1TGAT1 (English Communication) tests speaking through a Question-Response task. Choose the most appropriate response: 'I'm so sorry I broke your mug.' '________'
A.Yes, I would like a mug, please.
B.The mug is on the kitchen table.
C.I am going to buy a new mug tomorrow.
D.Don't worry about it, it was just an old one.
Explanation: An apology ('I'm so sorry') is most naturally met with reassurance that minimises the offence, such as 'Don't worry about it.' TGAT1's Question-Response items reward recognising the social function of an utterance, not just literal meaning.
2TGAT1 short conversation. A: 'Would you mind if I opened the window? It's quite warm in here.' B: '________' Choose the most natural reply.
A.Not at all, go ahead.
B.Yes, I would mind opening it.
C.No, the window is closed now.
D.Please, I do not like fresh air.
Explanation: After 'Would you mind if I...', granting permission is expressed by a negative such as 'Not at all' (meaning 'I do not mind') followed by encouragement like 'go ahead.' This polite-permission pattern is a recurring TGAT1 speaking item.
3TGAT1 text completion. Read the passage and choose the best word for the blank: 'Many students feel nervous before an exam. ________, taking deep breaths and planning your time can help you stay calm.'
A.Because
B.However
C.Therefore
D.Although
Explanation: The first sentence describes a problem (nervousness) and the second offers a contrasting solution, so a contrast connector is needed. 'However' signals that calming strategies counter the nervousness, making the discourse coherent.
4TGAT1 reading comprehension. Passage: 'The city library will close two hours early every Friday in March so that staff can install a new self-checkout system. Normal hours resume in April.' Why is the library closing early on Fridays in March?
A.Because there are too few visitors on Fridays
B.To allow staff to take an extra holiday
C.To set up a new self-checkout system
D.Because the building is being demolished
Explanation: The passage states the early closing is 'so that staff can install a new self-checkout system,' which is the stated reason. Reading comprehension items reward identifying the explicitly given cause.
5TGAT1 long conversation. A: 'Have you finished the group report yet?' B: 'Almost. I just need Mai to send me the references.' A: '________' Choose B's most likely next line that keeps the conversation coherent.
A.A: 'I didn't know we had a report.'
B.A: 'The references are in the library.'
C.A: 'You should write a different report.'
D.A: 'Shall I message her to remind her?'
Explanation: B is waiting on Mai for references, so a cooperative follow-up offering to remind Mai logically advances the exchange. TGAT1 long-conversation items test the ability to track who needs what across several turns.
6TGAT1 grammar in context. Choose the correct word to complete the sentence: 'Neither of the two proposals ________ acceptable to the committee.'
A.is
B.are
C.were
D.have been
Explanation: 'Neither' is grammatically singular, so it takes a singular verb: 'Neither ... is acceptable.' TGAT1 reading items frequently test subject-verb agreement with quantifiers like neither, each and every.
7TGAT1 reading comprehension. Passage: 'Although the new bus app shows arrival times, it does not work without an internet connection, so passengers in rural areas still rely on printed timetables.' What can be inferred about the bus app?
A.It is faster than any printed timetable.
B.It is less useful where internet access is limited.
C.It works perfectly everywhere in the country.
D.It has completely replaced printed timetables.
Explanation: Because the app needs internet and rural passengers still use printed timetables, the logical inference is that the app is less useful where internet is limited. Inference items reward reasoning beyond the literal text without contradicting it.
8TGAT1 vocabulary in context. Choose the word closest in meaning to 'abundant' in: 'After the heavy rains, water was abundant throughout the valley.'
A.scarce
B.polluted
C.plentiful
D.frozen
Explanation: 'Abundant' means existing in large quantities, so 'plentiful' is the closest synonym. TGAT1 reading rewards recognising synonyms from sentence context.
9TGAT1 short conversation. A: 'Could you tell me how to get to the station?' B: 'Sure. Go straight, then turn left at the second traffic light.' What is B doing?
A.Refusing to help
B.Asking for directions
C.Apologising for being late
D.Giving directions
Explanation: B responds to a request for the route with step-by-step instructions ('go straight, then turn left'), which is the function of giving directions. Identifying speaker intent is central to TGAT1 conversation items.
10TGAT1 text completion. 'The factory reduced its waste by recycling materials. ________, it lowered costs and improved its public image.' Choose the best connector.
A.As a result
B.In contrast
C.On the other hand
D.Nevertheless
Explanation: Lower costs and a better image are consequences of recycling, so a result connector fits. 'As a result' correctly links the cause (recycling) to its effects.

