1Under Article 9 of Taiwan's Building Act (建築法), part of a building is demolished and altered within its original site, without increasing its height or area. Which statutory construction category applies?
A.Reconstruction (改建)
B.New construction (新建)
C.Addition (增建)
D.Repair (修建)
Explanation: Article 9 distinguishes partial demolition and alteration (改建) from complete demolition and rebuilding (新建). The partial alteration must remain within the original site without increasing height or area.
2Under Articles 7 and 28 of Taiwan's Building Act (建築法), which permit authorizes construction of a freestanding chimney classified as a miscellaneous structure (雜項工作物)?
A.Building permit (建造執照)
B.Miscellaneous permit (雜項執照)
C.Use permit (使用執照)
D.Demolition permit (拆除執照)
Explanation: Article 7 lists chimneys among miscellaneous structures. Article 28 assigns construction of miscellaneous structures to the 雜項執照 permit category.
3Under the ordinary procedure in Article 70 of Taiwan's Building Act (建築法), who applies together for a use permit after construction is complete, assuming no statutory exception applies?
A.The designer, contractor, and architects association
B.The applicant and original designer only
C.The applicant (起造人), contractor (承造人), and supervisor (監造人)
D.The contractor and supervisor only
Explanation: Article 70 requires the applicant to apply together with the contractor and supervisor. It also provides exceptional circumstances for an application by the applicant alone, so the ordinary rule should not be stated as exceptionless.
4An architect argues that a building permit transfers responsibility for the architect's noncompliant design to the permitting authority. Which response follows Taiwan's Architects Act (建築師法) and Building Act (建築法)?
A.Responsibility transfers after the permit is issued
B.The architect remains responsible for the commissioned design despite the permit
C.Responsibility transfers when construction begins
D.Responsibility is limited by statute to the amount of the design fee
Explanation: Architects Act Articles 17 and 19 require compliant design documents and assign responsibility for commissioned design to the architect. Building Act Article 26 makes permit approval an administrative permission and preserves the relevant parties' legal responsibilities; it does not make the architect solely liable for everyone else's acts.
5Which ratio defines Building Coverage Ratio (建蔽率) in Taiwan's Building Technical Regulations?
A.Total floor area divided by site area
B.Open-space area divided by site area
C.Building area (建築面積) divided by site area (基地面積)
D.Net usable area divided by gross floor area
Explanation: Building Coverage Ratio compares the legally defined building area with the site area. It controls site coverage, while Floor Area Ratio concerns the applicable aggregate floor area.
6A fire compartment is subject to Article 79's ordinary 1,500 m² area accounting rule in Taiwan's Building Technical Regulations. Its actual area is 2,400 m², including 1,800 m² effectively protected by automatic extinguishing equipment. Ignoring other exemptions or stricter provisions, what area is counted?
A.1,500 m²
B.1,200 m²
C.2,400 m²
D.600 m²
Explanation: Article 79 permits exclusion of half the floor area within the effective coverage of automatic extinguishing equipment. The counted area is 2,400 − (1,800 ÷ 2) = 1,500 m², meeting this area limit alone; other compartment requirements still apply.
7A 24 m² residential habitable room has daylighting openings behind a covered balcony projecting 2.5 m from the wall. Article 41 of Taiwan's Building Technical Regulations requires a one-eighth opening ratio, and Article 42 counts these openings at 70% because the balcony exceeds 2 m in width. Assuming all other conditions are met, what actual opening area is needed, rounded up to the nearest 0.1 m²?
A.2.1 m²
B.3.0 m²
C.4.8 m²
D.4.3 m²
Explanation: The required effective area is 24/8 = 3.0 m². Because only 70% counts, actual area must be at least 3.0/0.70 = 4.2857 m², rounded upward to 4.3 m²; multiplying the requirement by 70% would reverse the adjustment.
8A 30 m² general habitable room relies on operable exterior openings for ventilation, without qualifying alternative ventilation equipment. Under Article 43 of Taiwan's Building Technical Regulations, what is its minimum effective ventilation opening area?
A.1.5 m²
B.3.0 m²
C.3.75 m²
D.0.8 m²
Explanation: Article 43 requires effective ventilation openings of at least 5% of floor area for general habitable rooms and bathrooms, unless qualifying ventilation equipment is provided. The calculation is 30 × 0.05 = 1.5 m²; kitchens have a separate rule.
9Which mechanism under Taiwan's Urban Renewal Act (都市更新條例) distributes renewed land, buildings, or rights payments according to pre-renewal rights values and contributed funds?
A.Land expropriation (土地徵收)
B.Surface-rights leasing (地上權出租)
C.Rights transformation (權利變換)
D.An ordinary sale of the entire property for cash
Explanation: Article 3 defines 權利變換 as participation through land, buildings, other rights, or funds followed by distribution based on pre-renewal rights values and contributed funds. The statutory mechanism is broader than a simple exchange of an old apartment for an equal-sized new apartment.
10An otherwise eligible reconstruction project is submitted under Taiwan's Statute for Expediting Reconstruction of Urban Unsafe and Old Buildings (都市危險及老舊建築物加速重建條例). Which ownership consent satisfies Article 5?
A.A majority of owners by headcount only
B.Consent of all land and legal building owners within the reconstruction plan area
C.Consent of owners holding four-fifths of the land area only
D.Approval by the condominium management committee alone
Explanation: Article 5 requires consent from all land and legal building owners within the reconstruction plan area. Consent is one prerequisite; eligibility, plan approval, and building-permit requirements must also be satisfied.

