About the Made-for-Wales GCSE Health & Social Care, and Childcare Exam
Made-for-Wales GCSE Health and Social Care, and Childcare is the WJEC qualification designed for the Curriculum for Wales (first teaching September 2026, Wave 2). They are case-study based non-examination assessments. Unit 2 offers a choice of two adult case studies; Unit 3 includes a childcare case study and an investigation. Briefs are released in the first week of September of the assessment year and change annually. Learners should not see the case studies/tasks before the assessment starts.
When is the first award?
First teaching is September 2026. Unit 1 is first available in June 2027; Units 2 and 3 from 2028; the qualification is first awarded in Summer 2028.
Is this the same as GCSE Health and Social Care in England or Northern Ireland?
No. Made-for-Wales is regulated by Qualifications Wales, awarded by WJEC for centres in Wales, uses A*–G grades, and embeds Welsh legislation, language (Active Offer) and service structures. England typically uses different boards and often 9–1 grading; Northern Ireland uses CCEA specifications with different units.
