1The report recommends measures to mitigate the _____ effects of air pollution, especially the damage to public health.
A.detrimental
B.incidental
C.prospective
D.intermittent
Explanation: 'Detrimental' means harmful. The explicit reference to damage identifies the effects as harmful rather than merely possible, occasional, or secondary.
2Despite prolonged negotiations, the delegates failed to reach a _____: several still opposed the final proposal.
A.discrepancy
B.consensus
C.divergence
D.controversy
Explanation: To 'reach a consensus' is to arrive at general agreement. The delegates' continuing opposition explains why agreement was not achieved.
3The researchers predicted a seasonal pattern. Although their colleagues were initially skeptical, subsequent observations _____ their prediction.
A.ruled out
B.bore out
C.broke down
D.gave away
Explanation: 'Bore out' is the past tense of 'bear out', meaning confirm or support. The contrast with initial skepticism signals that later evidence supported the prediction.
4By the time the conservation treaty _____ into effect next year, the signatories _____ their initial preparations.
A.comes / will have completed
B.will come / have completed
C.came / will complete
D.had come / complete
Explanation: The future time clause uses present simple 'comes'. Future perfect 'will have completed' places completion before that future reference point.
5If the commission _____ the drainage system a decade ago, the city _____ such severe flooding last winter.
A.installed / will not suffer
B.had installed / would not have suffered
C.installs / would not suffer
D.would have installed / had not suffered
Explanation: This is a counterfactual about a past condition and a past consequence. Past perfect belongs in the if-clause, and 'would have' plus a past participle expresses the unreal result.
6The researchers are concerned _____ groundwater depletion because local farmers rely _____ the aquifer for irrigation.
A.with / in
B.about / on
C.for / at
D.from / to
Explanation: 'Concerned about' expresses worry, while 'rely on' expresses dependence. Both prepositions must fit their respective constructions.
7Choose the pair that forms a standard inverted construction meaning 'immediately after': '_____ had the team completed the procedure _____ the monitoring alarm sounded.'
A.Whether / or
B.Hardly / than
C.Neither / nor
D.No sooner / than
Explanation: The standard pairing is 'no sooner ... than'. Fronted 'no sooner' triggers subject–auxiliary inversion, producing 'had the team completed'.
8Choose the present subjunctive form for this formal requirement: 'The ethics committee insists that every participant _____ fully informed before giving consent.'
A.is
B.be
C.was
D.will be
Explanation: The requested mandative subjunctive uses the base form 'be', even with singular 'every participant'. The question specifies this grammatical form because indicative and 'should' constructions also occur in English.
9Complete the gap in this historical study passage: 'Mechanization did not transform every household at once. Its influence spread over many decades, and almost every aspect of daily life was _____ affected. The report therefore describes a gradual transformation rather than an immediate one.'
A.eventually
B.simultaneously
C.previously
D.temporarily
Explanation: 'Eventually' places the widespread effects at the end of a gradual process. The surrounding sentences explicitly contrast that development with an immediate transformation.
10Complete the gap: 'The town's industrial expansion drew workers from surrounding farms. Its population grew _____ an unprecedented rate, creating pressure on housing. Officials struggled to provide accommodation quickly enough.'
A.on
B.at
C.in
D.by
Explanation: A rate describing the speed of change normally follows 'at'. Here 'at an unprecedented rate' describes how rapidly the population grew.

YDS: Suggested Study Strategy

1Read each complete context before choosing a connector; grammatical possibility alone may not preserve the intended relationship.
2For translation, compare agency, tense, modality, logical links and scope rather than demanding identical word order.
3Separate what a passage supports from outside knowledge, and preserve hedging such as 'may' and 'could'.
4Practice with the official five-option materials and the e-YDS demonstration interface when preparing for the actual delivery format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which languages and formats does YDS use?

The 2026 guide lists 20 languages for YDS/1, with German, Arabic, French, English and Russian offered again in YDS/2. Persian, Greek, Bulgarian, Spanish and Italian are scheduled electronically. The five main paper languages and those five electronic languages use MCQs; the other 15 use eight written translation passages involving Turkish. This practice bank focuses on English, with English explanations and integral Turkish translation text.

Is e-YDS a separate qualification?

The 2026 e-YDS guide states that it is equivalent to YDS and provides the same rights. It has different delivery, scheduling, capacity and fees. Use the official demonstration interface to prepare for electronic administration; these four-option study questions do not reproduce it.

How are scores calculated?

Only correct MCQ responses count, with no deduction for wrong responses. Scores are calculated out of 100; with all 80 items valid and equally weighted, 80 correct responses yield 100 points. Canceled items can change weighting. Written translations are assessed by juries. The score needed for admission, appointment or compensation depends on the receiving body's rules.

Does this replace writing or speaking practice?

The English YDS test does not have a speaking component. Our English-language MCQ study adaptation develops receptive language and translation judgment. It is not an official translation or exam simulation, and recognizing an accurate translation does not substitute for producing one in a written-translation language.
