1What is the prime factorization of 180 expressed in index notation?
A.2² x 3² x 5
B.2 x 3² x 5²
C.2³ x 3 x 5
D.2² x 3³ x 5
Explanation: Factoring 180 into prime factors: 180 = 2 x 90 = 2 x 2 x 45 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 15 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 5 = 2² x 3² x 5.
2Round the number 0.04856 to three significant figures.
A.0.048
B.0.0485
C.0.0486
D.0.049
Explanation: Significant figures begin at the first non-zero digit (4). The first three significant figures are 4, 8, and 5. Since the succeeding digit is 6 (which is ≥ 5), 5 rounds up to 6, giving 0.0486.
3Solve the linear equation: 5(2x - 3) = 3(x + 9).
A.x = 6
B.x = 4
C.x = 7
D.x = 5
Explanation: Expanding both sides: 10x - 15 = 3x + 27. Subtracting 3x from both sides: 7x - 15 = 27. Adding 15 to both sides: 7x = 42. Dividing by 7: x = 6.
4If set A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} and set B = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}, what is the intersection set A ∩ B?
A.{1, 3, 5}
B.{2, 4, 6}
C.{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10}
D.{8, 10}
Explanation: The intersection A ∩ B contains only the elements that belong to both set A and set B simultaneously, which are {2, 4, 6}.
5Matrices A and B have rows A = [3, -2; 1, 4] and B = [1, 3; -2, 2]. What is A - B?
A.[4, 1; -1, 6]
B.[2, -5; 3, 2]
C.[2, 1; -1, 2]
D.[-2, 5; -3, -2]
Explanation: Subtract corresponding entries: 3 - 1 = 2, -2 - 3 = -5, 1 - (-2) = 3, and 4 - 2 = 2. The result preserves the two-by-two arrangement.
6Find x and y if 2x + y = 13 and 3x - y = 12.
A.x = 5, y = 3
B.x = 4, y = 5
C.x = 6, y = 1
D.x = 3, y = 7
Explanation: Adding eliminates y: 5x = 25, so x = 5. Substitution in 2x + y = 13 gives y = 3, which also satisfies 3x - y = 12.
7Factorize to solve x² - 9x + 20 = 0.
A.x = 4 or x = 5
B.x = -4 or x = -5
C.x = 2 or x = 10
D.x = -2 or x = -10
Explanation: The required numbers have product 20 and sum -9: -4 and -5. Thus (x - 4)(x - 5) = 0, giving x = 4 or x = 5.
8In a right-angled triangle ABC with angle B = 90°, side AB = 5 cm, and side BC = 12 cm, what is the value of tan A?
A.12/5
B.5/12
C.12/13
D.5/13
Explanation: In a right-angled triangle, tan A = Opposite side / Adjacent side. For angle A, the opposite side is BC (12 cm) and the adjacent side is AB (5 cm). Therefore, tan A = 12/5.
9The interior angles of a regular polygon each measure 140°. How many sides does the polygon have?
A.8 sides
B.9 sides
C.10 sides
D.12 sides
Explanation: Each exterior angle of a regular polygon is supplementary to its interior angle: Exterior angle = 180° - 140° = 40°. The sum of exterior angles is always 360°. Number of sides n = 360° / 40° = 9 sides (a nonagon).
10Find the equation of a straight line with a gradient of 3 passing through the point (2, 5).
A.y = 3x - 1
B.y = 3x + 1
C.y = 3x - 11
D.y = 2x + 1
Explanation: Using point-slope form: y - y₁ = m(x - x₁) => y - 5 = 3(x - 2) => y - 5 = 3x - 6 => y = 3x - 1.
