About the AST 分科測驗 Exam
The Advanced Subjects Test (分科測驗, AST) is one of Taiwan's three main university entrance examinations, administered by the College Entrance Examination Center (CEEC) and used mainly for the tuition-placement (分發入學) admission channel. Introduced from the 111 學年度 (2022) to replace the former Designated Subjects Exam (指考), it cut the subject count from 10 to 7; from the 114 學年度 (2025) Math B (數學乙) was added, bringing the total to 8 subjects: Math A, Math B, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, and Civics & Society. Each paper lasts 80 minutes, is marked out of 100 raw points, and is converted to a 60-level scale (60級分). Candidates freely choose which subjects to sit, and each paper mixes single- and multiple-answer MCQs, fill-in items (math), mixed item-sets, and non-multiple-choice items, with selected-response making up about 70-80% of each test. The 115 學年度 (2026) AST is scheduled for 11-12 July 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many subjects does the AST have and which are they?
From the 114 學年度 (2025) the AST has 8 subjects: Math A (數學甲), Math B (數學乙), Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, and Civics & Society. Candidates freely choose which subjects to sit based on the requirements of their target university programs.
How long is each AST paper and how is it scored?
Each subject paper lasts 80 minutes and is marked out of 100 raw points. For tuition placement (分發入學), each subject's raw score is converted to a 60-level scale (60級分), in which the average of the top 1% of candidates' scores divided by 60 sets each level interval.
How much does the AST cost in 2026?
For 115 學年度 (2026), there is a basic operation fee of NT$200 for group registration (NT$250 for individual registration) plus a test fee of NT$170 for each subject chosen. Low-income candidates pay nothing, and lower-middle-income candidates receive a 60% reduction.
When is the 2026 AST held?
The 115 學年度 AST is scheduled for 11-12 July 2026, over two days. Day one covers Physics, Chemistry, Math A and Biology; day two covers History, Geography, Math B and Civics & Society. Registration runs in early June 2026.
What is the difference between the AST and the GSAT (學測)?
The GSAT (學測) is taken in January and covers Grade 10-11 compulsory material across more subjects; the AST is taken in July, covers Grade 10-12 compulsory plus advanced electives, and is used mainly for the final tuition-placement channel. The AST does not test Chinese or English, which are taken from GSAT results.
Is the AST entirely multiple choice?
No. Each paper has a selected-response part (single- and multiple-answer MCQs, plus fill-in items for math) making up about 70-80%, and a part with mixed item-sets and non-multiple-choice questions making up about 20-30%, all on a combined answer sheet (卷卡合一).
How did the AST replace the old 指考?
From the 111 學年度 (2022) the AST (分科測驗) replaced the former Designated Subjects Exam (指考) under the 108 curriculum, cutting subjects from 10 to 7 and switching from a 100-point scale to a 60-level scale. Math B was reinstated from 2025, raising the count to 8.
