1A company records its materials price variance at purchase. It buys 1,500 kg at NTD 22 per kg against a standard price of NTD 20 per kg. What is the materials price variance?
A.NTD 3,000 unfavorable
B.NTD 3,000 favorable
C.NTD 33,000 unfavorable
D.NTD 30,000 favorable
Explanation: Price variance is actual quantity purchased × (actual price - standard price). It is 1,500 × (NTD 22 - NTD 20) = NTD 3,000 unfavorable because the purchase price exceeds the standard.
2A lessee can readily determine a lease's implicit annual rate of 6%; its incremental borrowing rate is 4%. Under IFRS 16, which rate discounts the unpaid lease payments at commencement?
A.6%, because the implicit rate is readily determinable
B.4%, because the lessee must always choose its own borrowing rate
C.5%, the average of the two available rates
D.0%, because initial lease liabilities are never discounted
Explanation: IFRS 16 uses the implicit rate when it is readily determinable, so the rate here is 6%. The 4% incremental borrowing rate is only the fallback when the implicit rate cannot readily be determined.
3Company X enters into a three-year equipment lease on January 1, 2024, with NTD 300,000 payable at each year-end. The implicit rate cannot be readily determined; its incremental borrowing rate is 5%. The ordinary annuity factor is 2.7232. What is the initial lease liability?
A.NTD 816,960
B.NTD 900,000
C.NTD 857,143
D.NTD 780,000
Explanation: The lease liability is NTD 300,000 × 2.7232 = NTD 816,960. The ordinary-annuity factor is appropriate because payments occur at year-end rather than at commencement.
4On January 1, 2024, Company X recognizes a lease liability of NTD 816,960 with a 5% annual discount rate. Its first NTD 300,000 payment is at December 31. What is first-year lease interest expense?
A.NTD 40,848
B.NTD 45,000
C.NTD 15,000
D.NTD 81,696
Explanation: First-year interest is NTD 816,960 × 5% = NTD 40,848. The remaining portion of the year-end cash payment reduces principal rather than interest expense.
5Under IFRS 9 (Financial Instruments), how are equity investments that are not held for trading classified and measured if the entity does not elect the Fair Value through Other Comprehensive Income (FVTOCI) option at initial recognition?
A.Fair Value through Profit or Loss (FVTPL)
B.Amortized Cost
C.Fair Value through Other Comprehensive Income (FVTOCI)
D.Historical cost less impairment
Explanation: Under IFRS 9, equity investments do not meet the Solely Payments of Principal and Interest (SPPI) test and therefore cannot be measured at amortized cost. By default, they must be measured at FVTPL, unless the irrevocable election is made to designate them at FVTOCI.
6When an entity sells an equity investment designated at FVTOCI under IFRS 9, how are the accumulated gains or losses recognized in Other Comprehensive Income treated?
A.Never recycled to profit or loss; a transfer within equity is permitted
B.Recycled from equity to profit or loss as a realized reclassification adjustment
C.Recognized as an operating cash flow adjustment in the income statement
D.Amortized from OCI to profit or loss over the investment's holding period
Explanation: IFRS 9 prohibits recycling accumulated OCI on equity instruments designated at FVTOCI to profit or loss upon disposal. A transfer within equity is permitted, but it is not mandatory and does not create a disposal gain in profit or loss.
7Under IAS 12, an asset's carrying amount exceeds its tax base. Assuming no recognition exception applies, what type of temporary difference and deferred tax balance result?
A.Taxable temporary difference (應課稅暫時性差異), leading to a Deferred Tax Liability
B.Deductible temporary difference (可減除暫時性差異), leading to a Deferred Tax Asset
C.Permanent difference (永久性差異), requiring no deferred tax accounting
D.Operating loss carryforward
Explanation: An asset with carrying amount above tax base has a taxable temporary difference because recovery will generate taxable amounts exceeding the remaining tax deductions. With no recognition exception, IAS 12 therefore requires a deferred tax liability.
8On December 31, 2024, Company Y has equipment with an accounting carrying amount of NTD 1,000,000 and a tax base of NTD 600,000. The corporate tax rate is 20%. No other temporary differences exist. What deferred tax balance should be reported on the balance sheet?
A.Deferred Tax Liability of NTD 80,000
B.Deferred Tax Asset of NTD 80,000
C.Deferred Tax Liability of NTD 200,000
D.Deferred Tax Asset of NTD 120,000
Explanation: Taxable temporary difference = Book Value - Tax Base = NTD 1,000,000 - NTD 600,000 = NTD 400,000. Deferred Tax Liability = NTD 400,000 * 20% = NTD 80,000.
9Company Z has 1,000,000 ordinary shares throughout 2024 and net profit of NTD 5,000,000. It also has 100,000 cumulative preference shares classified as equity, each with NTD 100 par value and a 6% annual dividend. None is declared. Under IAS 33, what is basic EPS?
A.NTD 4.40 per share
B.NTD 5.00 per share
C.NTD 4.50 per share
D.NTD 3.80 per share
Explanation: The cumulative preference dividend is 100,000 × NTD 100 × 6% = NTD 600,000, whether declared or not. Profit attributable to ordinary shareholders is NTD 5,000,000 - NTD 600,000 = NTD 4,400,000. Basic EPS is NTD 4,400,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = NTD 4.40.
10Under IAS 33, when convertible bonds are evaluated for diluted earnings per share (DEPS) using the 'if-converted' method, what adjustment is made to the numerator (net profit)?
A.After-tax interest expense recognized on the convertible bonds is added back
B.Pre-tax interest expense is added back without tax adjustment
C.Preferred dividends are added back
D.No adjustment is made to the numerator
Explanation: Under the if-converted method in IAS 33, if convertible bonds were converted at the beginning of the period, the company would have saved bond interest expense. Therefore, the interest expense recognized during the period net of tax [Interest * (1 - t)] is added back to profit attributable to ordinary equity holders.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the rolling subject-based pass system work?

Article 10 retains each passed subject for three years individually. Professional subjects pass at 60; Chinese passes at 60 or the sitting's average Chinese score. Candidates complete the remaining subjects before their individual retained passes expire.

Can foreign CPA license holders obtain waivers?

Articles 5, 6 and 9 provide an application route for a qualifying equivalent foreign CPA examination certificate plus at least one year assisting audit-certification work at an accounting firm, with prescribed evidence. Approved candidates are exempt from Chinese, Intermediate Accounting, Advanced Accounting and Cost/Managerial Accounting, leaving Auditing, Commercial Law and Tax Law. A US-CPA credential alone does not automatically grant the waiver.

What is the examination format?

The six professional subjects use mixed multiple-choice and written problems; Chinese is composition. The published scheme specifies no additional oral, practical or assignment assessment. This English MCQ bank does not replace written calculation, extended responses or Chinese composition practice.

What standards are used for accounting and auditing in Taiwan?

The MOEX outline prescribes the preceding-year FSC-endorsed Traditional Chinese IFRS edition for accounting and the applicable Taiwan auditing and quality-management standards, subject to its publication cutoff. This bank uses English explanations of those concepts; candidates must also work with the official Chinese terminology and prescribed standards edition.
