1How many novels does a centre choose from the WJEC Unit 1 Narrative set-text list for Made-for-Wales GCSE Cymraeg Language and Literature?
A.Two novels studied in full by every candidate
B.One novel chosen from a published list of six titles
C.Any Welsh novel the centre prefers with no list
D.Three short novels compared in the same paper
Explanation: Unit 1 requires learners to study one novel from WJEC’s published selection of six titles. Centres may choose different titles for different cohorts, but candidates prepare one set novel for the written exam.
2Which title is on the official Unit 1 novel list for Made-for-Wales GCSE Cymraeg Language and Literature?
A.Harry Potter a Maen yr Athronydd
B.Llyfr Glas Nebo
C.Y Beibl Cymraeg Newydd
D.Under Milk Wood
Explanation: Llyfr Glas Nebo by Manon Steffan Ros is one of the six Unit 1 set novels. The full list is #Helynt, Jac, Llechi, Llyfr Glas Nebo, O Ran and Tom.
3Who wrote the Unit 1 set novel Jac?
A.Mererid Hopwood
B.Rebecca Roberts
C.Guto Dafydd
D.Cynan Llwyd
Explanation: Jac is by Guto Dafydd. Matching author to title is basic set-text knowledge for Unit 1.
4Who wrote the Unit 1 set novel O Ran?
A.Manon Steffan Ros
B.Mererid Hopwood
C.Guto Dafydd
D.Rebecca Roberts
Explanation: O Ran is by Mererid Hopwood on the WJEC Unit 1 list.
5Unit 1 Narrative is assessed as:
A.A centre-marked portfolio only
B.A written examination set and marked by WJEC
C.An individual oral presentation only
D.A group discussion lasting up to 15 minutes
Explanation: Unit 1 is a written examination (1 hour 30 minutes, 60 marks, 30% of Single Award), set and marked by WJEC — not an NEA discussion or oral-only unit.
6What is the Single Award weighting of Unit 1 Narrative?
A.15%
B.20%
C.30%
D.40%
Explanation: For the Single Award, Unit 1 is 30% of the qualification (15% within the Double Award structure). It carries 60 raw marks and maps to 120 UMS maximum.
7In literary analysis, which question best targets theme rather than plot summary?
A.What happens first in chapter one?
B.How does the novel explore belonging and loss across different characters?
C.Who is the main character’s best friend?
D.On which page does the climax begin?
Explanation: Theme questions ask what ideas the novel develops (belonging, loss, identity), not only what events happen. Unit 1 expects appreciation of themes as well as plot and character.
8A candidate writes: ‘The novelist uses short, clipped sentences when the character panics.’ Which Unit 1 skill is this mainly showing?
A.Recalling a character’s full name only
B.Identifying and appreciating the author’s style
C.Listing the publication year of the novel
D.Translating the novel into English
Explanation: Linking sentence length to effect (panic, tension) is style analysis — form and craft — a core Unit 1 focus (identifying and appreciating the author’s style).
9For a personal/creative Unit 1 response written from a character’s point of view, what is essential?
A.Ignore the novel’s events so the response feels freer
B.Show secure knowledge of the original text while inventing a convincing personal voice
C.Write only in bullet points with no continuous prose
D.Copy long paragraphs from the novel without comment
Explanation: Creative responses must demonstrate good knowledge of the original text and apply it — inventing freely without textual anchor fails the unit purpose.
10Which term best describes a character who changes significantly because of events in the novel?
A.Static character
B.Dynamic character
C.Narrator only
D.Setting
Explanation: A dynamic character develops or changes through the narrative. Distinguishing static vs dynamic characters supports plot and character development analysis in Unit 1.