About the Taiwan Architect Examination Exam

Independent practice by OpenExamPrep for 專門職業及技術人員高等考試建築師考試. The ordinary MOEX assessment uses Chinese-language written papers, including technical calculations and extended hand-drawn design work. This English-language MCQ study adaptation helps review knowledge and decisions across the six official subjects. It is not an official translation or a simulation of the exam's language environment or assessment format, and cannot replace writing, drawing, or design-performance practice. English is provided under the special reciprocal foreign-license assessment provision in Article 15, not as a general English version of the ordinary six-paper sitting.

Taiwan Architect Examination: Suggested Study Strategy

1Use the official six-subject outline to identify topics beyond this foundation bank, including nonurban land-use regulation, procurement, construction systems, and building services.
2Read Chinese legal and technical terminology alongside the current official provisions; verify exceptions and effective dates rather than memorizing isolated thresholds.
3Work calculations independently, recording assumptions, support conditions, units, and the distinction between nominal and design strength.
4Prepare for the four-hour site-planning and eight-hour architectural-design papers with timed hand-drawn responses and review of functional, structural, environmental, and accessibility decisions.
5Check passed-subject retention dates and approved exemptions with MOEX; a bank score does not establish official subject credit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What must candidates pass?

Exam Rules Article 13 requires 60/100 in each required subject and retains a passed subject's result for three years from the result announcement. Approved subject exemptions may apply. Passing the examination is distinct from completing the certification and practice-registration requirements to work as an architect.

What are the 2026 dates, duration, and fee?

The 2026 (115年) handbook schedules the architect papers for 14–16 November and lists a standard NTD 2,300 registration fee. Examination time totals 20 hours: four 2-hour technical papers, 4-hour site planning and urban design, and 8-hour architectural programming and design.

Is the official exam entirely multiple choice?

No. Two subjects are MCQ, two combine MCQ with written responses, and two require written design/drawing responses. The 2026 handbook does not prescribe one fixed total number of questions. The ordinary route lists no separate oral assessment, submitted coursework, or portfolio, but the timed drawing papers are mandatory unless an approved exemption applies.

Who is eligible?

Article 4 includes designated architecture-related diploma/degree routes, an architecture graduate-degree route with at least 18 documented architecture-design credits, and an equivalent-qualification route with at least 18 design credits plus specified supporting subjects and credits. It also retains a qualifying-examination route. Article 14 covers eligible foreign candidates. Check MOEX's document requirements for the exact route; a generic architecture degree or claimed internship alone does not establish eligibility.

What languages does the assessment permit?

The ordinary written examination uses Chinese. Article 15 provides English questions alongside Chinese questions and permits Chinese or English responses for the specially approved reciprocal foreign-architect-license assessment. That conditional provision does not establish a general English-language sitting of the ordinary six-paper examination.

How should this English-language bank be used?

This is independent English-language MCQ study practice by OpenExamPrep, not an official translation or an exam-format or language-environment simulation. Preserve Chinese legal and technical terminology in your study, consult the official texts, and separately practice written calculations and timed architectural drawings. The bank is a foundation across six subjects, not exhaustive coverage of every outline topic.
