Where the destination is fixed, the path is where autonomy lives.
Mastery. Change routinely destroys mastery: an expert in the old system becomes a novice in the new one. That loss is a genuine motivational hit and it explains why the most capable staff sometimes resist most strongly — they have the most competence to lose. Interventions that rebuild mastery quickly are therefore disproportionately valuable: early super-user roles, visible skill progression, and framing the learning dip as temporary and expected.
Purpose. This is where the benefits material earns its keep. People invest in what they consider worthwhile, which means communication that explains what this change is for in terms the audience values does real motivational work — not just informational work. "We are migrating to a new platform" carries no purpose. "So that a customer never has to repeat their story to three different people" does.
