1What is the value of the arithmetic expression: (-18) ÷ (-3) - 2 × (-4) + (-5)?
A.7
B.9
C.11
D.13
Explanation: Follow standard order of operations: first perform division and multiplication from left to right, then addition and subtraction. (-18) ÷ (-3) = 6. Next, 2 × (-4) = -8, so subtracting this gives - (-8) = +8. Adding (-5) gives 6 + 8 - 5 = 9.
2If a, b, and c are positive integers such that (3a + 4b) / 2 = 5c + 1, which of the following statements must always be true?
A.a is an even integer
B.b is an odd integer
C.c is an even integer
D.a + b is an odd integer
Explanation: Multiply both sides by 2 to clear the fraction: 3a + 4b = 2(5c + 1) = 10c + 2. Notice that 4b is always even, and 10c + 2 is also an even integer regardless of whether c is even or odd. Rearranging gives 3a = (10c + 2) - 4b, which is an even integer minus an even integer, resulting in an even integer. Because 3 is odd, for 3a to be even, a must be an even integer. Parity of b and c cannot be definitively determined.
3If x and y are prime numbers such that x^2 - y^2 = 21, what is the value of x + y?
A.5
B.7
C.9
D.11
Explanation: Factor the difference of squares: (x - y)(x + y) = 21. Because x and y are positive primes and x^2 - y^2 > 0, we have x > y > 0, so x - y < x + y. The integer factor pairs of 21 are (1, 21) and (3, 7). Case 1: x - y = 1 and x + y = 21 yields 2x = 22 -> x = 11, y = 10; here 10 is not prime. Case 2: x - y = 3 and x + y = 7 yields 2x = 10 -> x = 5, y = 2. Both 5 and 2 are prime numbers. Therefore, x + y = 7.
4The sum of five consecutive odd integers is 175. What is the largest of these five integers?
A.35
B.37
C.39
D.41
Explanation: Let the middle integer be n. The five consecutive odd integers can be written as n - 4, n - 2, n, n + 2, and n + 4. Their sum is 5n = 175, so n = 35. The five integers are 31, 33, 35, 37, and 39. The largest integer is n + 4 = 35 + 4 = 39.
5What is the simplified value of the fraction: (8! - 7!) / (6! + 5!)?
A.36
B.42
C.48
D.54
Explanation: Factor out common factorial terms in the numerator and denominator: 8! - 7! = 7!(8 - 1) = 7! × 7. Similarly, 6! + 5! = 5!(6 + 1) = 5! × 7. The fraction becomes (7! × 7) / (5! × 7). The factor of 7 cancels out, leaving 7! / 5! = (7 × 6 × 5!) / 5! = 7 × 6 = 42.
6For a two-digit positive integer AB, reversing the digits produces the integer BA. If AB - BA = 45, what is the value of A - B?
A.3
B.4
C.5
D.6
Explanation: Using place-value expansion, AB = 10A + B and BA = 10B + A. The difference is AB - BA = (10A + B) - (10B + A) = 9A - 9B = 9(A - B). Given that AB - BA = 45, we have 9(A - B) = 45, which simplifies to A - B = 5.
7The four-digit number 4a7b is divisible by both 4 and 9. If a ≠ b, what is the sum of all possible values of digit a?
A.4
B.5
C.6
D.8
Explanation: For a number to be divisible by 4, its last two digits 7b must form a multiple of 4. Between 70 and 79, only 72 and 76 are divisible by 4, so b = 2 or b = 6. For divisibility by 9, the sum of digits 4 + a + 7 + b = 11 + a + b must be a multiple of 9. Case 1: If b = 2, digit sum is 13 + a. The only single digit making this a multiple of 9 is a = 5 (13 + 5 = 18). Here a = 5 ≠ b = 2, which is valid. Case 2: If b = 6, digit sum is 17 + a. The only digit making this a multiple of 9 is a = 1 (17 + 1 = 18). Here a = 1 ≠ b = 6, which is valid. The possible values of a are 5 and 1, and their sum is 5 + 1 = 6.
8Three bells toll at regular intervals of 12, 15, and 20 minutes, respectively. If all three bells toll simultaneously at 09:00, at what time will they next toll together?
A.09:45
B.10:00
C.10:20
D.10:30
Explanation: The time until they next toll simultaneously is the least common multiple (LCM / EKOK) of their individual intervals. Prime factorizations: 12 = 2^2 × 3, 15 = 3 × 5, 20 = 2^2 × 5. LCM(12, 15, 20) = 2^2 × 3 × 5 = 60 minutes. Exactly 60 minutes after 09:00 is 10:00.
9What is the product of the telescoping sequence: (1 - 1/3) × (1 - 1/4) × (1 - 1/5) × ... × (1 - 1/20)?
A.1/20
B.1/10
C.2/15
D.1/5
Explanation: Evaluate each term individually: 1 - 1/3 = 2/3; 1 - 1/4 = 3/4; 1 - 1/5 = 4/5; ... ; 1 - 1/20 = 19/20. Multiplying these gives (2/3) × (3/4) × (4/5) × ... × (19/20). The denominator of each term cancels with the numerator of the succeeding term. All intermediate terms cancel out, leaving only the first numerator (2) and the final denominator (20): 2 / 20 = 1/10.
10If 3^(x + 2) - 3^x = 216, what is the value of x?
A.2
B.3
C.4
D.5
Explanation: Rewrite 3^(x + 2) as 3^x × 3^2 = 9 × 3^x. Substitute this into the equation: 9 × 3^x - 3^x = 216. Factor out 3^x: 3^x(9 - 1) = 8 × 3^x = 216. Divide both sides by 8: 3^x = 216 / 8 = 27. Since 27 = 3^3, we conclude that x = 3.