About the TCAS - TGAT, TPAT and A-Level Exam

TCAS (Thai University Central Admission System) is the central selection system that Mathayom 6 (Grade 12) students use to enter Thai public universities. Since the 2023 reform, the aptitude tests GAT and PAT were renamed TGAT and TPAT, and the General Subject Tests became A-Level (Applied Knowledge Level), while O-NET became optional in 2022 and is no longer used for admission. The system spans three subtests of TGAT (English Communication 60 items, Critical and Logical Thinking 80 items, Future Workforce Competencies 60 items), five TPAT professional-aptitude subjects, and 16 A-Level subjects ranging from 30 to 80 selected-response items. Each subtest is scored out of 100, results are valid for one year, and universities combine scores into weighted totals to rank applicants across the Portfolio, Quota, Admission and Direct Admission rounds. About 290,000 students sit TCAS each year for limited university places.

TCAS - TGAT, TPAT and A-Level Study Tips from Top Performers

1Download the official blueprint for each subject from mytcas.com and revise according to the exact item counts and topic weights, since the number of questions per topic is published.
2For TGAT1, practise TOEIC-style conversation and cloze tasks; the speaking section is multiple choice (no live speaking) and rewards spotting the function of each utterance.
3For TGAT2, drill number series, ratio and percentage problems, cube-folding and rotation puzzles, and short logic deductions; the maths is interpretation-heavy rather than complex computation.
4For TGAT3, learn the four competency areas and choose the answer that builds sustainable, collaborative value; some items have multiple correct options scored partially.
5For A-Level sciences, master core formulas (kinematics, Ohm's law, the mole, Le Chatelier's principle) and remember some items require filling in a numeric answer, not just choosing a letter.
6Sit timed mock papers to match the real pace (60 minutes for TGAT subtests, 90 minutes for A-Level), and confirm whether you will sit the paper-based Thai version or the computer-based English version.
7Register early on mytcas.com and claim the free-subject subsidy when applying, and plan which of up to 7 subsidised subjects each target faculty actually requires.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are TGAT, TPAT and A-Level in the TCAS system?

TGAT (Thai General Aptitude Test) measures general aptitude in three subtests; TPAT (Thai Professional Aptitude Test) measures professional aptitude in five fields; and A-Level (Applied Knowledge Level) tests applied subject knowledge in 16 subjects. They replaced the former GAT, PAT and General Subject Tests in the 2023 reform.

How many questions and how long is each subtest?

TGAT1 has 60 items, TGAT2 80 items and TGAT3 60 items, each in 60 minutes. A-Level subjects have 30 to 80 items in 90 minutes each. TPAT3, TPAT4 and TPAT5 typically have 70 to 80 items in 180 minutes. Every subtest is scored out of 100 marks.

Is there a passing score for TCAS?

No. There is no fixed pass mark. Each subtest is scored out of 100, and universities combine the scores into weighted totals to rank applicants competitively for limited places across the four TCAS rounds.

How much does it cost to sit TCAS exams?

Each TGAT/TPAT or A-Level subject normally costs 100 baht. For TCAS69 (2026) and TCAS70 (2027), the Ministry of Higher Education and CUPT subsidise up to 7 subjects so they are free; additional subjects are charged at 100 baht each.

How long are TCAS scores valid?

TGAT, TPAT and A-Level scores are valid for one year only. Scores from one academic year cannot be carried over to the next, so students who reapply the following year must retake the exams.

What changed in the 2023 TCAS reform and for TCAS70?

GAT became TGAT, PAT became TPAT, the General Subject Tests became A-Level, and O-NET was made optional in 2022 and dropped for admission. For TCAS70 (academic year 2027), CUPT moved the TGAT/TPAT exams earlier to January 2027 and confirmed up to 7 free subjects.

Are TCAS exams multiple choice?

They are selected-response. Most items are 4-option or 5-option multiple choice, with some complex formats such as choose-multiple answers and fill-in-the-number. TGAT and TPAT3 also offer an English-language computer-based version, while A-Level remains paper-based.
