About the Wales GCSE Maths & Numeracy (Double) Exam
Made-for-Wales GCSE Mathematics and Numeracy (Double Award) is the unitised mathematics qualification for Wales first taught from September 2025 and first awarded from November 2026. It replaces the previous pair of standalone GCSEs (Mathematics and Mathematics – Numeracy) for new Year 10 entrants, integrating mathematical concepts with practical numeracy and financial literacy under the Curriculum for Wales. Assessment is three written units: Unit 1 focuses on financial mathematics and other applications of numeracy with a calculator (30%); Unit 2 is non-calculator with a strong emphasis on geometry and probability among other content (30%); Unit 3 is calculator-allowed and carries 40%. The four content areas—Number, Algebra, Geometry and measures, and Statistics and probability—are interconnected across every unit. The qualification is available in English and Cymraeg, graded as a double award on the eight-point A*A*–GG scale with Foundation (C–G) and Higher (A*–D) unit tiers.

Number
Four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion, indices, standard form, estimation and financial mathematics (pay, deductions, interest, best buys, currency, VAT, budgeting) with particular weight in Unit 1.
Algebra
Simplifying expressions, solving linear and simultaneous equations, inequalities, sequences, formulae, rearranging, and interpreting linear and other graphs in pure and applied contexts.
Geometry and measures
Angles, shapes, perimeter, area, volume and surface area, Pythagoras and trigonometry, transformations, scale, bearings, time and compound measures—including non-calculator geometry in Unit 2.
Statistics and probability
Averages and spread, charts and tables, interpreting data, theoretical and experimental probability, and combined events. Probability is a major Unit 2 focus; calculator-supported statistics appear in Unit 3.

How is this different from the old WJEC GCSE Mathematics – Numeracy?
The outgoing GCSE Mathematics – Numeracy was a separate single award alongside GCSE Mathematics. The Made-for-Wales Double Award (from 2025) combines mathematics and numeracy into one unitised qualification worth two GCSE grades, with three units and a stronger integrated financial-numeracy focus. Summer 2026 is the final full series for the old standalone qualifications.
What are the three units?