About the Wales GCSE Cymraeg Single Award Exam

Made-for-Wales GCSE Cymraeg Language and Literature (Single Award) is the WJEC integrated Cymraeg language-and-literature qualification for the Curriculum for Wales (first teaching September 2025). It is regulated by Qualifications Wales and is not available to centres in England. The Single Award pathway is Units 1 Narrative, 2 Identity, 3 Attitudes and 4a Linguistic Connections — a smaller volume than the Double Award (120–140 vs 240–280 guided learning hours) but the same demand level on shared units. Grades use the Wales A*–G scale. Official exams and NEAs are assessed in Cymraeg. DISCLOSURE: Official assessment mixes structured and extended writing, text editing, group oracy and individual presentation — this free bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation that keeps Welsh in items when testing language skill, not a past-paper clone or bilingual official paper.

Wales GCSE Cymraeg Single Award Study Tips from Top Performers

1Know your Unit 1 novel in depth — characters, turning points, themes and how the author creates style and atmosphere
2Practise writing from a character’s viewpoint with textual accuracy, not free invention that ignores the novel
3For Unit 2, learn film technique vocabulary (camera, sound, editing, mise-en-scène) and rehearse group discussion with evidence
4In Unit 3, compare poems on attitude and technique; include canu caeth features when relevant and prepare a clear oral structure for the presentation
5For Unit 4a, drill reading for meaning, summarising, and text-editing corrections at word, sentence and whole-text level
6Keep Welsh accuracy high: mutations, agreement, punctuation and register for purpose and audience
7Use official WJEC Sample Assessment Materials and Guidance for Teaching — match command words and mark-scheme expectations
8Remember Single Award stops at Unit 4a — do not prepare Double-only Units 5 and 6 unless your centre moves you to Double Award

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Single Award different from the Double Award?

Both awards share Units 1, 2 and 3. Single Award candidates also sit Unit 4a Linguistic Connections (1 hour 30 minutes, 30%). Double Award candidates sit Unit 4b (longer Linguistic Connections paper), Unit 5 Respond and Create, and Unit 6 Communicating Meaning instead, with roughly double the guided learning hours and double grades (for example A*A*).

Is this the same as GCSE Welsh Language or Welsh Literature in England?

No. This is a Made-for-Wales WJEC qualification regulated by Qualifications Wales for centres in Wales. It integrates language and literature under the Curriculum for Wales and uses the A*–G scale. It is not available to centres in England and is not the same as legacy or England-board Welsh specifications.

What language is the official assessment in?

Official units are assessed in Cymraeg (Welsh). This free practice bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation: stems and explanations are mainly English, but Welsh wording is retained when the item tests vocabulary, grammar, style or literary language skill.

Does this free practice test match the official exam format?

No. Official papers and NEAs are not pure multiple-choice. Unit 1 and Unit 4a use structured and extended responses in Cymraeg; Units 2 and 3 are NEA oracy and writing tasks. Use this bank to build knowledge, terminology and judgment alongside set-text study, SAMs and NEA preparation.

Which novels can centres choose for Unit 1?

WJEC lists six options: #Helynt by Rebecca Roberts; Jac by Guto Dafydd; Llechi by Manon Steffan Ros; Llyfr Glas Nebo by Manon Steffan Ros; O Ran by Mererid Hopwood; and Tom by Cynan Llwyd. Centres may choose different titles for different cohorts.

How much does the exam cost?

WJEC’s published 2026/27 centre entry fee for a full single-award Made-for-Wales GCSE is £46.80. Schools/centres normally pay this; learners in typical school provision do not pay a separate public candidate fee.

When are first teaching and first awards?

First teaching is September 2025 (Wave 1 Made-for-Wales). Units 1, 2 and 3 are first available in summer 2026; Unit 4a is first available in summer 2027. First full award of the Single Award is summer 2027.

What are the assessment objectives?

AO1 Understanding and response and AO2 Expression and communication are each worth 50% overall in the Single Award. Unit weightings differ: for example Unit 1 is 20% AO1 / 10% AO2, while Unit 4a is 10% AO1 / 20% AO2.
