Sample YÖKDİL Practice Questions

Try these sample questions to review concepts for the YÖKDİL exam. Each question includes a detailed explanation. Start the interactive quiz above for the full 40+ question experience with AI tutoring.

1In the hypothetical trial report, the treatment's _____ was measured by how successfully it produced the intended outcome, rather than by its cost or convenience.
A.efficacy
B.availability
C.affordability
D.acceptability
Explanation: 'Efficacy' concerns the ability to produce an intended effect. The stem defines that meaning and distinguishes it from practical considerations such as access and cost.
2The survey reports that opportunities for intergenerational mobility were _____: fewer young adults could enter higher income groups than in the previous survey.
A.consolidated
B.diversified
C.curtailed
D.redistributed
Explanation: 'Curtailed' means reduced or restricted. The comparison with fewer young adults moving upward specifies a reduction in opportunities.
3The engineering team tested the prototype _____, using demanding procedures designed to expose even minor faults before deployment.
A.provisionally
B.selectively
C.periodically
D.rigorously
Explanation: 'Rigorously' means thoroughly and with demanding care. The description of procedures intended to expose even minor faults directly supports that meaning.
4The surveillance project is still running. Its most recent report states: 'Since monitoring began, the prevalence of the condition _____, and researchers _____ several possible explanations.'
A.has risen / have proposed
B.had risen / will propose
C.will rise / had proposed
D.rises / were proposing
Explanation: The report describes developments from a past starting point up to the present. Present perfect in both clauses connects those developments with the ongoing project.
5The laboratory acquired its imaging equipment last year and can now analyze the samples. Complete the counterfactual: 'If it _____ the equipment last year, its researchers _____ these analyses today.'
A.did not acquire / will not perform
B.had not acquired / would not be able to perform
C.does not acquire / were not performing
D.would not acquire / had not performed
Explanation: The condition concerns an unreal alternative to a completed past acquisition. The consequence concerns present ability, so this mixed conditional combines past perfect with 'would not be able to'.
6Choose the phrase expressing a strong deduction about a past event: 'The samples _____ stored separately, because their labels and storage records show different locations.'
A.must have been
B.should have been
C.could not have been
D.would rather be
Explanation: 'Must have been' expresses a strong inference about the past. The labels and records are presented as evidence for that inference, rather than a recommendation about what ought to have happened.
7The engineers designed a filter capable _____ extracting suspended particles _____ the test fluid.
A.with / in
B.of / from
C.for / by
D.to / at
Explanation: The adjective takes 'capable of' followed by a gerund. The extraction construction then uses 'from' to identify the material from which particles are removed.
8Complete the inverted expression of immediate succession: '_____ had the seismologists finished calibrating the sensors _____ a tremor was recorded.'
A.Both / and
B.Neither / nor
C.Whether / or
D.Hardly / when
Explanation: 'Hardly ... when' can express one event happening immediately after another. Placing 'hardly' first requires inversion, giving 'had the seismologists finished'.
9Choose the present subjunctive form required by the stated instruction: 'Institutional guidelines stipulate that research protocols _____ approved before recruitment begins.'
A.are
B.be
C.were
D.will be
Explanation: A mandative subjunctive uses the base form 'be' regardless of the subject's number. The instruction specifies that form rather than asking learners to reject all indicative alternatives found in English usage.
10Complete the affirmative comparison of equality: 'The historians regard institutional trust as being _____ important to investment as access to credit.'
A.such
B.more
C.equally
D.as
Explanation: Equality is expressed by 'as ... as'. Inserting 'as' before 'important' completes the comparison with access to credit.

About the YÖKDİL Exam

Independent YÖKDİL English practice by OpenExamPrep. This English-language MCQ study adaptation offers 40 four-option items across science, health and social-science contexts, with Turkish preserved for translation tasks. YÖKDİL: Suggested Study Strategy

1Choose your official language and academic field before selecting field-specific reading materials.
2Read for agency, evidence, uncertainty and logical relationships; outside specialist knowledge should not override the passage.
3Compare both halves of a translation and preserve modality, causation, time and scope even when word order changes.
4Combine these four-option study items with official five-option materials and the e-YÖKDİL demonstration interface when relevant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which language and field can I choose?

The 2026 paper guide offers English in Fen Bilimleri, Sağlık Bilimleri and Sosyal Bilimler. Arabic is offered in Social Sciences; German and French Social Sciences are listed for the second paper sitting. Candidates select one language and field per sitting. The 2026 e-YÖKDİL guide lists English sittings for each of the three fields. Turkish is integral to bilingual translation tasks and appears in official instructions.

What is the difference between YÖKDİL and e-YÖKDİL?

The electronic guide explicitly states equivalence and the same acquired rights. Delivery centers, schedules, capacity and fees differ. That does not require a second practice bank; this bank provides shared English study, while ÖSYM's demonstration interface prepares candidates for computer delivery.

What score is required?

There is no universal pass mark for every use. Only correct responses count toward the score out of 100, and wrong responses are not deducted. The receiving institution or application scheme sets its minimum, so check the particular admission or appointment notice rather than assuming one threshold applies to all master's, doctoral or promotion applications.

Is this an official mock exam?

No. This is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation with four options, English explanations and integral Turkish translation text. It is not an official translation or simulation of the exam's language environment, and its mixed-field practice is not a full paper for any one field. Use official materials to practice the five-option format.
