CMP application fee. CMP fees are non-refundable. If you hold multiple qualifications that expire on the same date or within three months of each other, the Board publishes a reduced $20 CMP application fee for additional qualifications submitted on the same business day; each still needs its own declaration.

ASCP BOC audits a percentage of CMP declarations. If you are selected, you must produce documentation for every activity you listed. Keep certificates as you earn them rather than hunting for them in year three. After a successful CMP cycle you receive an electronic renewal letter with valid dates. Beginning January 1, 2026, individuals who complete CMP also receive a digital badge through Credly.

How to Use This Independent Guide

Most candidates with current IHC bench experience should plan 30 to 50 hours over four to eight weeks. Weight that time to the January 22, 2026 outline, not to whatever your last in-service covered:

1. Staining (30–40%) — spend the largest block here: antibody structure, direct and indirect methods, avidin-biotin versus polymer methods, in situ hybridization, expected staining patterns, titration, troubleshooting, mounting, and preliminary screening of control and patient slides.
2. Detection systems (20–25%) — immunofluorescence, horseradish peroxidase and alkaline phosphatase enzymes, chromogens and substrates, endogenous-enzyme and biotin/protein blocking, polymer/multimer detection, and amplification.
3. Laboratory operations (15–20%) — documentation, control tissues, analytic validation, safety, laboratory mathematics, ancillary equipment, and U.S. regulatory sources.
4. Specimen handling (10–15%) and epitope enhancement (10–15%) — fixation and processing windows, cytology, immunofluorescence, and frozen caveats, then heat-induced versus enzyme-induced retrieval.

A practical calendar is two to three focused hours, three or four days a week. Front-load staining and detection. Mix laboratory-operations facts (validation starting sample sizes, OSHA formaldehyde limits, dilution math) into those weeks rather than saving them for a single cram night.
