1In Math A (數學甲), evaluate the limit lim(x->0) of (sin 3x)/x.
A.1
B.0
C.3
D.1/3
Explanation: Using the standard limit lim(x->0) (sin u)/u = 1, write (sin 3x)/x = 3 · (sin 3x)/(3x). As x->0, 3x->0 so (sin 3x)/(3x)->1, giving the limit 3.
2Math A: If f(x) = x^3 - 6x^2 + 9x, at which x-value does f have a local maximum?
A.x = 3
B.x = 0
C.x = 2
D.x = 1
Explanation: f'(x) = 3x^2 - 12x + 9 = 3(x-1)(x-3). The critical points are x=1 and x=3. f''(x) = 6x - 12; f''(1) = -6 < 0 so x=1 is a local maximum (f''(3)=6>0 is the local minimum).
3Math A: Compute the definite integral of (2x + 1) dx from x = 0 to x = 3.
A.12
B.9
C.15
D.6
Explanation: The antiderivative of 2x+1 is x^2 + x. Evaluating from 0 to 3 gives (9 + 3) - (0 + 0) = 12.
4Math A: Given vectors a = (1, 2, 2) and b = (2, -1, 2) in space, what is the dot product a · b?
A.0
B.4
C.6
D.8
Explanation: The dot product is (1)(2) + (2)(-1) + (2)(2) = 2 - 2 + 4 = 4. The dot product sums the products of corresponding components.
5Math A: What is the magnitude (length) of the vector v = (3, 4, 12)?
A.12
B.19
C.13
D.169
Explanation: The magnitude is sqrt(3^2 + 4^2 + 12^2) = sqrt(9 + 16 + 144) = sqrt(169) = 13.
6Math A: Solve for x: log_2(x) + log_2(x - 2) = 3.
A.x = 2
B.x = 8
C.x = 6
D.x = 4
Explanation: Combine logs: log_2[x(x-2)] = 3, so x(x-2) = 2^3 = 8, giving x^2 - 2x - 8 = 0 = (x-4)(x+2). Only x=4 is valid since x must exceed 2 for both logs to be defined.
7Math A: A fair die is rolled twice. What is the probability that the sum of the two rolls equals 7?
A.1/6
B.1/12
C.7/36
D.1/9
Explanation: There are 36 equally likely outcomes. The pairs summing to 7 are (1,6),(2,5),(3,4),(4,3),(5,2),(6,1) — exactly 6 outcomes. So the probability is 6/36 = 1/6.
8Math A: How many ways can the letters of the word 'LEVEL' be arranged?
A.60
B.30
C.120
D.20
Explanation: LEVEL has 5 letters with L repeated twice and E repeated twice. The number of distinct arrangements is 5!/(2!·2!) = 120/4 = 30.
9Math A: Find the derivative of f(x) = e^(2x) · cos x at the function level.
A.2 e^(2x) cos x
B.e^(2x)(2 cos x + sin x)
C.e^(2x)(2 cos x - sin x)
D.-e^(2x) sin x
Explanation: Use the product rule: f'(x) = (e^(2x))' cos x + e^(2x)(cos x)' = 2 e^(2x) cos x + e^(2x)(-sin x) = e^(2x)(2 cos x - sin x).
10Math A: The plane has equation 2x - y + 2z = 6. What is the distance from the origin (0,0,0) to this plane?
A.6
B.3
C.1
D.2
Explanation: Distance from a point to plane ax+by+cz=d is |d - (ax0+by0+cz0)| / sqrt(a^2+b^2+c^2). Here it is |6 - 0| / sqrt(4+1+4) = 6/3 = 2.

About the AST 分科測驗 Exam

The Advanced Subjects Test (分科測驗, AST) is one of Taiwan's three main university entrance examinations, administered by the College Entrance Examination Center (CEEC) and used mainly for the tuition-placement (分發入學) admission channel. Introduced from the 111 學年度 (2022) to replace the former Designated Subjects Exam (指考), it cut the subject count from 10 to 7; from the 114 學年度 (2025) Math B (數學乙) was added, bringing the total to 8 subjects: Math A, Math B, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, and Civics & Society. Each paper lasts 80 minutes, is marked out of 100 raw points, and is converted to a 60-level scale (60級分). Candidates freely choose which subjects to sit, and each paper mixes single- and multiple-answer MCQs, fill-in items (math), mixed item-sets, and non-multiple-choice items, with selected-response making up about 70-80% of each test. The 115 學年度 (2026) AST is scheduled for 11-12 July 2026.

AST 分科測驗 Study Tips from Top Performers

1Check your target university programs' required AST subjects and weightings first, then prioritize only the subjects you must sit — choosing too many can dilute your preparation.
2Cover the Grade 12 advanced electives (加深加廣選修), not just the GSAT range; the AST specifically tests this deeper material, which is a common gap for re-sit candidates.
3For the science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), drill data interpretation, experiment design, and multi-step reasoning, since experiment (探究與實作) content is examinable.
4Practice the mixed item-sets and combined answer sheet (卷卡合一) format using CEEC's official reference papers (參考試卷) so you are comfortable with the layout under time pressure.
5In Math A and Math B, master the fill-in (選填) items: every blank must be correct to earn marks, so accuracy in full calculations matters more than speed.
6For History, Geography and Civics, train source/map/chart reading and cross-topic integration rather than rote memorization, reflecting the 108-curriculum competency (素養) style.
7Pace each 80-minute paper deliberately: budget time for the longer reading-heavy mixed items at the end and leave room to write out non-multiple-choice answers fully.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many subjects does the AST have and which are they?

From the 114 學年度 (2025) the AST has 8 subjects: Math A (數學甲), Math B (數學乙), Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, and Civics & Society. Candidates freely choose which subjects to sit based on the requirements of their target university programs.

How long is each AST paper and how is it scored?

Each subject paper lasts 80 minutes and is marked out of 100 raw points. For tuition placement (分發入學), each subject's raw score is converted to a 60-level scale (60級分), in which the average of the top 1% of candidates' scores divided by 60 sets each level interval.

How much does the AST cost in 2026?

For 115 學年度 (2026), there is a basic operation fee of NT$200 for group registration (NT$250 for individual registration) plus a test fee of NT$170 for each subject chosen. Low-income candidates pay nothing, and lower-middle-income candidates receive a 60% reduction.

When is the 2026 AST held?

The 115 學年度 AST is scheduled for 11-12 July 2026, over two days. Day one covers Physics, Chemistry, Math A and Biology; day two covers History, Geography, Math B and Civics & Society. Registration runs in early June 2026.

What is the difference between the AST and the GSAT (學測)?

The GSAT (學測) is taken in January and covers Grade 10-11 compulsory material across more subjects; the AST is taken in July, covers Grade 10-12 compulsory plus advanced electives, and is used mainly for the final tuition-placement channel. The AST does not test Chinese or English, which are taken from GSAT results.

Is the AST entirely multiple choice?

No. Each paper has a selected-response part (single- and multiple-answer MCQs, plus fill-in items for math) making up about 70-80%, and a part with mixed item-sets and non-multiple-choice questions making up about 20-30%, all on a combined answer sheet (卷卡合一).

How did the AST replace the old 指考?

From the 111 學年度 (2022) the AST (分科測驗) replaced the former Designated Subjects Exam (指考) under the 108 curriculum, cutting subjects from 10 to 7 and switching from a 100-point scale to a 60-level scale. Math B was reinstated from 2025, raising the count to 8.
