1Which culture is associated with large prehistoric agricultural settlements and painted pottery on Ukrainian territory?
A.Cucuteni-Trypillia
B.Sarmatian
C.Cherniakhiv
D.Scythian
Explanation: Trypillian communities practised agriculture and produced distinctive painted ceramics. They belong to a much earlier period than the Iron Age steppe peoples or the Cherniakhiv culture.
2Which ancient Greek city near present-day Mykolaiv illustrates trade and cultural exchange on the northern Black Sea coast?
A.Olbia
B.Chersonesus
C.Panticapaeum
D.Tyras
Explanation: Olbia stood near the Southern Buh estuary in the region of modern Mykolaiv. Greek settlements connected the northern Black Sea coast with wider Mediterranean trade and culture.
3The gold pectoral found at Tovsta Mohyla is a major archaeological object associated with which people?
A.The Scythians
B.The Cimmerians
C.The Sarmatians
D.The inhabitants of a Greek city-state
Explanation: The pectoral was found in a Scythian burial mound at Tovsta Mohyla. Its elaborate goldwork provides evidence of elite wealth and artistic connections in the ancient Black Sea region.
4What development is traditionally associated with Prince Oleh's capture of Kyiv in 882?
A.Making Kyiv the centre of a polity linking northern and southern Rus lands
B.Introducing Christianity under Volodymyr
C.The Mongol conquest of Kyiv
D.The royal coronation of Danylo
Explanation: The chronicle chronology associates Oleh's capture with Kyiv becoming the centre of Rus. It should not be confused with later Christianization or the thirteenth-century history of conquest and kingship.
5Why were Princess Olha's fixed tribute obligations and collection centres important?
A.They made tribute collection more regular and less dependent on repeated arbitrary demands
B.They abolished tribute rather than regulating it
C.They gave each tribute collector an unrestricted right to demand more
D.They replaced all local collection places with an obligation to travel to Constantinople
Explanation: Olha's reforms are associated with regulated tribute obligations and collection places. Their significance lies in more organized administration, rather than elimination of princely revenue.
6Which year conventionally marks the Christianization of Rus under Volodymyr the Great?
A.988
B.882
C.1054
D.1240
Explanation: 988 is the conventional date associated with Volodymyr's Christianization of Rus. The wider spread of Christianity was a process, not a claim that no Christians existed there earlier.
7Which dynastic sign associated with Volodymyr the Great appears on his coinage and later became Ukraine's small coat of arms?
A.The trident (tryzub)
B.A Cossack with a musket
C.The Galician lion
D.Archangel Michael
Explanation: Volodymyr's trident links medieval state symbolism with later Ukrainian statehood. The other emblems belong to different heraldic traditions.
8Which written legal collection is associated with Yaroslav the Wise and his successors?
A.Ruska Pravda
B.The Lithuanian Statutes
C.The Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk
D.The Universals of the Central Rada
Explanation: Ruska Pravda records legal rules of medieval Rus, including compensation and social relationships. Its development continued beyond Yaroslav, so it is not a single modern code produced all at once.
9Which Kyiv monument is associated with Yaroslav the Wise, Byzantine mosaics and the cultural life of medieval Rus?
A.Saint Sophia Cathedral
B.The nineteenth-century Saint Volodymyr's Cathedral
C.The eighteenth-century Saint Andrew's Church
D.The twentieth-century House with Chimaeras
Explanation: Saint Sophia is a major surviving monument of medieval Kyiv with mosaics and frescoes. The official programme connects it with Yaroslav; that association need not settle scholarly debates about the earliest construction date.
10Stone tools from early archaeological layers at Korolevo in Zakarpattia are used to study the first settlement of today's Ukrainian territory. Which conclusion does this evidence support?
A.Early humans were present in the area long before written records or modern states
B.The tools alone establish uninterrupted settlement there through to the present
C.The tools identify the language spoken by their makers with certainty
D.The tools establish that the inhabitants were already settled agriculturalists
Explanation: Korolevo provides material evidence of very early human activity. Archaeological tools can inform settlement history without establishing the makers' language, modern nationality or later political institutions.
