About the K53 Code 1 Motorcycle Exam
The South Africa K53 Code 1 learner's licence test is the knowledge test for a motorcycle, motor tricycle or motor quadrucycle learner licence. Government sources identify three tested areas: rules of the road, road traffic signs and markings, and vehicle controls. Code 1 applies to a motorcycle with or without a sidecar, motor tricycle or quadrucycle; applicants may apply from age 16 for a motorcycle not exceeding 125 cc and from age 18 for larger motorcycles. A Code 1 learner may ride the class of motorcycle covered by the licence, but may not carry another person on the motorcycle while learning. The learner's licence is valid for 24 months and cannot be extended.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a South African Code 1 learner's licence cover?
Code 1 covers a motorcycle with or without a sidecar, a motor tricycle or a motor quadrucycle. Government guidance says applicants must be at least 16 for motorcycles not exceeding 125 cc and at least 18 for larger motorcycles.
What topics are tested on the K53 Code 1 learner test?
The official learner test covers rules of the road, road traffic signs and markings, and vehicle controls. For Code 1, vehicle controls include motorcycle controls such as the throttle, clutch, front brake, rear brake, gear lever, indicators and mirrors.
What score do I need to pass?
The published minimum marks are section based: 22 out of 28 for rules of the road, 23 out of 28 for road traffic signs, and 6 out of 8 for vehicle controls. Failing one section means you do not qualify even if your total looks high.
How long is the Code 1 learner test?
KwaZulu-Natal Transport publishes a one-hour learner licence test. The national gov.za service page does not publish one universal time limit, so candidates should confirm current timing with the DLTC where they book.
How much does the learner licence test cost?
Fees vary by province and licensing office. The national gov.za page instructs applicants to contact the local licensing office; Western Cape currently publishes R68 to book the learner test and R33 to issue the learner's licence after passing.
Can a Code 1 learner carry a passenger?
No. Western Cape Government guidance states that a learner driver may not carry another person on a motorcycle. A licensed driver generally accompanies learner drivers, but the motorcycle learner is the exception because there is no supervising driver seat.
How long is a South African learner's licence valid?
A learner's licence is valid for 24 months and cannot be extended. If it expires before the driving licence is obtained, the candidate must apply and test again.
